This video shows the tools and steps required to adjust the front band on a 48RE Transmission installed on a Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9 Cummins. Back off the locking nut, torque the adjustment screw clockwise to 72 inch pounds, turn adjustment screw 1-3/4 turns counterclockwise and tighten the lock nut while holding the adjustment screw stationary.

this is right from dodge's shop manual hope this helps clear up some of the questions BAND ADJUSTMENT 1. Adjust front and rear bands as follows: a. Loosen locknut on each band adjusting screw 4-5 turns. b. Tighten both adjusting screws to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.). c. Back off front band adjusting screw 1-3/4 turns, for diesel vehicles, or 1-1/2 turns for V-10 vehicles. d. Back off rear band adjusting screw 3 turns. e. Hold each adjusting screw in position and tighten locknut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.

Good video. I was told by the Dodge dealer that my transmission (when new) was normal to give a jerky motion at times when going up my driveway. 4 years later, I was told by another garage that I needed a rebuild or new transmission. I researched on RU-vid and decided to try a new modulator and adjusting the band's in transmission. The transmission works better now than when it was brand new. Unbelievable! Alot of people are getting ripped off!

Leave it to Dodge to rip everyone off. I love Cummins, and the 2nd and 4th Gen rams body style looks awesome, but chrysler just keeps cutting corners with the Dodge ram.

Get this... I went to my local dealer and they tried charger g my 900$ for a transmission coolant flush. They also tried to convince me that my ac compressor was broken and it was going to be 700 bucks when it needed up being an 11 dollar air recycler valve.

PU shifted badly from first to second after pulling some heavy loads from AZ to CO. Changed solenoid and fluid with little change. Adjusted band as per your video. No threads sticking out after adjustment but it did adjust. Shifts nice now. Thank you.

Because if your transmission needs band adjustment that mean your band need to be replaced. If you adjust that band you will damage the drum and the rest of the components do to the metal particles of the damage drum.

Did this to my truck today, glad I did. I have a 2004 dodge ram cummins. Worried I may need to take it to a shop. My truck would downshift prematurely form 2nd to 1st, or would not stay in second unless I held the rpms almost to 2000 when accelerating, and if I slowed down to around 20 mph it would drop into first. Once it shifted into third, everything was fine. This little adjustment fixed all of this. Thanks.

Most important is low reverse band adjustment. This band being loose will cause a lot of symptoms..like sluggish engagement etc.dont forget to do both bands. The low reverse is the same spec but after tourqe of 72 inch pounds back off 3 turns.

Good video. I do all my own wrenching for general maintenance on my 05 Ram 5.9 as well. Same as your truck only 3500. Bought new in Aug. 05 now with 444,000 miles as of today, and running better than new. Amsoil Synthetics throughout since day 1. One thing I do that I noticed you do not is that I use brake clean on everything first and or, brush off anything that I am going to undue, twist or turn or replace. I always start with clean grit and grime free surfaces so that everything comes off easy and tightens back up properly metal to metal.

Great video. Here's the the service manual information on bands: BAND ADJUSTMENT AND FINAL (1) Adjust front and rear bands as follows: (a) Loosen locknut on each band adjusting screw 4-5 turns. (b) Tighten both adjusting screws to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.). (c) Back off front band adjusting screw 1-3/4 turns. (d) Back off rear band adjusting screw 3 turns. (e) Hold each adjusting screw in position and tighten locknut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque. This should be done (at least front one) when changing fluid. If you don't you might experience problems coming out of first then jumping to normal shifting, second-third downshifting then back to normal possiby with an ODB code, etc.. It's a simple procedure except doing the first time.

Was towing my 9k fifth wheel up a steep windy road with my 05 Cummins, when I slowed down on level ground and moving from 1st to second, it had a hard jerk into second and back out to first, then came to a very steep paved up hill driveway, started up and the tranny slipped and finally started rolling. It's time for a fluid change, I am going to change the solenoid and sensor, along with your band spec. Hoping this solves it.

