Herring a very near the bottom of the food chain pyramid that holds up our west coast ecosystems. As a fish, herring don't eat other fish but almost any fish will eat herring as well as whales, seals, sea lions, countless birds and other animals. Herring themselves prefer to eat plankton such as copepods, pteropods, and other planktonic crustaceans, as well as fish larvae.
