This video shows the installation of a switch that turns the traction control off and on for a 2003-2009 4th gen 4Runner. I am using this to snow drift and for winter autocross! I bought the switch and additional wire at AutoZone.
THE BEAST 😂✊ha, kick ass, I love this mod. I've been thinking of doing it to my 2007 V6 and this is probably the best video and most thorough demo of how to I've found so far. Thanks for sharing and whenever I get around to doing it this is my go to for the install!
Greetings from Waukesha! Really enjoying your videos. Well shot, concisely narrated and you keep it interesting. Currently on the hunt for my 4th Gen V8 Limited unicorn now, and your videos will surely aid me in the future when I start upgrading.
Hi Bobby! The MKE hub! Thank you for the compliments. 4th gen V8s are elusive but awesome. Maybe you can find a clean one from down south. Good luck with your build; hopefully see you around town
I also have a 2008 4runner, and I was fortunate to have a factory traction control switch on my truck that I can turn off traction control. Great video for people who don't have that option like I do.
Use a momentary switch/button - it does the same thing, and ABS, etc. remains disabled until the engine is restarted but you won't forget to turn the switch on. Usually you need to disable ABS for a particular short trip like up an icy hill but not constantly.
If anyone is ever in a pinch and hasn't done the switch yet. You can always disconnect one of the front wheel speed sensors. The connector is by the front shock under the hood. Driver side is by the fuse box easy to reach.
Does the VCS and Trac Off lights go on when you shift to drive when the switch is not activated? Mine is doing that. When you do activate the switch it still does those and also turns on the abs light
@@EnigmaEngineering cool that I found your channel. I got a 2005 that I’m planing on doing a “level” with the bilsteins in January. Currently sitting in my 4 runner that’s powering my sump pump from it’s outlet as the power went out again. 4runner saving me from a flooded basement!
If I leave the kill switch on and turn the car off and back on again will it automatically turn off or do I need to cycle and turn the kill switch off before turning the car off then back on when I turn the car on?
Question! I have 2008 sport model awd, and instead of the three wires like yours has, mine has only two wires, one is green and the other one is white with black stripe. Which one do I cut into? I’m assuming it’s the green one, but I’m only guessing at this point.
I have a question, my 4runner does not turn off those 3 lights, change speed sensors and the problem still continues. my question is that by doing that I eliminate the lights mine is a limited 6v model help
Looking forward to seeing the Bilstein install, nice video, if you were just going to be drifting in the snow could you have just put the center locker on and that would disable vsc?
Hi Drew, thanks, great comment. Working on the 5100 video this weekend! Yes, locking the center diff turns the VSC off. I tried that last year autocrossing - it felt a little weird having both wheels spinning the same rate, not sure yet if it helped or hurt - but the toggle switch will make it easier to compare the two
Hi Kyle - I think this can be different for later year models. You might have to try a different color wire. I heard it is a white wire for later generations that do not have the red wire. Thanks for your comment!
Hi there, no need for a ground with tapping into the ABS wiring? Seeing some other process going into the ECU and they do ground, wondering if that's caused any issue for you?
I did this years ago. I've only disabled the VSC probably 5 times. After I did this mod my brake booster motor went it....Related? IDK, but $4000 repair if you can't do it yourself...I'm hoping it was just coincidence. I have heard where certain models have had trouble with the brake booster motors. The brake booster motor cost me $400 new and it was very difficult to replace at least for me.
I tried this but the noise didnt go away . Do you know about this problem 03 Forerunner, it sounds like the front hubs are locked or bad axel bearings , like it stuck in a lower gear.
Just did this on my 2007 4Runner 2wd and didn’t work for me. The only difference that I should point out is that I use a 18 gauge regular speaker wire to connect the switch and the master ABS module connector. I make sure that the cable that interrump the circuit was connected to the ground on the switch. Maybe this doesn’t work for 2wd or I need something else. Would appreciate some help.