Shop wanted $800 to replace the trans governor solenoid/ pressure sensor & see if that helped. Did it myself and cured the shuttle surging but not the sticking in 3rd gear. Watched your video & adjusted the bands. FIXED! Drives like new.

Holy smokes $800!? I just did mine, upgraded to the Borg Warner HD solenoid, transducer, output speed sensor, 3-4 accumulator spring, & filter. Including the 7qts of atf+4 in all it cost me about $120. But my tranny still seems to have the same symptoms, stutter shift or holding on to 2nd too long or reaching for 3rd, not sure what's wrong, but I'll try the band adjustment and see how that goes.

This is how a instructional video is supposed to be done. Great job. Prior to you doing this adjustment , was your tranny doing that shuttle shifting between 2-3 or 1-2 . That's what I'm experiencing and I'm hoping this will help it

My 04 dodge 2500 is vibrating and shuttering when going into reverse and 1st and 2nd gear could this be the cause of this. After it gets passed these it runs like it should

How do I know if i need adjustment ? My transmission ( 2005 3500 DUALLY automatic ) delays a bit when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear when floored.

I upgraded my solenoid to a Borg Warner and also replaced the transducer, filter, 3-4 accumulator spring, & output speed sensor. Still experiencing some hard shifting between 2-3 possibly 1-2. I'll try adjusting the band tomorrow, I bought the truck with around 230k, has 250k now. No clue if it's ever been adjusted. I'll keep you posted and let you know how it goes, thanks for the video.

TheLorenz4413 I did not notice any difference after the adjustment. I believe it has something to do with overdrive lockup.

​@@albertclark8980going to have to replace the governor pressure solenoid get the one from. Thoroughbred diesel performance. But first check if you have codes for the apps sensor or otherwise named the throttle position sensor

Stuck in 3rd and runs okay after i turn off the ignition to turn on again.. Fluids seems clean on the dip stick, noticed it had a weird sound from tje trans when i accelerate hard.. Now it still shifts okay but cant hold high gears in and out overdrive

Hey Rob, Quick question why after putting the foot pound adjustment on the torch bolt do you back off a turn and a half what's the purpose seems like your back right where you started?

Hi Rick, I assume the purpose of backing the nut off is to ensure the band can fully disengage when not applied by the Piston. The apply Piston has more than enough travel to make up for the slack off backing the bolt off. When you tighten the adjusting bolt to 72" pounds you are actually applying the band, so it needs some slack put back in when you are done.

What do I do if the star bolt is all the way in now and doesn't have much sticking out past the tightening nut but still have the symptoms described by other viewers? I did this procedure once about 6 months ago it worked fine until yesterday tried it again but doesn't seem to have helped. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably looking at rebuild time. There is a slip in band you can buy, but you won't know how the clutches are doing if you don't pull the trans and disassemble it.

Curious...What symptoms present themselves that would indicate the torque band needs adjustment? What difference did you notice after the torque band service? 2004 Ram 2500 similar transmission if not the exact same.

If your truck is either stuck on 1 or 2nd gear (wouldn't upshift), then adjusting the band might solve the issue.

Thank you so much for this video as I'm going to attempt this in the spring after this rain lets up. I have a 2005 2500 cummins with only 45k miles on it always babied bone stock. The only real symptom I'm having is sometimes it will randomly from the 1 to 2 shift it like stutters or surges for a second until I give it a little more gas then it shifts and starts driving like normal. I've noticed it mainly happens if I'm driving like an 80 year old man and barely giving it any gas. Would this possibly fix it or maybe a solenoid issues? This spring I plan to adjust the front band and drop the pan to change out the fluid.

Change the modulator and adjust the bands. inner and outer. Worked great on mine. Better than new!

