My 97 Toyota 4 runner had an issue with the check engine light coming on. I checked it out and it was code P0441 - Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow. I looked it up and found it could be caused by a few different things, but one of them mentioned possibly your gas cap is not on tight enough, or is bad and not working correctly. Fails to open or close properly. I checked mine out and it was pretty corroded on the inside. Mine was not a factory OEM model, but had been replaced before. So I ordered a new one off of Amazon.
This is the 97 4runner gas cap I ordered from Amazon:
The model number I purchased is #77310-35080
I did find online that after 3/98 it looks like they switched to part number 77310-48020. Looking at the pictures this new model has some added print on the gas cap. It mentions to tighten until clicks or malfunction indicator may come on. Not sure if the rest of the gas cap is the same, or if that was the only change.
Here is a link to an OBD II code reader kinda like the one I had in the video :
I did not see my model online, maybe I got it at harbor freight or something. But mine was in the same price range as the link above I think, ~20 bucks.
Hope someone finds the video helpful.

I was told basically the original oem cap is the only replacement that will work permanently where the aftermarket don’t have the perfect fit and longevity is min. Kind of a proprietary design and quality

Thanks for the comment. That's interesting as I would have thought they would all be pretty much the same, Glad I bought an original OEM Toyota. Still no error codes since I replaced it about 2.5 years ago.

You said 'turn on the ignition' but just to help the newbies...you turn the key to 'on' but do not engage the starter when you check the code.

Did your gas go out quickly when having this problem

I did not notice any change in gas mileage or anything after swapping it out. So I don't think it did go out. I still have not seen that code since swapping it out about 2.5 years ago.

I had nothing but Toyotas the past 10 years and yes they last forever but once they get to 190 thousands miles they will have evap codes issues so you have to be ready to replace the charcoal canister leak detection pump and most of the vacuum hoses if you park it outside and is exposed to extreme weather, the hot and cold weather and rain can really do a lot of damage to the rubber hoses and the plastic connectors it really sucks specially if you want to keep them forever.

I had a 0441 on my 2008 hyndaui elantra. Replaced the purge. Now a few days later i have a 0455. Gas cap seems fine. Any ideas?

Might be the tires

@@elroyer24 . Oh crap I need new tires and I've been procrastinating for the longest, I hope you're not joking but for my safety I'm going to get some new tires immediately, my tires are just about done there's practically no thread left in them I do have a p0441 and now also a p0455 and I already replaced the gas cap with an oem cap from Toyota, right now both codes are just pending so still not sure if is fixed but minus well get new tires and see what happens next.

Nice, I hope it stays code free for you. I haven't replaced a purge valve yet, and was lucky the cap fixed it for me. Still no codes since I posted this and that was quite a while ago.
