Second half of the the Battle of Hoth. Wedge Antilles manages to successfully trip an AT-AT via harpoon / tow cable and destroy it. However the tide of the battle begins to shift as the Rebels become overwhelmed by the might of the Empire and its AT-ATs as they shrug off fire. Leia orders a full retreat as General Veers reaches and destroys the shield generators of Echo Base, closing one of the darkest chapters in Rebel Alliance history.

Basically every ground trooper in the Rebellion at the start of this battle was dead or captured at the end of this battle. They knew their job was to buy time for the evacuation. The last transport took off while they were still engaged with the Empire. Star Wars Ep 4-6 focussed on the Jedi but in my view the men and women in the background without Force ability were the true heroes.

I wonder if Lucas drew on the Battle of Dunkirk for this...since a lot of the OT is based on WW II (Especially ANH) Not sure if you know the story of Dunkirk but a lot of French soldiers sacrificed themselves to buy time for evacuating Dunkirk...

@@PrometheusOfVideos I think so. At Calais right before Dunkirk the British and French soldiers held out for 4 days of siege and distracted the bulk of the German forces while the evacuation got underway. Their sacrifice absolutely saved the day and the 300,000+ allied soldiers who were able to get out

The troopers only chance at getting off planet would be the one transport parked away with the X-Wings where guys like Luke hiked to and Wedge piloted his speeder back to. I don't know how long it took Luke to hoof it to but the time window couldn't be good.

This entire movie was a masterpiece in filmmaking and i've loved it since I was a 9 year old kid in 1980. I especially luv all the creatures, vehicles and spaceships. I think the vehicle that stayed with me the most though was those giant mechanical dinosaurs known as Imperial Walkers or AT-AT's for short. I loved them so much that I actually bought a Master Replicas brand AT-AT which was taken from the actual molds they used for the movie and it now lives in my Man Cave. I keep it in a nice see thru plastic case guarded by a single giant AT-AT pilot and have it several feet away from my Snowspeeder & Luke Skywalker action figure (or "doll" as my girlfriend calls it ) just in case they get any ideas about trying to destroy it.

That AT AT blowing that speeder out of the air was really dramatic. It drove home the fact that the Empire ruled the battlefield. I would say that the Empire Strikes Back was the only movie that really stressed the fact that the Imperial Navy was a competent, highly trained military force. Even Star Wars didn’t stress that to the extent that The ESB did.

For sure... I remember the first time I saw ESB and being so shocked at how the good guys just kept getting knocked around. As a kid, I was used to seeing the heroes always winning, but this was my first taste of 'Wow...the heroes lost.' All the heroes were constantly backpedaling as the might of the Empire pursued them relentlessly. From the grunts in the trenches and the brave pilots of Rogue Squadron to the main characters, they were always on the back foot. It was a real shock to me the first time I saw it!

Along with the music, effects, acting and everything else, the reason why this battle is so great and entertaining is the narrative. The Rebels suffer a big setback - lots of casualties, loss of their base and their troops are either killed or scattered. It's such a bleak start to the blockbuster but sets the tone for the film so well. And it really shows what the Empire is like when it means business. While (in my view) Disney essentially copied many aspects of this battle for the ending of The Last Jedi, they couldn't help but spin it slightly as a victory by the end. And there was nowhere near the level of investment in the characters to the point where you felt a sense of defeat and loss.

What’s the lore for why these speeders have harpoons in the first place
@guardian08527
@guardian08527 2 месяца назад
The T-47 speeder was originally built as a cargo hauler of sorts for low altitude (it's a repulsorlift craft not a star fighter) where the harpoon/magnetic cable was used to latch onto containers that didn't have their own self propulsion. I think the Rebels souped them up by adding the laser cannons and instead of having energy shields, they opted for beefy armor plating that could deflect laser blasts and the power that would be used on shields was instead put into the laser cannons and the vehicles speed. Other lore said they were like a flying brick and pretty hard to keep steady with crosswinds and such. Still one of the best looking SW craft for their technical faults.

Eso era Star Wars, esos efectos especiales que te quedabas babeando en el cine, no lo que existe ahora y no digo que no me guste pero no es lo mismo ni de coña

0:59 Didn't they just say the armor was too strong for blasters? I know he hit a weak spot, but why did it have to be tied up for that weak spot to be visible?

They hit the neck, the vital weak spot on an AT AT

There is a theory they have local shielding and when it’s tipped over the generator stops working which makes it vulnerable to the guns.
@X3H3X

@@UnknownPersononGoogle that's a good theory, not gonna lie. I also think that the reason they had to tie up the walker was to make sure they wouldn't get shot down trying to hit the weak spot

In Rogue One we see that Xwings can easily destroy ATVs and we know that the Rebelion has Xwings on Hoth. They are wasting pilotes for nothing making them fly Awings when they could protect the shields with only a few Xwings in the air.

Just to clarify, the Rebel pilots on Hoth were using T-47 Airspeeders, also known as Snowspeeders, not A-wings. These are different ships. In 'Rogue One,' the X-wings were targeting AT-ACTs, which have lighter armor compared to the heavily armored AT-ATs. X-wings are not capable of penetrating AT-AT armor with their laser cannons. Additionally, during the Battle of Hoth, X-wings were tasked with escorting Rebel transports to safety. As seen in Leia's briefing, their primary role was to protect the transports

Absolutely amazing scene!! If you look at 4:09 you can see the stick poke through the ground to tip the AT-AT over. I can't unsee it, and now neither can you!

I’ll never understand why they didn’t use the X wings to engage the AT-AT’s. They worked so well against them in Rogue One

They were needed to cover the shuttles. Airspeeders can't break atmosphere, so those T-47s were probably gonna be left behind either way. Might as well use them to buy time.

@@evanallen172 I've also read that the weather was wrecking havoc on the X-Wings flight systems, but that seems to be a mixed answer since some media depicts X-wings during the Battle of Hoth not having any issues.

0:58 why they can destroy when it fall? They get weaker or what?

There's a weak spot in the area between the head and the rest of the body, according to EU lore..

the Corrugated flexible material that covers the neck isn't as durable against plasma cannons as the rest of the cockpit and hull armour. Get a hit there, chain reaction to blow up the walker, it's very death-star-ish like that

Great scene and film. I got to see it in the cinema and we'd only seen 'Star Wars' so it was all still very new as a franchise. Interesting how the Commander's Imperial Walker is the only one not destroyed.
