I liked the team work between you guys, always happy to see people actually using their 4x4s for what they were intended.. and the Triton driver really did well considering the tires he was using. Fun video!

Thank you. Yeah, I wish I had the rest of it, batteries, then it rained and we got badly stuck, 4 creeks filled up, then it got dark, LOL, would've been good to see but we were trying our best to get outta there before dark and get the stuck vehicles out.

quality camera work. great to see so many different truck tackling the same obstacles. definately turn down the music a bit please champ. after 29 mins wearing headphones i got a massive headache.. really wanted to hear the engines working. Nice job (apart from the safety issues ) but mostly great !!

the guy in the patrol is good, drives straight into the rut, too easy, no sliding, full control, knows what hes doing (3:30), great video, makes me wanna get my ute dirty

I'm glad you're enjoying the videos Michael. Yeah, the Triton did a fantastic job considering it's stock. The traction control system work really good on them. The tyres he was running were AT-771's.

The Triton doesn't come stock with a rear locker. The one in the video has a factory rear air locker but it doesn't work, probably damaged wire or air hose, so everything was done with traction control. Well, the advantages are different. Front and rear lockers would be the best as you tackle the terrain straight-on locked. Traction control kicks in when the computer detects slippage and in some cases that might be too late. Having one set of lockers depends what terrain you're climbing.

Glad to know you have got your Surf sorted out. The last one I had was a 1995 model but had no center locking diff. In fact I never knew they came out with a center locking diif. That must have been a special import model to have that feature as all the ones I have seen over the years never had that feature. Yours is a first.

Enjoy it for as long as possible as they are a great vehicle. Just keep an eye on the idler arm as that is the weak link in the front end. After replacing mine many times, I eventually bought another new one which had a grease nipple . Then got solid brass bushes made and greased them eervy 1000 km and never had any more problems.

I've come to the conclusion that the Mitsubishi L200 (triton) is a badass! I'm buying one

Have been on all the Toyota Surf forums in Australia , New Zealand and Toyota 4runner forums in the USA and have found that the Surfs and 4runners never had a centre locking diff. The first center locking diff that was fitted to a Toyota 4x4 was the 80 series Landcruiser. I think you have a manual set of diff lockers front and rear - not AIR LOCKERS as in ARB. The orange light just lets you know that you have engaged 4x4 same as on my 4runner

I love that you kept the original audio even tho you added music, love hearing the engine and instructions being given. Also that Nissan is a beast. Didn't even break a sweat over most obstacles. But when it drove through the ruts and got caught on I assume the diff all the time? That made me close my eyes, denting the diff housing is not good...

Awesome looking tracks out there. Great video. Only thing I can suggest is keep well clear when winching, I noticed a couple of guys in the vid getting very close to the cable when under tension. And I think your mate in the Triton needs to invest in a snorkel if he plans to keep hitting the bog holes at speed. LOL

On top of that it had a 3" Exhaust frmo the dump pipe with no silencer , just the cat convertor. rear end had 30 degrees of flex and neevr had a wheel in the air. Rock Sliders underneath, ARB bull bar with 12 LB Warn winch and Lightforce HID spotlams. Only got bogged once and that was due to the ground giving way under neath. Winched myself out backwards !!! Best 4x4 I have ever owned . Wish I had kept it as it was more capable than any patrol or 100 series Landcruiser.

Real off-roading👍👍👍.. Nice pace though to triton, even if it was not equipped with lockers..

Shortly after I posted my reply, a mate of mine rang me to tell me that the LTD Edition did come with a centre locking diff. Its fine when you are going up a steep rocky incline or a muddy hill, providing you have all four wheels on the ground,the centre diff lock works a treat, but if you get cross axled then its not much use as I have discovered in an 80 series Landcruiser.

really awesome video!, that Hilux and Patrol are amazing machines!!, but I really have to give credit to the Triton, that truck is not lifted, no winch, no 'prop tires and yet have a really nice performance, a very reliable machine I must say. I would love to share tracks with you pals in my lifted D21 truck.

It will go well as long as you have all four wheels on the ground. If you get cross axled, then the center locking diff may not as well be there, as it does not lock the wheel with the least traction, so you will still be in strife. A rear locker will get you out of 90 % of most situations. Mine had lockers front and rear, 2" body lifet and 3" lift at the rear , 2" on the front. Rear had 80 series L/Cruiser spring with Ford F250 LONG travel Shocks. 33" Pro-Comp Xtreme Terrain tryes on 12 " rims.

Wow, nice video! To an uninitiated American it looked like a Toyota Hilux with a flat bed (tub), a couple of Land Cruisers, a Mitsubishi Triton, and a Nissan Patrol. Here instead of the Hilux we have the equally capable Tacoma, our Land Cruisers are too big and luxury oriented but we do have the incredible 4Runner, no Triton, or Patrol. Our pre 2005 Nissan Pathfinder looks a lot like the Patrol and probably is as capable. Nissan made the Xterra until 2014 which is their best off road SUV ever sold here and offers their Frontier to compete with the Tacoma. We don’t have the low rpm torque producing diesel engines which is a shame. We do have high horsepower high rpm torque gas engines. You generally will see higher lifts and bigger tires and fewer snorkel kits here. Oh….and more jeeps.

I have had a few surfs over the years and none of them have had a center diff lock. What year is yours and in which country are you ?? Double check the front hubs to see if they are manual or auto,

mine has an LSD in the rear. i found this when i was adjusting the drums a while back. ive been looking at buying myself a 70 serries landcruiser flat deck or a 06 triton that has front and rear diff lockers

Its a 1996 surf SSRG 3L turbo diesel. i found an explanation The 3rd gen surfs (96 on) have part time and full time settings. Part time centre diff locked ,orange light on (H4L) Full time centre diff unlocked ,orange light off ( H4 green wheels on) one allows me to use 4wd on the road without binding the diffs etc

i believe it has automatic hubs as thats what the 4wd in the transfer lever is for. i had the truck on the beach the other night and if i have the lever in the H2-H4 position and press the 4wd button, it goes into 4 high. i know this because i had all 4 wheel spinning trying to tow a log. I also under stand the 4L means low ratio but was confused about what the H4L means. google tells me it locks the center diff but other people tell me that the transfer case is locked the moment its in 4wd?

I think you have got your self a litle confused. The Surf has an Auto box with an electric push button on the Auto chnage lever which when loush in tell you on the dashboard whetheryou are in 4WD. 2H and 4H means you are either in 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive in HIGH range. When you shift the transfer lever into L thats Low range and you can either be in 2 wheel drive in LOW range or FOUR wheel drive - provided you have engaged 4wd on the transfer lever. Dont forget to engage the front hubs.

Hey guys. i was wondering if you could help me understand the 4wd in my toyota surf a bit better. on the 4wd stick, it has H2-H4. then shift the stick down it has H4L, then shift it to the left and push up it has its 4L. What im a little confused with is if i have the stick in the H2-H4 position and press the 4wd button, does that put the car in to H4? and if i shift the stick down, what does the H4L mean?

the arial is about 1m tall. Ill grab a pic of the shifter tomorrow when there is some light and ill do the same for the transfer case. you can see the surf in my dp though
