This video shows you how to remove and reinstall an old school internal 4x4 lock out hub. These were once common place on nearly every 4x4 truck or suv built but started to disappear from production in the 80s, and was phased out by the late 90's. An updated but different style continues to be used in some select pickups today.

I'm an old factory trained ( in Detroit) for GM and Mopar line mechanic. ( Drive train specialist) Really old-- nearly 80 haha. I'm totally versed in old school. I have a 93 highLuxl V 6 with axle problems. I came to your review to make sure there weren't any surprises I should be forwarned of. I used to be in racing and a VoTech Auto Mechanic teacher so I can say---- this was an instructor quality explanation. You have the skills to teach. Thanks for leaving no unaddressed details including an excellent description of the mechanical function of the Lock out mechanism. Dandahermit.

@@macsgarage does this hub lock makes both tires spin at the same revolution. So if one tire loses traction diff won't send all the torque to that tire. so it does what diff lock does.

@ about 10:12 you show how to keep the axel and drive shaft in the position that's far enough out to get the snap ring back on the spindel.Thank you for your considerate observations! I might add that you can also observe weather or not locking hub is working by putting it in the "LOCKED" position and then rotating the wheel (rotor).The axel will rotate if hub is working. Axel will not be moving while rotating the wheel when hub is in the "FREE" position.

you should do the hammering before you loosen the allen screws. Breaks the friction a little better, i think. best, bless,
@galehess6676
@galehess6676 Год назад
Tip: Don't fill hub with grease, it won't work. The 3 or 6 outside screws, Don't cut them, spray with liquid wrench and hit with hammer and then heat each screw 20s and out they come very easily, compared to being seized up to start like they would snap the hex bit or screwdriver bit, .. after 8 years of snow plowing in salt for 4 months a year... and never having been serviced mine seemed like they would not come out but with heat, came right out without breaking anything snapping off etc. I should have removed and cleaned up every 3-6 years... or even just when the R hub got harder to operate... forgot how easy this is after doing it in 2014 and mine corroded (could have polished it out with a dremel and kept running these another 10 years) and snapped a tab. My 25 year old oem ford f250 plastic turning /engagement grab point came out in my hand after it progressively got harder to turn causing a tab to snap inside. What was apparently happening was corrosion of the Aluminum around the place the plastic turn knob/grab point seats into the hub cover, creating friction from the buildup of corrosion material to the eventual point of damage. So, Warn Premiums are going in because I have them on the 22 year old truck and they're super nice and Napaonline had for 298 shipped (I got an email today saying they were delayed, but called napa www and got through to Will in India and he actually figured it out and they will arrive tomorrow, so considering all NAPA stores, Autozone, etc. online are sold out, I got lucky I didn't have to go with cheap junk knock offs like MM, etc.).

Can you explain how locking the hubs PRIOR to engaging 4wd may cause damage?

I removed my front end driveshaft on my 90 Blazer K5, seems front end tripping over itself ( hard to describe ), bought locking hubs. My question is do I use locking position or free position ? I DO Not have the front driveshaft installed anymore. Thanks.

When both hubs are locked, do the left and right wheels turn at the same rate, in sync with each other?
@macsgarage
@macsgarage 3 года назад
It depends on the style of differential in the axle. The locking hubs connect or disconnect the wheels with the differential. A vast majority of axles with locking hubs have an open differential which allows the wheels to easily spin at different speeds even though they are mechanically linked. In those systems you need both hubs locked in order to get power to either one. I'll do a video about differential types at some point.

So you only need this if your truck is full time awd but if its part time you dont need it correct?
@macsgarage
@macsgarage 2 года назад
The full time 4wd trucks (np203) don't have lock outs. They need both ends hooked in all the time to work. Unless they have a part time kit installed. Part time 4x4 trucks have a variety of different ways to disengage the front axle. Lockout hubs like this were extremely common but not the only option through the mid 80s. By the early 90s this style of disengagement was uncommon replaced by other styles. In some trucks the front axle was even left engaged all the time and the transfer case simply disconnected the front drive shaft but everything still spun. What kind of truck are you asking about? Chances are it has a different style of disconnect.