Hey man thank you for this tutorial. Big help! I hope to do this on my 2007 V8 soon. Question, Can I flick the VSC switch off while driving, (for when I hit ice on hills), or do I have to be in idling in park to disable it first?
Hi Troy! no problem. Do it!! You can flick the VSC switch and turn it off while driving. But, in order to get the VSC back on, you have to be stopped and restart the vehicle
coming from a GX470 platform here. essentially the same set up except the wire color is different. how can I identify which one I need to tap into? (BTW awesome simple and straightforward video)
Hi Daniel! A few comments further down talk about newer 4Runners that have different wire colors. They might be able to help you out. Thank you so much!
Thank you David! I do not think I have A-TRAC on mine - but I would assume this would disable it. Maybe mine is an older version of A-TRAC. I usually have the VSC turned ON. I only disable it when I want to make the car drift or I am autocrossing it
@@EnigmaEngineering 2001-2022 4Runner had 1st gen A-TRAC and you have A-TRAC II, which is always on at 4LO, before 2500rpm. 4th gen 2009 4Runner TE was first 4Runner which has always-off, and you have ON (engage) button, like FJ and Like 5th Gens do.
So what purpose is there really for doing this? Where can it help? Just interested as I personally don’t care to drift but looking for kids to help with offroading or safety or maximizing the use of the truck
The default traction control prevents acceleration, so if you are sliding, the car just actuates the brakes, essentially just slowing the car down. But, if you are trying to get the car to pitch sideways and drift/powerslide, you need to use throttle to make the car rotate or prevent it from rotating. This switch turns off the traction control, allowing the driver much more control of the vehicle in low traction situations. Even in autocrossing/racing, unless you have a modern car with advanced traction control, the VSC on older cars like the 4Runner prevents optimum speeds because it activates any time a tire is slipping, which is basically all of the time while on a track
So my '06 4Runner V8 2wd drive, the VSC light doesn't want to shut off and it doesn't have a switch. Will I be able to keep that light off by installing this switch, it's not four-wheel drive. Seems like many have this problem and your video makes it sound too easy. Hope it is tho.
It sounds like you VSC system is disabled due to some problem probably. You should get your OBD port scanned by a shop and see if they can get you some answers!
Hey a bit late but some obd scanners can cause the vsc lights to come on and disable the vsc. This is due to the multi protocols being sent to the car from the scanner before it syncs to the proper protocol for 2 way communication and erases the “zero” function of the vsc so it’s shuts off. Dealer can re set the zero function ( most likely for a charge ) and there are some videos of other ways to do it.
www.ch4x4.com/product/ch4x4-toyota-push-switch-vsc-symbol/ this is the one i used, and have it mounted in the blank switch space behind the shifter and between the front seats. i call it "the fun switch"
@@EnigmaEngineering the blank slot enxhists yes..... However the switch itself does nit exhist from the factory. U need to wire the 'correct' vsc switch mod first.
there is another way of doing this so you dont have to restart the engine everytime. its a little bit more in depth and requires you to splice a wire at the abs ecu module under the glovebox.
Way easier and cleaner to just T into the red/blue wire on the 4wd ecu under the glovebox and ground it with a switch, then you don't need to run wires to you engine bay or cut any wires.
Yes, I think this would work. I don't think you would damage anything. I usually am driving long distances to large open spaces in blizzards, so sometimes I want the VSC on/off but I don't want to get outside the vehicle. I believe the pressure switch is related to the ABS system, which the VSC uses to control wheel spin. So disconnecting the pressure switch kicks off ABS which in turn disables the VSC system
You should of said which wire goes to which on the back of the switch. You wasn't informative on that part! Had to watch another video on RU-vid and dude described which wire goes on the switch connectors at the back of the switch.
what video did you watch that further explained which wire it is? Or do you happen to know which wire it is? it seems to be the lowermost wire on the plug right?
