Want to buy a TRAC OFF switch?
Email: sean@timmythetoolman.com
The '01-02 4Runners came with a TRAC and VSC option that reduces power from the engine to the wheels. Triggering this TRAC OFF button disables your vehicles TRAC (traction control) and/or VSC (vehicle stability control) systems.
When your Toyota gets stuck in snow or mud, you may need to disable TRAC or VSC. These two systems may reduce power transferred from the engine to the wheels, which is not ideal when you’re stuck. Disabling the systems can make it easier to rock your vehicle and free it from the snow or mud. To turn it off, all you need to do is press and hold the TRAC OFF button for approximately 3 seconds. You will know you were successful when the TRAC OFF/VSC indicator pops up on your dashboard. With this style OEM TRAC OFF momentary switch, you will need to turn off your vehicle to enable the TRAC OFF/VSC system again.

This is awesome thank you so much. I have the relay and just waiting on a switch to show up to do this mod. I was a Audi tech and a Audi driver up until recently after my Audi got totaled in a accident. I recently purchased a 3rd gen 4runner knowing about the longevity and finding that things are a lot easier to work on....except for the rust, but can't win everything. Either way in a recent snow storm I was trying to turn on a highway and a slight slip engaged my VSC. It's a 2001 and had the 4x4 engaged but not the center diff lock considering I was still on the roads and had to turn alot, even though engaging the center diff lock does disengage the VSC. I was without any response to the accelerator and thought I was going to get T-boned any second. Luckily at the last second I was able to get it to disengage and accelerate onto the highway. After that i realized that this traction control could put me in danger. So again thank you so much for this video with the diagrams and such, it will give me some added assurance of not getting into a pickle.
@TimmyTheToolman

Yeah this traction control/VSC system sometimes can have a mind of its own. For those reading this comment, essentially what happens is when this system is engaged (due to traction or off camber situations when making a sharp turn) the system will cut power to your acceleration, effectively putting your vehicle into a limp mode making it dangerous if you’re trying to get out of a sticky situation quickly like in your case pulling out, onto a roadway where cars are moving quickly. We have a couple switches in hand if you wanted to buy one from us, otherwise, we are stoked you got a 4runner. We hope we have more videos that will help your future mods! - Sean

@@TimmyTheToolman I drive slow, so I haven't had any issues with VSC kicking in unexpectedly. I believe Toyota's VSC in general saves lives. It makes the car more idiot-proof. Eliminates overcorrection during skids. You can see dashcam videos of it in action. Toyota also has a brief video explaining how it works. It's good to keep on except when off road.

Side story about that yellow paint - Somebody stole it and was stupid enough to paint it with Wall latex paint, which I still trying to get rid of. When I was bidding on a car I have no idea is the engine runs or how many miles on it. It didn’t have keys and all the locking cylinders were broken... @TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 года назад
a relay is generally there to prevent harm to the switch. I don't think it will damage anything since the switch just extends the wire and allows the wire to make connection or disconnect the connection.

Interesting video. The 2001 & 2002 came with a vehicle skid control off switch located by the dimmer switch which only worked when you activated the centre differential lock switch. I usually only used that switch in the winter time when there was less traction under my tires with the snow. At times it was necessary to have the traction control off during this time of the year as when you tried to cross an intersection and if you spinned your tires slightly it activated the skid control system which momentarily cuts off your throttle to move forward. This can be a very dangerous situation when you have to get across before you meet up with another vehicle. This was the only the time of the year when I could use this switch as you know you can not have the centre differential lock switch on when you are on dry pavement. I wonder if you could some how tap into that system switch when you want to drive it in regular 4wd mode?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 года назад
not sure if you can tap into the switch, but i'm sure you could do the same thing we do in this video. it sounds like your truck came from the factory with the trac off switch installed, so with that said, not sure if that changes anything. the way we install the switch in this video allows you to deactivate the trac off system in 2wd, 4wd high, 4wd low and with or without the center diff lock engaged.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
You must have a 2nd model correct? That’s how the system is suppose to function. This mod we showcase in this video is not how the factory system is wired and therefore functions a tad bit different. The idea behind this button, is to disable the traction control in order for you to have more control over your vehicle in slippery conditions such that you’re not loosing power to your wheels if you had to make a quick move across an intersection or some circumstance where you just have to move fast out of a turn.

