Thanks for the informative video, I just bought one of these. One correction to your otherwise factual information: The "target temp" and "current temp" settings are not exactly the same. If you run your hand in front of the thermostat after it sleeps, you will get exactly the same display with either setting. But if you set "current temp" and then let it go to sleep, and then approach from a FARTHER distance, as it wakes up the display does actually show you the CURRENT temp in the center of the display. Walk a bit closer, and CURRENT temp will then move to the outer circle, and the inner display will switch to TARGET temp.
Tim, thanks for the comment and clarification. You are correct. The differences are subtle, but there is a difference between the two as you describe. In 'current temp' mode the Nest does awake to the current temp and when you get close to it, it pushes current mode to the back ring and displays target temp in the center. In 'target mode' it displays the target temp in the center no matter what distance you stand in front of the Nest. Thanks again for the comment Tim!
Perhaps this wasn't working back in 2019, but in Gen 3 in 2020 the CURRENT TEMP and TARGET TEMP are different. I installed one in Oct 2020 and the CURRENT TEMP shows the current temperature in a very large font. The TARGET TEMP shows as he demoed. Great product which I'm glad I purchased. Works flawlessly with my Heat Pump.
This is a fatal flaw in the design. Seeing the current temperature displayed at all times is a mandatory requirement. Why they decided not to make it always on is a deal breaker.
Nice video. This is great information. I don't understand why videos like this get some thumbs down. People are idiots. Thanks for putting out this information.
The INDOOR TEMP shows up very large and clear if you set it in Farsight. The trick is don't get to close or it will change back over to the DEFAULT Target Temp display in the middle.
current temp will display in farsight for me but will change to detailed screen when I move right up to it displaying target temp in middle and current temp on perimeter.
Why can’t a similar technology be applied to the Nest E as well as the new 2020 Google Nest thermostat?I have the latter thermostat and it wakes up from about 15-20 feet away. It seems as if a similar options to Farsight could be provided. Perhaps not all options as the screen resolution is lower. I think Nest is the only thermostat that defaults to displaying the set temperature instead of room temperature. I already know what temperature I set the thermostat for, but my first interest is what is the actual room temperature. Thanks.
Will it control furnace blower ON/OFF? My humidifier is mist kind and requires heat and blower working together with humidifier. My humidifier also requires furnace blower to work a couple minutes after humidifier switches off automatically to distribute all the moisture collected in the duct. If blower stops the same time with mist humidifier moisture still will sit inside plenum and makes it rust. Will this Humidifier Control have this setting so furnace blower work few minutes after humidifier switched off??
SUPER HELPFUL! Thank you so much! My husband has a fit because the Nest seems to be off about 4-5 degrees from our OLD thermostats (ambient temperature). He just doesn't want to accept they "READ" differently but this is VERY cool! Thank you!
I'm not aware of an 'Always On' setting for the Nest. Use the Farsight technology, the Nest displays what setting you want when you approach or walk by the Nest. I'm sure screen burnout is a factor as to why it's not possible to have it always on.
Can you turn it off or have the light dim, it can be annoying when dogs move in the room or wife gets up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
That is not correct. The current temp will show if it is selected in Farsight but only from further that 3 feet away. As you get closer to the Nest the display will change and show target temp screen. Sorry just realized Kevin already mentioned this.
Yes, you got it right. If you are further away (say 6ft or so) the Nest will display either Current or Target temp, whatever you have chosen. If you get closer in the 3 ft range, the display changes again to reflect both current & target temps - again depending on what you have selected. Thanks for the comment here.
You mention that you have a nest thermostat in your bedroom. Is it just a slave unit wirelessly connected to the main unit that isactually connected to your heating/cooling system?
The target temp and current temp farsight setting are different but the unit needs to be running. When it's running and farsight is activated (and you when you walk by the sensor) the current temp shows up on the full screen with either a blue or orange background to indicate if it's cooling or heating (then after a few seconds I goes back to the same screen as if you only had it in target temp option). Otherwise it looks like the same as seen in your video. *the edits I added are in the (....) brackets
Mine shows current temp and only current temp 6 feet away. When i move closer it changes to set temp, thinking im going to change it. So wake it up further away.
Yea my Honeywell shows all of this at the same time plus more and I can see the temp from either end of the hallway. I still have my Nest 3rd Gen sitting in the package.
Tried one, refused to connect to wifi, firestick, chrombook, phone, laptop have no problem. Hours with very polite customer support yeilded no results. Replaced with simple non wifi programable for 1/4 the price of cheapest model in less than 10 minutes. This is a solution in search of a problem with many down sides, certanly not worth my time.
Odd, did it ever come back yet? If not, you can reset your Nest Thermostat as a last resort. Try going into the Farsight settings and see if the other options work.
@@SmartHomeMojo I ended up having issues with my network router...bad firmware update.... Don't understand why that would have been the issue...but once that was resolved my weather started showing again
Are you working with a brand new Nest Thermostat or an existing one? If existing, maybe try resetting the device. What are you trying to 'set' on the device, scheduling temps?
Emerson ST55 has this feature and it is $100. The Nest and other thermostats are only good if you have a super high-end HVAC system. The majority of the homes in North America have far from perfect air circulation problems that render all these smart devices mostly useless. Geofencing is among those useful features, and guess what TS55 has that.
