A few cents to add here, as the approach looks ok to me. I think you could have dunked a lot of these if you didn't try to grab the rim. The moment you start the idea of grabbing the rim, you lose the control of the ball by default. You cannot grab the rim before you made the dunk (it's physically impossible). And when you keep on doing that, you're not really improving ball control (cause you don't need to control the ball to grab the rim). So it becomes a vicious cycle that most dunkers who needed vertical height improvement to dunk went through (including myself). So basically, if you learn to lay the ball in a sort of like a layup, and eventually push it down with the fingers, you'll make the dunk. And once you're able to do that, and jump a tiny bit higher, you'll be able to choose to grab the rim or not. But you cannot really grab it before the dunk is pretty much made. This means, you can, and probably should jump a bit further from the rim, so you don't have to decelerate at the end as well. You don't have to follow this advice but I think you stopped every dunk attempt at the point of losing the ball, you can see that the grabbing motion kills the ball control, and the ball is lost even way before you really start grabbing the rim. And this is the easiest way to fix this, or at least, way easier than jumping inches higher and perfecting jump approach to not have to care about this because there's too much room to spare.
A lot of what you suggested I noticed while I was trying these attempts. Especially, jumping further away from the rim. I'll definitely take into consideration of not trying to grab the rim! Thanks for the tips!
I heard if u make ur heel not touch the ground with ur block foot will improve ur approach bc it shortens ur stretch shortening cycle so u could try that
Just keep jumping! And be mindful when you're jumping. Visualizing also helps. Check out my technique video, I have some exercises that helped improve my technique.
Man I remember working out really hard to dunk, as someone who finally made it, Take an advice from me, stop trying so hard and focus on school. Your not talented in terms of height. Had you been 6”3 you’d be windmill dunking, it’s not your fault. Your the perfect dunker born in an imperfect body. But I guess I really learned to quit until I got to the end, so you probably gotta follow through as well. Just warning you, you will probably regret working this hard. But nevertheless, solid work man
Bro me too, I can easily touch the rim on a 10ft rim but I every time I try dunk with a ball it feels like I jump less. I think it’s because you have to control two things while in the air. Trying to jump high and controlling the ball while in the air but idk
As other's mentioned. 1. Arm swing 2. Control of the ball (usually when you catch the ball it's at the top and has less momentum, so its easier to control) 3. Additional weight from the ball adds up. Now, obviously the harder part is actually learning the control and timing of the technique.
Just to add a bit more insight. Arm swing according to PJPerformance is about 15-20% of your jump. Having a ball in your hands makes that number a lot less efficient.
I used to find that too, but I think it was I didn't have the technique down for throwing lobs. I got better after practicing. Still need to improve tho.
