I worked on both my uncles' farms and we never had any problems connecting to their post hole diggers, because of the way they stored them. After getting done using the post hole digger we would go to where the attachments were stored and sink the post hole digger into the ground about half way up the auger. Pull the drive shaft, unhook the three points and drive off. Next time we needed it back up the tractor over the three points and lower the arms. Since the auger was ridged in the ground, the weight of the attachment points are being supported and as long as the PTO has not been attached we had the gearbox actually allow side to side movement to align them. Connect the three point and attach the PTO. Pull the auger up, shake it, move the loose dirt back into the hole and we were done.

His farm was somewhere warm and not too clay heavy. Because a winter stuck in the ground like that here and your have clay hard stuck and not be able to pull it out. We did similar though just up under a tree and throw a chain over a low branch and sling the thing by the gear box.

You gave a tip some time ago that helped me out more than anything about attaching a rear PTO shaft. Shift the PTO lever away from the rear PTO slot and your spline spins freely. AMAZINGLY simple and effective.🚜

“Telescopic Draft Links”. Most people who purchase compact tractors will have no clue what I’m talking about. They are available as an option on almost all “reputable” tractor brands but dealers don’t spec them (I assume to keep the price down) and buyers don’t know to ask. It makes hooking up 3point implements so much easier and eliminates the need for a quick-hitch and the compatibility issues associated with them.

It always amazes me when people struggle attaching a pto. Slow down, understand how it works and it is about as easy as plugging into an electrical outlet. Adding complexity will never make it easier.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 2 года назад
One line of difficulty that is a pain even if you slow down is aligning the key on the shaft properly. If your attachment is too heavy to move and thus to turn its shaft to align, and if the tractor isn't aligned at the point where you parked it to attach, well that creates work.

@@GoodWorksTractors but you still have to turn the PTO to engage the PTO Link device. Looks to me like 1/4 of a turn vs. 1/12 of a turn with a standard 6 spline PTO. When you turn the tractor off the PTO shaft will turn by hand, some will turn free, others 1/6 of a turn. One of those PTO wrenches seems like a much more sensible solution.

I had to make my landscape rake and box blade quick hitch compatible. I used extended draw pins and welded home built brackets for the top hook that are the same height on both attachments and my tiller which was already quick hitch compatible. This way I don't have to raise and lower the top hook. It's made this old man's life much easier.😊

Folks who hate their PTO hook up should invest in a simple bottle brush, mineral spirits and a rag to clean the splines to remove any grease clumps that form over winter, then re-grease it... Ironic that one of the original tractor "quick attach" items ISO 500 standard PTO connector is now seen as such a problem.

I find my post hole auger to be fairly easy to put on/take off. I just disassemble it- pull the pin and take the pto shaft and gearbox/auger off. Then pull the pin between the other two parts. It’s an easy one man job.
@blueboatone5653
@blueboatone5653 2 года назад
I find your channel very entertaining and your honesty refreshing. The post hole digger becomes an easy 1 man job if you just disconnect the pieces. Remove the auger and the hoop that connects to the 3 point. Put the hoop on the 3 point arms first and lean it forward. Then put on the mast and hook up the PTO. The last step is to attach the auger. Easy peasy, but not super quick. Instead of a quick hitch, I use Pat's Easy Change. I have a mix of old and new attachments and most are not standardized. The Pat's system works with everything. No more having to remove the quick hitch when it won't match up.

One thing that surprises me is that folks grease their PTO shaft couplings. Both the male and female ends. This may be fine when it's 80 degrees outside, but what happens when it's cold? Why not use a simple oil can with something like 10W-30 oil in it.

Backhoes can be a challenge to hookup. Was wondering if the quick hitch comments were related to hooking up the quick hitch itself, such as after removing a backhoe to go back to 3pt implements. It can be challenging to attach a quick hitch frame to your 3pt arms when solo, just like a post hole digger.

Compared to putting the manure loader on the Farmall M or Farmall 400 of my youth the farm, the compact tractor loaders of today are push pull click click. I was installing and removing the loader on the M and 400 when I was in seventh grade. Even worse with the 4 row cultivator attachments that bolted to the frame sides of the big row crop tractors. They were heavy, articulated, not self supporting and it felt like they were waiting to ambush me.

