The Nest branded Gen 3 looks to be far superior (albeit more expensive) than the new "nest" thermostat. I hope google doesn't drop support of the original nest thermostats.
Erin, as usual, thanks for the great review. I was super excited when I saw "4th gen nest" and very quickly, was disappointed. I'm still using the first gen (actually the very first batch of Nest thermostat). I have been meaning to upgrade but didn't really see many changes or at least from a UI perspective. I understand there are new features and all, but not enough to justify the cost and swap out something that is still in working order.
Hi Erin, Thank you for this video. I just wanted to draw your attention to something that may help those folks without a 'C' wire in their HVAC systems. It is a new accessory from Google called the 'Google Power Connector' and is wired into the Furnace control board where it provides increased power to the Nest and should extend the life of the battery. I have a Nest E Thermostat which was installed about 3 years ago. My system only had three wires (Heat, Cool and Power). I recently discovered that the Nest E was disconnecting from WiFi and giving low battery warnings. I did consider running new cable but it looks like a nightmare in my house as it's completely finished. Instead I purchased the new 'Google Power Connector' from the Google Store, (~$35 delivered). After installation of the Power Connector, the Current to my Nest E increased from 20mA to 40mA. Unfortunately my Nest E battery is too far gone now and will not hold charge (which I confirmed with Google Support - repair is not available through Google) so unless I can find a replacement battery, I will need a new Thermostat. Bottom line is that I think the Power Connector might be a good option over pulling cable.
Ouch! Changing those wiring must be killing your budget at 300 bucks! Not very nice. At $179 sound like you get what you are pay for. Thanks for sharing Erin! Have an awesome day my friend! 👍🏻
The expensive rewiring was not necessary. Just a change in the wiring connections in the furnace itself was all that was needed. I have a Nest and experienced the same problems that was listed. The problem is that without the C wire, power was only provided to the thermostat when the fan was on. A search on how to do this will show what's needed. Also, I do have central air air conditioning as well and still didn't need the expensive rewiring.
Looks like this new nest thermostat still doesn't compete with the ecobee. They still need a feature to hold for a few hours at a temp that isn't on the schedule. I always found that I'd fight my schedule or forget to set the thermostat back to the scheduled temp for the night time. The Ecobee lets me adjust my heat up for a few hours if I stay up late and then returns to the schedule. Or if I am coming home after a day away the schedule won't override my manual adjustment for a few hours.
It seems that there is not an option to add the 4th generation (with the mirrored from) for Nest website access. The Nest E and learning thermostats are listed as products to add to your home but not this one. I'm using a safari browser. Does anyone know a workaround or fix?
$300?!? Wow. I would of tried to do it myself first. just buy those same wires. tape it to the old wires. and then pull them down. its pretty simply to match up the wires and screw them into the same screws on the circuit board of the hvac system. only problem would be if it gets stuck in the wall somewhere. but then at least the guy is going to work for his money lol.
I kinda wish they made the whole circle in screen instead of rectangle shape looking display Honestly without the c wire, it kind of defeats the purpose of making it 100% automation.
@@ErinLawrenceTV I was just wondering if you could connect it to either Dan Foss or Netstat radiator thermostats or any similar products. At the moment I don't have any intelligent thermostats or furnace. I hope it makes sense ☺️
Thanks for the video. Trim kit looks like a dust/spider trap and I’m wary of the touch interface. Sigh. Looks like I will have to wait longer for a decent thermostat. Thanks again.
Calling this thermostat '4rd generation' sounds misleading. Everybody can see that this thermo is clearly a step back from Nest's 3rd gen. thermo. Without c wire functionality is very poor. And installig the c wire is totally killing the price advantage.
This is complete garbage compared to the previous Gen! I am renting a place with the 4th Gen and the UI/UX is terrible! The dial doesn’t even turn! You know Tony wouldn’t have approved this.
