Thank you for Play 3. A great highlight of how and when to address bench decorum. As for the defender, I think his legs are spread wide at 10:31 , beyond the width of his shoulders, and thus outside of his verticality. Hard to tell where the impact occurs but it looks like left leg of ball handler first impacts right leg of defender. Regardless, from the way the defender is standing with his feet spread wide, I'd be inclined to rule a blocking foul.

Play 2 was indeed a great job of the Lead officiating their primary. Knowing that the Center, who is responsible for half of that lane area, does not have knowledge of it as they are instead watching the shooter in the corner, the lead picks it up and makes sure it is being officiated. Understanding it is a hard foul with a good distance away form the Lead, I love how quickly he closes out on the play, running up to the area of the foul to prevent any extra action taking place. Also, a justifiable upgrade to intentional foul. I'd love to have that official on my crew. If I can add one final bit, the trail official, who was responsible for the semicircle which the fouling player was positioned in when he fouled, seems to have missed the action. With that being the case, they must quickly reset mentally, assess the situation, and make it their duty to move forward... ensuring that they know how the game will proceed. I am saying this because someone on that crew needs to know that after the free throws for the intentional foul are shot, the ball will be brought all the way back to the opposite side of the court for a throw in to the offended team at the end line, next to the lane line (the location closest to the spot of the intentional foul). As a crew, we can be great partners by ensuring we gather information, process it, and help our crew in the case that they lose site of where the ball should be inbounded next.

Play 6 - In MN, Offensive rebound in the front court would go to :20, but this is offensive rebound in the back court... :35 seconds.

Play 5 has a lot going on.... At 15:25 we have a travel coming off the rebound by White 4. At 15:32 the ball obtains backcourt status after White 12 has a disrupted dribble and it begins rolling onto the division line. From my view it does not look like the defender knocked the ball loose, and even if they did the offensive player still touches the ball last as it begins to roll away. White 12 is then the first to touch the ball, causing a backcourt violation. The trail rules this violation after the pass, but should have clearly signaled a stop clock with a strong whistle and an open hand raised above the head first, followed by the backcourt signal which they correctly used afterwards. It can also be argued that when White 12 has their disrupted dribble, they used their arm to prevent freedom of movement against the defender, illegally ensuring that they get access to the loose ball before the defender does. Finally, seeing as this is a backcourt violation, the ball will now be inbounded in the frontcourt of Team Black. This means it should be placed at one of the four frontcourt spots nearest to where the violation occurred (in this case, the 28 foot mark on the sideline). [I wrote this out prior to watching your explanation, and I'm glad our thoughts on this play aligned. I missed the substitute, you are correct, he did in fact just walk on the court as a sub during the dead ball. Lots going on in this play!]

There is at least 1 instance when a back court violation does not result in front court throw-in. A1, holding the ball in the front court right next to the division line makes a bounce pass, bouncing it in the back-court before it is caught by A2 in the front court. This is over-and back, but the violation occurred in team A's front court. The result is a back-court throw in for Team B.

Great question, and the answer which followed it helps build confidence in officials knowing that they can work together as a team to get the game right. We don't have to work as an island even though it is preached to us to officiate our primary area.

Play 5 - I agree there's 2 Backcourt violations. I would have missed the first as well, In real time I would have ruled a tip. I trust Greg's opinions in these videos 100%, but I'm just not sure I agree with his throw in interpretation. More likely I have missed something, but I was under the assumption that the 4 front court throw in spots were to be used when non-shooting defensive fouls are called in the front court. Things like out of bounds and jump balls would still revert to nearest point of interruption. In this case, its a backcourt violation, not a foul, so I assume inbound at point of interruption. If i'm wrong, I'll take it on the chin, but looking for the "rule" that says otherwise.
@jeremycarlson7904
@jeremycarlson7904 6 месяцев назад
Found my own answer. Fouls and violations are put in the 4 spots. I was wrongfully grouping "out of bounds" as a type of violation. I knew OOB was point of interruption... so I am satified and Greg has it right again! Why would I ever doubt him!?

Play 3 [7:03] At [7:08] after the rebound, I see a double dribble. I also have a charge after the pass and at minimum official warning for the coach but should be a technical foul on the coach for coming onto the court. On Bonus play - shot clock setting. I am in Georgia and would put the shot clock at 25 but the team would also have a 10 count to get to the front.

I've officiated basketball a total of ten years but hung up my shoes back in '14. Last year, I started up again and this year is my first year doing varsity again. I have never done 3 man mechanics and all the switching has got my head spinning. Any suggestions to help simplify switches for me?
@spencermillburn921
@spencermillburn921 7 месяцев назад
What has helped me is to make sure I referee my area. As trail, once the ball leaves your area, if you follow the ball, you might miss the lead official switching. It's much easier to see them switch if you stick with your primary. Another thing I do is when I'm in transition, I'll take a quick glance to see if an official is behind me. This will help me be in the right place. Sometimes, as center, I get an on ball match up and don't notice that my partner has made the switch. So a quick glance in transition can be helpful so I don't get out of position. Finally, remember that you're out there to referee a game. Sometimes, when I get caught up in positioning issues, I forget to referee the game.
@anthonyhall7623
@anthonyhall7623 6 месяцев назад
1. You just need the reps, so relax. 2. Lead and Trail ref on the strong side/ball side. Center is weak side. 3. So, when the ball changes sides, a rotation could be needed. 4. Rotation not complete until you reach the opposite side. 5. So, don't rotate on shots, drives, or reverse passes. Stop the rotation and back out.