+1 Any rear mount blade (box or simple back blade), or similar ground engaging implement, that doesn't have trailing gauge wheels(set behind not to the sides). Without that trailing wheel and a slack toplink(eg chain) they loose 80% of their grading ability, every bump or hole the tractor front tire hits causes opposite swing in the back. Unless the operator is moving super slow and adjusting height for every bump it's super easy to setup a wavy washboard effect. It's the whole reason road graders have the blade in front of the rear wheels. Ideally rear mount graders and box blades would have something like a pintle hitch and two rear wheels, the three point could still be rigged to provide lift for transport or backing up while not interfering when lowered for use. This could easilly be extended into a small pulled belly scraper when substantial material needs to be moved a distance(much better than a box blade). Even more ideal is a mid mount blade like the old Farmall cubs and 140s had, but with an industry-standardized hitch. Of course the downside is this requires tractors designed for function over fashion. This mid mount is also ideal for cultivators/row-harrows and seeders. Also mowers of course but mainly beacause of maneuvering space.

Thank you for your knowledge on all this. Trial and what goes wrong. Yes I hated the pull out to side KABOTA mower deck. The rear baggers getting full to fast. I think if people would just keep the pins and bushings in a supply of NEW ones. Have spares. Fighting a old bushing just to use it till it dies. Is fighting yourself. Clean the holes. Pre check the fit. I noticed that your pictures showed putting on snow equipment out in cold. The metal is cold, your fingers are cold. Put on before it snows. Listen to weather report get ready before snow hits. I remember how nice it was getting into plow trucks all set to go out. Better than those 4 AM dark yards, trying to line up plow hitch. The supervisor mad because we were not out getting on roads, when super could have been more proactive and set up plows just during work hours. Putting a sander on a dump, sliding into place to hit those rear tail dump gates latches, there is no room for play. The hinged sanders ( leg free standing) get all corroded up and nothing works all frozen closed with corrosion. Just power wash off everything after finishing the job.grease fitting. A good one will have lots of zerts. I would water spray off Backhoe everytime I finished a job. Cleaned the dirt off on all joints. Clean off excess GREASE. The huge build up, of grease just attracks lots of DIRT. Makes it difficult to put a bushing in without a fight or pounding it out of shape.

I really dislike the "newer" style PTO rings. I grew up with the spring pins, though a pain in the ***, they are easier to put on compared to the rings that you have to push one ring, pull the other, then while pulling the ring towards you then push the PTO on the splines. Hate it! As for connecting post hole digger, I usually have no issue. I have a 6' x 12" auger. It lays on the ground (on a pallet). I back up and connect the two lower arms first, then the top. It's quite easy on the back and I can usually get it connected in a few minutes.

Once one has the hookup installed for the front mount snow blower , it only takes a few minutes to remove the snow blower and re attach the FEL. A back mount snow blower that one has to drive through snow first to clear the snow, that has to be the dumbest idea I've ever seen. Try to drive through crusted 2 feet deep snow to clear it with the rear mount pull snow blower. Not going to happen. My personal ideal option is a rear mounted blade combined with the front mount snow blower or FEL, works very well. The rest of your video was informative.

I also remove the Zturn mower deck to use the zturn as a mule on tight trails. 4 clips and a belt and it's out. Just as easy to put it back on. I don't have trouble with my PTO. Keep it clean and lubricated. Hit it with WD40 and it works like a champ. For the post hole digger I use to break it down into 3 parts so it was easier to handle. Now I have a stand.

FYI, just wanted to tell you why I think the JDQA is better than SSQA. First is the equipment is closer to the tractor on the JDQA. Second, I was pulling with a chain and had the bucket all the way forward and when I backed up to make the pull the bucket came off!! And yes the levers were down and it was locked properly! The third reason is it’s much less complicated and has to be cheaper to produce. It’s too bad the John Deere didn’t make it to the industry standard.

Hey Courtney, re: quick hitch "for reasons unknown"....the ASAE s278.6 spec doc (page 106 on the 1998 version) specifies the diameter and it is the same value for Cat1, Cat2, and Cat3. Ditto the upper hook opening diameter. Now, I don't know the reason for (and perhaps that's what you were actually musing about), but I can guess that a standardization of the openings was desired for maximum re-use of parts across the industry. Another reason might have been to reduce the stress in those mounting holes by increasing the radius (and thus both the surface area and volume of material related to bending/warping and resistance to propagation of micro-cracking) for durability reasons. I would imagine that they are designed principally with a pulling force in mind, and the extra radius provides a better geometry to handle the load of trying to stretch open the "hooks" in the longitudinal direction w.r.t. the tractor's axis of motion (imagine straightening out a fishhook by pulling sideways on the barbed end. The closer the fishhook is to a "vee" shape, the easier that becomes). That's just a guess, but from an engineering aspect I can see that as being a weak point they were trying to mitigate with that choice. I'll do some research later if I get bored and I'll update with any findings that bring further clarity.

