this was abysmal testing. 1. When you test an already damaged gel block with another round, the tearing/pockets by the first round will have an effect. you need to use 1 gel block per bullet type then align them parallel and view through them all at once. 2. when you test them all you need to get to the end and compare them side by side.
Very true. With Ammo shortages right now, that's all i was able to find for 308. I went with green tip 5.56 as it is the 'strongest' variant for it. Unfair testing but does give an idea of how they stack, all things considered.
@@toolsoffreedom407i wanna thank you for you time and I also understand it’s difficult to find ammo. Just wanted to point out it’s an apples vs oranges. When ammo gets back circulation try it with soft point. Watch how the results differ. Keep up the good work and thank you again.
Yeah, not to be a stickler, but I was just about to mention that it drives me crazy, that in any video they test .308 vs anything else, they always use soft point 🙄 if you can find it, try 168 grain HPBT for .308 and you'll get a nice wound channel
@@toolsoffreedom407 or to be truly equal, and not break the bank on ammo; just use fmjs for all of them, and then you're truly just comparing the round and not the bullet, if you take my meaning.
I am glad to see others talk about the difference in bullet dynamics between the soft points that expand quickly and the FMJ. The better test would be to use all fmj
@@toolsoffreedom407 you had 3 blocks, put a new block in front where 99% of damage is so it's easy to see and put previous shot blocks behind.... "rotate". It isn't rocket science lmao
They all went through 2 walls. The 3rd wall split was caused by the split of the first 2 walls. Its very obvious with the 308 round. ….I will need more Dremamine for next one.
And are you able to shoulder it just fine? Or mostly used on bench? People keep telling me the weight is a downfall. But the way I see it, someone better be pretty accurate with the 5.56 bc the .308 has more stopping power.
Great video. Very interesting. I use 308 for deer hunting and I love it. Good all purpose round. May try hunting with 7.62x39 this year but finding good hunting ammo in that caliber is tough, especially now! Thanks for the good work. Ps: I have the same exact Ruger American in 308. Best bolt rifle for the money!
I live in Florida, and we have smaller deer than most states, and I know a lot of good hunters that tried the 7.62x 39 and they never found the deer they shot. They found just a few drops of blood at the place deer was shot, but no more blood. Not trying to discourage you, just what I was told. Almost all of them was using the SKS!😅
I hunt with alot of different caliber rifles and the 7.62x39 is good on big deer, I even took a cow elk. I used 154gr. soft points the rifle was a cz 527 7.62x39. Regards from MT.
Thanks for the video. Maybe next time a cylinder block on top of the ballistic gel will prevent the blocks for deforming so much and allowing the bullet to exit from the top.
Thanks for watching and the feedback! Will probably try it, but the blocks deforming is what its all about i think. It shows how different rounds react to the gel. So rounds coming out of the gel is not always bad, it shows how the bullets tend to behave on soft material.
Ah, that makes sense. But you would obtain a more precise depth of penetration if the blocks were secured (for us anal retentive types). Great video though.
I liked this just now. One question, is the green tip on the 5.56 not meaning a fragnenting type, thus least possible penetration? What is that one instead?
Nice video bro 😎 I’ve had an AR (5.56) for years now but just recently got an AK (7.62x39). I used to have a 30-06 but as I got older the beating on my shoulder got to be too much when I’d run a couple of boxes though it. I’ve never shot a 308 though I hear the recoil is less than a 30-06. I may have to try one some day.
If you get your 30-06 barrel threaded and add a muzzle brake, it becomes much more pleasant to shoot. Multi-layer rubber buttpads are nice too. Edit: there are also clamp on muzzle brakes if you don't wanna bother with threading.
i have 308 compact ruger american 18 inch . now i used heavy grain 185. i have shot 30 06 and unless u using the heavy grain on the 30 06 then it will be much different but usually is 185 240 on the 30 06 but it balances on the rifle weight now my rifle has boyds wood stock so is not light weight . i will say its pretty much the same unless you are using 308 140 150 grain tops it will be much less recoil but still 308 is heavy no matter what you will have to come down another notch caliber if you want less recoil because i feel you i have arthritis and back issues but again when you come down in caliber you will not feel the power of a 308 or 30 06 calibers
Better if it was apple to apples .. use FMJ on 5.56, 7×62×39 and 308 .. green tip for the 5.56 is for armor piercing round .. 308 rifle use a short barrel to match the other rifles .. make it as comparable as it can be .. maybe your results maybe very different then ..