If possession has been established in the front court and the ball gets tipped out of bounds by the defense. On the inbounds pass (along the sideline), can the offensive team pass the ball into the backcourt to resume play or must the entry pass remain in the front court?
@OpaTheOpenminded
@OpaTheOpenminded 7 месяцев назад
Yes they can legally pass the ball directly into the backcourt. This is because during inbound passes, the ball does not have a court status, so the ball can legally be thrown directly into the backcourt regardless of its inbounding location around the court. Additionally, there is a special rule for this situation where an airborne player catching the inbounded pass can legally land with one foot in the frontcourt first, followed by one foot landing in the backcourt. This only applies to an airborne player. If the player is standing on the court with one foot in the frontcourt and the other foot lifted in the air, catches the ball, then places that foot down in the backcourt, they will have committed a backcourt violation. Finally, a player standing on the court with one foot in the backcourt, and one foot in the frontcourt, can also legally catch an inbounded pass. A little bit more information then you asked for, but hopefully it serves to help you on your path.

Play 1 player never got all 3 points past mid-court. Incorrect call.
@OpaTheOpenminded
@OpaTheOpenminded 7 месяцев назад
Keep in mind that "all 3 points" is only referring to a player who is in control of the ball AND dribbling the ball from backcourt to frontcourt. If you catch the ball and continue holding it, with one foot in the backcourt, and one foot in the frontcourt, lifting that backcourt foot off of the floor now places you in frontcourt status. For proof on this, we look to Rule 4, Section 4, Articles 1, 2, and 6. Art 1 (summarized): a ball in contact with a player (aka the player is holding the ball) is in the backcourt if the player or ball is touching the backcourt (player has one foot touching backcourt, so they are in backcourt). Art 2: a ball in contact with a player is in the frontcourt if neither ball nor player is touching backcourt (once the player lifts that foot off the backcourt, they are no longer touching it; they now have frontcourt status). And now for the Article which is sometimes accidentally applied to all situations... Art 6. Art 6: DURING A DRIBBLE from backcourt to frontcourt, the ball is in the frontcourt when the ball and both feet (all 3 points) of the dribbler touch the court entirely in the frontcourt. With all that in mind, on Play 1 you are right, that was an incorrect call. The player had backcourt status with one foot in the backcourt, jumped into the air (airborne players have the same court-status as when they last touched the floor), and then landed with a foot first in the backcourt before his second foot landed in the frontcourt. The ball had backcourt status the moment before he caught it, the player also had backcourt status the moment before he caught it, and the player had backcourt status when he landed. Legal play.

no violation on play 1

On play 1: C is really out of position which is why he missed the call. If he was positioned on the other side of the division line he could see all that traffic in front of him and rule the pass unobstructed. Instead he stayed back and let the players pass him and block his view. Although truthfully the backcourt violation should really be the trails call. If he set up closer to the 28’ mark he can see the play as it moves toward him and then pivot to his normal position once they set up in the half court.
@mikey6310
@mikey6310 7 месяцев назад
Play 1: Player never established front court position and maintained one foot in the backcourt at all times, so this was incorrectly ruled by the official. Play 2: The official signaled the wrong type of foul - he should've signaled an offensive or team-control foul, not a raised close fist. Other than that, that is a valid intentional foul ruling, just needs to learn how to signal offensive fouls. Play 3: Official ruled incorrectly - the official should've ruled an offensive charge and issued an offensive foul for the charge accordingly. This was not a block. Play 4: No violation/foul committed by the white team player because it wasn't intentional, but rather just an attempt to give the ball back. Technical fouls for delay of game are only issued at the discretion of a referee if the referee feels it was intentionally committed - in this case, it was not intentional. Play 5: No ruling was incorrect considering the white team player maintained ball control throughout the whole situation - black team never touched the ball. The white team player committed a backcourt violation despite if the mixup where the ball accidentally hit HIS OWN shoe was intentional or not, he was the last to touch it and the first to touch it in backcourt, so this should've been ruled a backcourt violation.

In play one its the correct ruling. Number 5 has already established front court status. Once his foot went behind the line its considered backcourt.
@bradwilliams6691

nope. look again. prior to going airborne, he has one foot in the backcourt, which gives him backcourt status. He jumps in the air, catches ball and lands both feet simultaneously with one foot in the backcourt. This is a legal play.

@OpaTheOpenminded 7 месяцев назад
You are correct in the fact that he did at one point establish frontcourt status at 1::46 in the game, however he re-establishes himself in the backcourt at 1::45 before going airborne, while airborne you maintain the same court-status as when you last touched the floor (so he was still in backcourt status), and he landed first with a foot in the backcourt which again maintained his backcourt status. Legal play. Incorrect ruling.