I don’t think I could disagree with you. I hate hooking up PTOs! I always have problems hooking them up, such a pain. All other attachments just have their quirks and if you want to use them you deal with the pain if you want to use them. I’ve been wanting a PTO link for a while but they are so pricey I don’t know if I can justify buying one.

I have to say the three point post digger is the worst. Getting it on can be a pain but the in our rocky soil sometimes a single hole is 10 shear bolts and finishing it off by hand. Went to hydraulic unit and will never go back. !

I can't believe that the front mount snowblower made your list. Blowing snow out of our yard and off of our 1/4 mile long driveway is one of the main reasons we are buying a utility tractor. With a cab too! Kind of leaning towards orange also...

I have to admit the 3 point quick hitch is one of my least favorite attachments I've had on my tractor. The Harbor Freight Category 1 quick hitch in my case. Now not because of not knowing how to properly use it but, I found that the variances in the older 3 point equipment that I have doesn't exactly match up to the quick hitch.

One of the attachments I had in mind when I purchased my 1025r 6 years ago was a posthole digger. I had and still have about 700 feet of split rail posts to replace, and more to install. Tractor Time with Tim put a post hole digger on his most hated list. Now it is on yours as well. I think I may just rent one of the 1-man post hole diggers from the local rental company. It's $100/day (or a weekend if you pick it up Friday), so I could get it done in a few weekends of hard work. As I get older renting is more appealing, but has the downside of making me kill myself getting as much done as I can during the rental window.

Just a FYI for ya...Lowes has been having the Earthquake One Man Auger on sale for $229 at least a couple times a year. I've got one with the 8" bit and though it definitely isn't "professional grade", it'll let you do it at your pace.

Maybe I’m naive because we use 5100GN….but don’t sub compact tractors or newer tractors have a 540-N-540E? Put the pto in N and it’s free spinning to make alignment simply for PTO shafts?

I like the PTO shaft connector. I'd been considering building something very much like that for a while just for my Howard Selectatilth.

Getting older and stiffer, hard to work rear mounted attachments and see whats going on. Would hope that more front mounted attachments be made, and tractor beefed up to handle stress and strain.

The problem I have with connecting the PTO is, at least on my John Deere, the PTO does free wheel. So trying to turn the PTO shaft on a heavier devices can be a challenge when trying to line it up with the shaft.
@daddio7249
@daddio7249 2 года назад
Shift the pto selector lever to the mid mount pto or just in-between them. The rear shaft should then free wheel, at least my JD 1023E does.

The pto link locking pin should go in the opposite way to make it easier when you want to disconnect it.

I grew up never having a problem with pto connections. And I'm not talking about small stuff either. Pto link just looks like an expensive failure point to me. Rotate the implement shaft with your hands as you bring it up to the tractors pto shaft. On bigger implements like a 13' MoCo, there is one way that spins an overunning clutch so you don't have to drive the mechanism by hand. If you can't rotate the mechanism by hand on a shredder or medium to small implement, find out if there is a reason. Don't leave equipment in the weather. If you have to, cover the shafts and keep them greased.

I don’t have most of the attachments on the list. I have a 1025R. I have never removed my loader. Love the JDQA for the loader. Instead of getting a mid mount mower, I kept my JD X320 mower. Now I don’t have to remove the deck from it unless it is to do maintenance. That was one of the best things I did when I bought my 1025R. My post hole digger/auger is the most difficult to hook up only because it is not quick hitch compatible. I can hook up or remove it by myself. It is not a two person job. I can hook up the PTO shaft on it faster than you connected the PTO adapter in the video with nothing attached. So I don’t see the point in getting a PTO adapter.

I have a 2004 Case IH 24DXe tractor. no quick hitch and the FEL is a real PITA to re install. Removal is fairly easy but getting it level is a challenge. The 3-point hitch uses turnbuckles which are very easy to bend but extremely costly to replace. One of these days, I'll spend the $180 to replace them.

The thing I hate the worst about my back hoe for my Kabota L 2501 is if it sits for a while leaks down and when you go to hook it up the hose light long enough to hook up they made the pressure line too short but the return hooks up no problem so you had to get pry bars or the big backhoe out and pick that thing up set it on the tractor so you hook up the hoses
