Thanks! Nice video. For anyone out there with this truck, if you have higher miles and haven't replaced that trans oil cooler on the side of the motor do it asap. Mine failed and mixed the coolant and trans fluid and blew my trans. $150 part ended up costing close to $5K and that was doing the labor myself other than having a shop rebuild the trans.
Something to consider also since you got the pan off is to go ahead and put the upgraded solenoid and sensor if you haven't done so already. My sensor went bad and truck went into Limp mode. It doesn't matter how careful you are, that nasty transmission fluid seems to get everywhere when flushing...lol.
Are you still running the original heat exchanger? If so, I’d consider swapping it for an upgraded version or delete it and use a remote cooler. I had no idea the heat exchanger was even there until it failed. Also, pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever commented on any RU-vid video! Oh, one more thing. I got a roll of heater hose from the parts store (5/8” I believe) and it fit over the steel tubing that runs to the trans. I cut the hose long enough to have it come out from under the truck and into a container where I could see from above. I think I also put a hose clamp on it just so it wouldn’t blow off and make a huge mess. Good luck! Josh
I’ve always been told if you don’t flush your trans on a regular intervals do not flush your trans just out of the blue at like 130 grand because you will stir up dirt and with in 6 months to a year it will go out. And I learned the hard way and shop had a trans flush machine that was state of art and the perfectly working trans went out in 3 months. So don’t do that !
Actually no, initial flush with 5 gallons hyd oil,, then flushed that out and filled with dexron 3. Ran that for about a month and then flushed that with full synthetic. So about 15 gallons total.
What's your average trans temperature while city driving? OK, we never get it as hot as you guys over in the UK, but I've had my smarty going nuts at 220°f. It cools down after lockup slightly, I put it down to bad trans fluid, did a dump n flush twice and its shaved 5 degrees off. I'm wondering if the electronic fan clutch is stuffed. It's crept up maybe to 230 max, and that's running the 48re tune. Bone stock(reverted to stock) , it sticks to 210. This isn't even towing? Should I up the smarty alarm threshold?
If you have a stock cooler system, heat exchanger and front air to oil cooler, you should be around engine temps. The 230 mark suggest to me slipping in TC and or trans cliches. The mystery switch would be a good cheap option to test out TC issues, plus it is awesome..
@@thomaswalker3157 I just googled it. Why didn't I find this freebie mod sooner?! Everything is stock. "Allegedly" it's had a transmission upgrade but no one can clarify this. Being in the UK, its harder to get professional help without travelling.
This dude builds some bad ass tunes for these trucks. It makes a huge difference in Temps and keeps the convertor locked when it should be. Give him a call or hit him up by email and you won't be sorry.
@@jamesvaldez4093 I've got his tunes, 12v, 12v high horse and mpg tune. But before I got the tune, the "sales guy" said upgraded transmission. The 12v high horse power tune, is THE best. It loads default and if I'm good to the truck on the mpg tune, can JUST get 9.2l per 100km. I know its not mpg but do the math. Its nearly 29 uk's mpg!
@@monkehbitch Nice!! His customer service is great too. He's currently working with me on a tow tune that fits my conditions. I live in AZ and tow in some areas that have 10% grades and now in the summer our Temps can reach 115 degrees ambient. Makes for some rough conditions.
Your supoosed to delete that thermostat on the trans cooler. They commonly fail and when they fail they fail in the closed position basically cutting off the main trans cooler and over heating your trans!!! It’s real easy to delete it. Remove a little tiny snap ring and pull out the ball and spring if i remember. I know theres some companies that make a kit for it to. Also! Remove that stupid cat i can see in the video!