Would just cutting the red/black wire without connecting it to the switch be effective other than not being able to turn it on when wanted? Anything I could be overlooking? Just curious as to what it means when my 02 puts those lights on the dash when I go into 4 wheel drive, they come on and off if I engage or disengage 4 by 4. My sun visor owners card says the trac system gets disabled or turned off when you engage 4 wheel, so I’m curious as to what’s the point of this mod ? I have a understanding that it will limit power when in 4 wheel ? Even though from factory it’s supposed to disengage while I’m in 4 wheel, does it not work correctly ? Basically when I go i engage my lights pop on the dash like this mod is supposed to do so I’m curious does the system not truly turn off unless you do this mod, even tho my lights pop up already when In 4…..
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
Your system is working properly like it should. When you engage 4x4 it should turn off like you’re expecting. The point of this mod is to disable it WITHOUT needing to engage 4x4. When you are just driving around town normally in 2wd, and this system engages, it cuts power to your truck (technically it applies the brakes) and thus, you might be in a sticky situation if you’re trying to het across an intersection quickly or some of quick movement. If that attempt is by the over-activeness of this system, it could cause you to not get out of harms way quick enough making it dangerous… that and also hooning with your friends in a dirt parking lot doing donuts might also be hard to accomplish if this system keeps engaging on you.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
In theory, yes ABS will remain. The wire you cut to do this mod dose not disable the ABS, so even though a TRAC OFF momentary switch is used in this illustration to accommodate an OEM look and feel, a rocker switch shouldn't change what this mod can affect.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
2wd models included this feature from the factory on 2001-2002 4Runners. For you, you already have this “mod” so you wouldn’t be installing anything. Understanding when to use the button is what you need I believe. Have you ever tried to pull in traffic from a stop and the truck beeped at you and the VSC light flickered/illuminated? That’s the traction control kicking in which cuts power to your wheels. So if you were in a situation where you had to make a quick decision and gun in but your truck was cutting power, it could be a dangerous situation. So by disabling your traction control, you will maintain the power you need to get going fast so the oncoming car doesn’t rear end you. - Sean

@@TimmyTheToolman yeah. I’ve had this exact issue during the winter storm I’m Texas. Question...I did the Andy mod 1.0 last year even though I was aware there was a 2.0 when I went to look for the wire to cut under dash I wasn't certain which one it was so I opted for the 1.0 which involves tapping into the brake booster ground. It does everything this does but it also kills the abs. My question is this: I have an 01 which we all know has vsc sensitivity issues especially after lifting it. Is there a way to kill the dash beep? It beeps whenever the computer thinks I'm close to tipping, when in reality I'm well planted. It mostly kicks on when cornering too fast. I tried toggling the andymod switch which disables all those systems, but the dash beep still continues. This is the most frustrating part of my whole build. I've done the zero point calibration a couple times and it helps but doesn't kill the dash beep permanently. Any ideas? Have you heard of this problem before? I'm wondering if I did the andymod 2.0 it might kill the beep because I'm tapping into the actual wiring harness, but I'm not sure. Thanks!

You don’t need to remove your lift. There are hundreds of 01/02 4Runners out there with lifts including us! You probably just need to do a zero point calibration. The YAW rate sensor is probably thrown off now that your truck has changed it’s levelness sort of speak. Once you recalibrate you should be fine. In addition to that, you could also just install this TRAC OFF switch and disable the system on the fly whenever you want to avoid your truck beeping at you. - Sean

That should work in theory if you connected the correct wires to the correct pins. Not all relays have prongs in the same location so you have to read the number + see the diagram printed on it to understand how that relay switches. 4 or 5 pronged relays should work as long as you are connecting everything correctly.

I would Retrace your steps. Make sure your relay is hooked up correctly and that you cut the correct wire. The truck needs to be turned off in order to reset this mod. The switch is a momentary switch so you can’t press it on and off. Once you press it, that will disable the VSC/TRAC OFF. Restarting the vehicle will reset the system

I swear I did, I’ll give it another go tomorrow. What do we do with 87 on the relay? We splice 30 and 87 a into the red wire with the black trace. I’m sure I got that right. I know I cut into the right wire since the vsc and trac stay off. But I’m having trouble in reconnecting the wire in the harness. I wonder if my connection to 30 or 87a are bad. It’s so tight under the dash. I’ll try to make a better connection tomorrow. Do you have any other suggestions?

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
Do You have this switch installed or no? If you don’t have this installed, and your lights are ON, this won’t help you turn them off.. if they are on currently, something else is going on and there is something wrong with the system. Not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask, but I just upgraded my whole front end, added OME 990/881 and Billy 5100s. When bleeding my brakes I got air in the master cylinder and got that all fixed, but now when I try to drive it it will barely accelerate (if at all) and my Trac control light occasionally flashes. Also, there's a clicking sounds coming from the end (thought it was something rubbing from the slight lift but doesn't seem to be so). My 4wheel drive light flashes like it is wanting to engage though the button hasn't been pushed. Would this mod potentially rectify this issue or do I need to try another approach?

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Год назад
How did you bleed the master cylinder? Your ABS module also probably has air in it. The fact that your vehicle barely accelerates doesn't make sense to me. Is the engine revving but not moving because it feels like something is holding it back, like stuck brakes? Or, does it sound like there's an issue with the engine? Even if you had air in the brake system, it shouldn't cause the symptoms you're experiencing. I've never heard of this.
@jeffluker1895
@jeffluker1895 Год назад
@@TimmyTheToolman I used the method where you hook a clear tube to all the calipers and terminate it in the MC and pump the brakes w the ignition on. It's supposed to remove the air from both MC and calipers. Brakes work great now and the engine purrs after all that I did to it. Doesn't feel like the brakes are holding it back, it's just when I floor it it simply doesn't want to move (engine doesn't seem to rev up either when I do this). So maybe focus on the ABS module? For the life of me I don't know what to search for.

Did I mention that the 4WD drive light flashes like it's trying to engage though I haven't pushed the button? And the trac light (pic of the truck w/ skid marks) comes on occasionally.
