The historic town of Jim Thorpe has the charms of a European village and is a mountain sports destination (skiing). The mountainous town is known as Little Switzerland. Founded in 1818 and originally known as Mauch Chunk, Jim Thorpe is now named after the athlete and Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe - a member of the Sac and Fox Nation and was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States at the 1912 Olympics. Athlete in football, baseball, lacrosse, and ballroom dancing.
