I've got a 90 series Prado and absolutely love it. 1998, 3.4L V6 Petty, auto, GXL. Picked it up for 6k about 4 months ago with 280k on the clock. After numerous Turbo Diesels I went with V6 4.0L PETROL HiLux on my mechanics advice. He has one with nearly 500,000 Klms no issues. I love my Petrol twin cab. So cheap to run because no expensive diesel sensors etc causing problems. Filters, Oil and fluid changes and that’s it! Bonus is so smooth and quiet. We run the 4.0 as a generator when camping to top up off grid batteries. No diesel stink in the camp either. I love it. Sensibly driven I get 11 to 12 L/100 no worries. 18 towing 2.5 ton. On 91 or 95 whatever’s cheapest.

I replaced a Fuel Pump on my NP Pajero Petrol for under $1000. I think you said $4000. I like your commentary and its about time someone recognized the NP Pajero for its value. I have owned mine for 8 years now and had some little issues from time to time but nothing major. As you said a good set of tires, reliable suspension and a little housekeeping make this a great car for 4x4 and touring. The gen 2 pajeros are a really good budget buy. In terms of mods you can put stock gq coils in the rear and 4Runner shocks in the rear too give it a 3 inch lift. As long as it isn’t a 3l v6 one this means you can fit 33’s with some decent flex in the rear with the sway bar disconnected. Only issue is you lose flex in the front end.

Bought my 2001 90 series Prado V6 7 years ago for $12k. Only had 155k kms so it was a steal, as I still have just over 260k kms on the clock now! I did consider the diesel version, however when I counted the extra money for purchase and maintenance costs, the rough calculations showed I'll have to drive at least 80k-90k kms to get the money back. The td5 has plenty of character like driving a truck. Agree get a good one as they arent fun engines to work on. Also they use alot of technology not found in other 4wds such as unit injectors as well as funky problems caused by things such as oil in wiring harness so you need to find mechanics that know what they are doing on this particular car.

As was mentioned, what you save buying a lower priced unleaded vehicle can be $ thousands, so no bank loans, no interest etc. Why spend $60k to $100k on a diesel to save a few fuel cents and then laugh at a V8 unleaded owner of an older model who owes $0 to a bank has used savings to fit it out with accessories etc (and a long range tank).

I love my 1fz 80. It’s my first car that got as an apprentice 10 years ago for $6500. $15000 cheaper then the diesel at the time. It averages around 18-19/100 and I’m going through the process of turboing the old girl! It’s an absolute beast! And has never let me down

I love mine too. The 1FZ often gets overlooked for the diesel but I reckon the petty is underrated. A bit thirsty but the price difference buys a lot of fuel

Love your vids Jocko. Two of my favorite trucks on your list. The RC 4jj1 collie; had one for 4 years and 100k Kms. Fantastic truck that was very capable and reliable. And the Disco! Spent 1000s of hours in many different iterations of land rovers and they are a fantastic vehicle! All the haters are insecure fanboys who deep down know that that nothing comes close to the land rover for out of the box off road ability! Nor have they ever owned one!

In the US, my opinion for one of the most underrated, best value 4x4s is the 1st gen Toyota Sequoias. They’re gaining popularity in aftermarket support, and most have spent their life never seeing dirt before as they were a common soccer mom vehicle. I picked up an ‘05 Sequoia for $2,000, and have since turned it into an off-road monster for under $10,000 for the total project. Not bad!

You guys are making a great point here!.. I bought a 1998 Prado in pretty mint condition clocked at about 268000kms, 3.4L petrol for $5.5K cash after a little bit of bargaining. It was a couple of years ago but surely grabbed the best deal out there!! The cherry on the cake is that mods like Ironman bull bar, winch, UHF, Bridgestone AT tires, roof rack and awning also came in the package! I only had to change the radiator that was pretty roasted, did a full service and added a set of 2 inch Tough Dog suspensions and I was ready for any sort of adventures.. It means that I could use the spare cash for the rest.. The V6 always ran like a champion and the car's now fully kitted with lithium battery system and all the comfort needed for touring like a king.

Bought a 98 Prado about 2 weeks ago off a couple that had well used it but also looked after it and were letting it go as they had bought a newer model. The engine had to be refurbished but overall it's in as good condition as a 23 year old car can be. It has a fair few bumps and scratches but it's perfect for our needs to travel across Australia. We bought it for 7 grand.

Had a 92 4runner with a v6 back in the day. After the usual head gasket failure, replaced the stock exhaust system with a 2.5 lukey systek and added extractors. A k&n air filter and snorkel and it dropped the economy way down. I was averaging 12L/100 on the hwy empty-14-16 loaded with 4” lift and 33’s. With a 5 speed. Was an animal. Only let down was the weak ifs steering components so would have massively benefited from a sas.

Fuel efficiency anywhere between 14-20L/100km which is high, but love the power and torque you get from the stock petty engine, not to mention consistency across all rev ranges. Reliability of these motors with regular oil changes and care for the cooling system is second to none. Timing chain vs belt is another huge bonus.

This was one of your best vids of late - really well thought out as a lot of people can't afford the prices of new vehicles these days, the older models seem less complex & parts can be found fairly easily. I also think the character of a lot of newer 4by's has been lost - as corny as that sounds. We've had a 120 series since new after selling our 90 series way back in 2009, something we regret a bit.