I got it with 27000 and it's never been done in two hundred thousand miles, not slipping but figured it is time since I finally changed the fluid and you are supposed to do it with each change, fluid has just got a little dirty and didn't smell bad

good morning, I would like to ask you about the tightening of the star bolt, it is done with the hand only when reaching the top ... and then at the end it is released a little to look like the turkish ?????????? I would appreciate help at that point in the video

It is tightened inwards to 72 inch pounds, then reversed outwards for 1 and 7/8ths of a turn and locked in place with the locking nut.

What would the max adjustment be though? Because if the band is completely worn and you adjust it it’ll start running metal to metal.

Just a quick question. I know its how its done, but it doesn't make sense that you torque the screw down to 72 inch pounds then immediately unscrew it out 1.75 turns??

Where the band goes around the drum, its a tight tolerance. So torquing the band down clamps it to the drum. Since 72 inch pounds is the right torque to get the band completely wrapped around the drum with no slack left, you dont need to go any tighter, but any loser *may cause* issues. Turning the adjuster out 1.75 turns gives the band the proper clearance to the drum so that it doesnt drag against it, but in the event of a shift, the shift time wont be delayed because the piston had to travel further to make the band grab the drum. Does that clear up the band operation and why you have to do it the way given in the manual.

@@IgotGreens101 Old response and a little late but if someone can use the info, here it is: to convert inch/lbs to ft/lbs, divide by 12. To convert ft/lbs to inch/lbs, multiply by 12. So 72 inch/lbs to ft/lbs is 6 ft/lbs.

If it gets to 3rd and won't go into 4th it isn't a band problem. The 48RE is really a 3 speed trans with an overdrive unit bolted on the back. When it's in overdrive, the main body of the trans is in 3rd and the bolted on overdrive unit is giving you 4th.

If you pull the pan and valve body you might find the anchor in the pan...

Hey Rob D, thanks for the outstanding combo of video clarity, tool line-up, etc. What symptoms lead you to this procedure? I have an '03-2500D/48E. The tranni feels fine when cold but soon after warm-up it feels like it has a high shift point in 1st and definitely has a slip from 2nd to 3rd. I've replaced the solenoid and pressure sensors, which helped a little, but did not solve the slip. Will the belt tightening affect my 2nd-to-3rd slippage?

I'm going to try this tomorrow, I'm not exactly sure what my problem is but I suddenly lost overdrive and reverse the other day, then drove it today and everything was back normal. not sure what is really wrong.

So I did this on my 07 and when I went to tighten the adjusting screw by hand it just kept going all the way and I just stopped when it got flush with the transmission housing. Any ideas on what could be going on here?

Most likely the wedge piece between the screw and band as fallen out. You will need to drop the pan and valve body to get it back in. Have you lost second gear? If it goes from 1st to 3rd this is most likely the problem.

Hey guys I got a 06 2500 ram when I take off my rpms hit 4 to 5 and it takes a few seconds to change recently went to a shop n they said that it had no second gear on the tranny i jus changed the oil as well what do yall recommend I do?

Seems like you lost the band for 2nd gear. 1st I'd pull the pan and see if anything is sitting in the bottom of it. Your 2nd gear band lever may be sitting down there....

Same other videos are also taking about governor solenoid upgrade helping. But i haven't tried anything yet. Mine seems to be sticking in 1st then jumping to 3rd after i let off gas a bit

Forgive my lack of knowledge but will this work on my 06 dodge 2500 mega cab 4x4? It seems to rev high before shifting from first to second and from second to third sometimes I'll let go of gas pedal and it will shift.

No, there are different specs for gas. I'm pretty sure it's in the video description.

@@kennyblades5862 yes I just found above in the video. perfect thanks to you, and for the information in France 72 inch is converted to 8 NM. the front band adjusting screw is outside the housing and the rear band adjusting screw is inside the drain housing, right ?

I adjusted the front band screw and when I put the truck in drive it would not move until I got on the throttle. Is this normal or could the band be too tight?

The band is about done. Gonna have the transmission rebuilt to a stage 2.