I think on my ‘06 mega cab i took it out, and out the cap back in with the snap ring maybe? I know had a brand new trans cooler put on when i had the trans built. I spent like over $9,000 getting that trans built 110% solid with all billet shafts, billet triple disc converter, kevlar clutch packs, billet accumulator pistons, 1/2”braided stainless steel trans lines and anodized blue AN fittings for the trans lines., every single upgrade you could do i opted for no expense spared . I put on a new factory trans cooler, deleted the thermostat in there And deleted and by passed all the factory heat exchanger crap on the side of the block so engine coolant wasn’t heating/ or cooling as the theory goes, the trans fluid. Less chance of a strawberry milkshake! An After market external trans cooler got mounted up under the bed with fans on a thermostat and manual override switch blowing thru it as back up insurance. All the lines were 1/2” braided stainless steel with AN fittings. It was a super clean trick looking install. I didn’t have the trans case painted i didn’t want to take the extra several days to do it as i was without a truck and motorcycle bound for a few weeks while the trans was being built and In the mtns of colorado. Welding The drain plug in the bottom of stock pan is a good idea and the budget way, i opted for a deep maghytec pan, its oringed so no more gaskets to Mess with ever again when doing filter changes, and has a drain plug, and extra bungs for temp sensors etc. plus it held like an extra 2 gallons of trans fluid lol. The oversized trans cooler lines held even more extra. When it comes to these dodge under built transmissions from the factory you have to do every and anything you can to keep them cool and over build them with the highest quality billet parts. It gets pricey. The absolute best transmission you can get for a dodge cummins from sun coast transmissions starts at $10,000 and goes up from there, and that doesn’t include a triple disc torque converter, labor, fluids, tax etc. you could easily be into it $13,000-$14,000 all said and done. Does the average joe need a $15,000 transmission? No, but i wanted the best i could get, reliability and didnt want it burning up any rime soon. Any transmission is going to blow up at some point or another, of its running and moving and shifting the clock is ticking. Indont have to worry about dodge autos anymore, my ‘02 HO 24v has the nv5600 6 speed and i wouldn’t have it any other way. The ‘06 mega cab was the only truck I’ve ever had that was an automatic and ill never have another one. Ive had a few first gen dodge cummins trucks and they have all been 5 speeds with the getrag. The getrag is a Good solid 5 speed and is stout. Its Not as big as a nv4500 but they don’t have the 5th gear nut problem that plagues the nv4500’s. The nv5600 is just a monster. Weights in at 360 lbs. the only thing bigger is an eaton fuller super 6 from a dump truck! And as everything else extra fluid capacity is key! I bolted on the genos garage cool-it pto coolers. They add an extra qt of fluid capacity. And with the nv5600 theres a TSB out there that says to over fill the fluid by 1 qt from the top with the tower removed! It helps keep the input/output shaft bearings lubricated and helps save the synchros is what I’ve read. I looked into manual swapping my Mega cab with a g56, and prolly could have easily done it for what i spent having a stage 4 billet trans built to the tune of $9500 bucks. A manual swap can be done cheaper than that depending on how you source parts piece by piece or find an donor truck but theres a guy on youtube here called ‘decentgarage’ and he goes thru the entire process in a 4 part video series of every aspect of it if your interested look up his channel. Its a great 4 part video series to watch even if your not considering a manual swap. He used a g56 6 speed out of a 3rd gen and swaps it into his quad cab 4 door first gen long bed 4x4 full frame off resto. Its a great channel to check Out (decentgarage hes in salt lake city UT) I nerd out on a lot of this stuff and am like a catalogue of parts and info in my head. Heh. Im on my 7th cummins diesel. Ive had 5 first gen 12 valves. All 5 speed manuals. 4 of them 2wd. One a 4x4 flat bed truck. Inhad my 2006 mega can 24v that was built to the hilt, tein turbs, stage 4 trans, you name it it was done to that teuck, and my current truck is my mint condition immaculate 2002 24v high output 6 speed 4x4 quad cab long bed with only 90k- ish miles . Garage kept all its life, colorado truck all its life so no salt ever . I bought it from the original owner a 67 year old man, it was an old Man gramps truck that was garage kept! It only had 79k on it when i bought it. no rust no dents no damage. The interior is immaculately clean and smells brand new. The underside and the frame is so clean you could eat off it. as a joke one time I polished and waxed the oil pan till it shined like a mirror lol. No oil leaks. Everything’s been bullet proofed, and upgraded in excess with no expense spared. One of these days when it hits 100k miles I’m gunna p pump swap it. But not till it hits 100k miles and is ‘broken in’