Great video.... would like to see what the green tip would have done in the 20 inch barrel..... probably a little more damage due to higher velocity...
Thank you for this test. So the 308 is best in this test & if in bear country, use Nosler Partition or equivalent for controlled expansion to insure depth.
You need to change block after shooting each caliber to avoid a mess to have a possible to see a clean destruction of each bullet without anything else of another cartridges
By the third or fourth time you said “next up is the .308”, I started looking right, left, and behind me 😭. I was actually really tired and started to doze off where I was sitting, at that exact moment. So I thought he was talking to me to wake up 😭 such a weird coincidence, and very unsettling to think the guy on my phone on youtube can see me and interact with me from a pre recorded video lmao
a scoped 308(with a talented shooter, plus right ammo for its job) is the perfect sniping tool for support in mid-long urban combat, a well placed 308 round disables any human, stops cars and light trucks, and weights almost 60% the total weight of a .50 kit rifle, ammo, scope, etc.
308 is definitely a very capable round. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. The 5.56 might disappear before 308 as the new 6.8mm is right around the corner. The most versatile caliber by far.
I have never ever seen a 308 stop a car. You may disable it eventually after it travels a substantial distance but you will not stop it. Not even 50 cal with AP round…the vehicle will keep rolling/driving for some time. There is no such thing as stopping a car with rifle bullet. Its a myth. Pure physics….you are putting a rifle bullet weight energy against a 4000lb vehicle bullet.
Yeah, even a .50 is going to have issues stopping a vehicle in one hit, .308 is gonna take many many more then the one to stop it in a meaningful distance. By that I mean that vehicle might be damaged, but it’s gonna keep rolling for a fair bit longer then you would think. Get your vehicle going at 30mph and put it in neutral, check how long it takes to stop with no brakes, now judge if that distance is still within your effective range. .308 might take out the driver, and if your lucky they spasm and jam a foot on the brakes, other then that that vehicle is going to be out of your effective range.
Thank you brother! So far it's been all good. Shooting cinder blocks or paper plates or ballistics gel there isn't ricochets. Only some concrete flying back to me, but with the sunglasses i wear has been enough. Might take it back a little bit. I do it mainly so everything is in frame and looks good, and to give the round its best possible chance. Love the support brother. Cheers 🍻
everyone complained about the "apples to oranges" aspect of the video. But data is data is data. It still helps us to quantify things. for example, if someone owns those 3 guns, those might be the exact 3 types of ammo they use. They might use the green tips for 556, and everyone loves the steel ammo for 762 and they might have soft point 308 for hunting. cheers
The tulammo is definitely inferior ammo. Good for plinking, self defense and thats about it. I would never recommend it for hunting or competition shooting. It's hard to find better ammo. Every gun store only has cheap steel cased 7.62x39.
@@toolsoffreedom407 yep police and politicians don't see leftist burning and murdering on our streets then leftist storm the capitol and every weak willed spinless idiot politician decides they will give the country to communists because some kids got antsy. I know, I have a little left for home protection and some steel case which i won't shoot till I can get more
Ok, but a full metal jacket 308 would outmatched the other two by far. I know because I use fmj in my 308 for practice (our military use it, so its very cheap here)
If you would hit with the 7.62 the center of the block you would have the same result or better also you didn't show the velocity of it which means you you wanted put the 7.62 on third place from the beginning. It's not fair. 👎
I stated that the chronograph was acting up, and doesn't show a reading every time. Also, it doesn't matter where you hit the block, as long as is not the edges. And i prefer to shoot 7.62x39. Its cheaper anf mor fun. I like AKs over ARs.
Imagine if humans populated numerous planets with different gravities and atmospheres. How much more complex and interesting the ballistics would be lol
What’s the point in shooting FMJ for any test? That round is for paper plinking/cheap ammo. Serves no purpose for anything other than shooting for fun. Test soft or hollows on targets. Those are primary target rounds
You didn't forget to look at it you're staring right at it while you're shooting you just didn't want to tell everybody that the AK was only doing like 22 or 2400 ft a second and that the AI is just as good and is moving way faster
