I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

Dynamite content, Matt! This stuff really helps us beginners to get a clue. These items are much more important than having the best and most expensive lure on the market. Thanks for having a heart for us beginners to take the time to help us learn. Maybe some others are late comers to this sport; maybe some came without a boat; maybe some without $900.00 rods and reels, and maybe they, as I do, just want to be the best bass angler they can be in the years they have left. Last year I fished all winter whenever the water was soft, and confined to the bank, without any real success. I didn't even have hand warmers at that time. I'm doing it again this year, but I am planning to catch something this year. Sorry for the rank! I love your videos. They inspire me!

Thanks I like your tips and reminders. When you have been fishing as long as I have you tend to forget some of them. Also I have boxes of baits that never see daylight any longer. For example I have fished jerkbaits for years and my favorites were Rapala minnows, Bomber long A's and now I have replaced using them with Megabass 110's, Berkeley Stunna and Shimano's. I'm always going through my tackle boxes moving baits out and replacing with something new, interesting and sometimes better. Not saying that the older baits are not still good, many are. For instance the old Bomber Speed Shad. If you are fishing Buggs Island Lake in the spring it's hard to beat. I like your idea of fishing the sunny banks vs. the shady banks. Well back to tackle organization. Thanks again. Take care.

To your point on bait recommendations l’ve come to despise those “top five baits for the month videos” The content you and Randy and Jonny are putting out I believe is the best information on RU-vid. Although you guys have sponsors I don’t ever feel like I am watching an infomercial like I do with others.

Awesome Thank you! top 5 for a month never made sense to me. baits for march in alabama are different baits for march in wisconsin. makes a lot more sense to talk about top 5 baits for a specific season IMO

I never quite thought about the boats going by stirring up the fish. I did have a kayaker go between me and the bank where I was fishing this summer. That wasn't very nice. As far as trying new bait. Heck, everything has been pretty new this year. Mostly because of you I really worked on jigs. Now I would hardly go out without one tied on. LOL. These videos and tips have really helped me. Appreciate it!

I do a lot of kayak river fishing and I studied long and hard trying to decide which side of the bank to fish depending on current flow, inside bends versus outside bends, and most of all, debating whether to fish the sunny or shady side. Most of my buddies fish the shady bank and I always fish the shade pockets on the sunny side for the exact reason you mentioned. It made me poke my chest out a bit to hear you say it.... I'm actually thinking more logically to better improve my success like a true professional fisherman. .. better yet, thinking like professional Angler Matt Stefen! Please keep sharing these tips..... your channel is the absolute best there is!!! 👍🏻

Wow Matt. I felt like you were pointing to me with all the bait buying. Lol. When I started getting serious about fishing I researched all the baits and I was buying a lot of different types of baits. I am very comfortable with a couple of them, but I want to get more experience with some of those baits I bought. I know to also take the baits I am comfortable with but hopefully I can learn how to properly cast and reel some of these baits. Once I have a lot more experience then I will decide what baits I love and hate. I appreciate your advice. I learned a lot. Thanks Matt.

Matt it'd be really cool if you would do a five things you need to know about structures like one video could be five things you need to know about fishing points five things you need to know about fishing saddles five things you need to know about fishing bluff walls five things you need to know about fishing humps etc etc Jim from the bridgeford team did something that I've not seen a lot of RU-vidrs do and it's an excellent teaching tool in his last video he did one on fishing saddles and he used a marker board and actually illustrated what he was talking about just a suggestion I think that would be awesome if you Incorporated one into your five things you need to know if you do a structure series. As always tight lines and much love from Kansas.

I like to fish a Sunny point to where I can drop a crossed it from inside of a cove where I can either find structure on that point or a broken tree preferably put where I Fisher liberty reservoir in Maryland a lot of the things that you speak about 80% of it applies to how I fish but just need to learn more techniques on different baits, and how to fine where did the fish or mostly going to be hiding waiting on the bait fish on the points!? Either way your advice from your experience and what you see makes you a great angler, I know the world works around money and a lot of people do these channels to boost their money Makin abilities and teaching techniques but you’re more like the teacher in the classroom it’s really awesome what you’re doing, all you guys!!!!!!!

Something about the bird thing that a lot of ppl over look is that their absence tells you as much as their presence. I live in an area where we have a lot of smaller lakes- each county has a county lake and then usually a few other private lakes opened to the public- and if you want to know which lakes are good to fish- look for the birds. We have several lakes where you never see a Herron, crane, king fisher, nothing- and I can't get bit in these places to save my life. On the other hand- the swamps, rivers, sloughs, etc. are covered up in Blue Herron, cranes, etc.- and they're great places to catch a bass. There are bass in the lakes where you don't see birds but they're hard to catch and usually pretty small if you do- they don't look healthy. I think birds are an indicator that the whole eco system in a body of water is relatively healthy.

On my lake I watch/follow the loons, especially when their feeding their chicks! You can see the parents passing small fish from beak to beak. Just to help, I occasionally tossed them a rock bass. On the other hand you forgot to mention cows! We were prefishing an event and there were a number cows standing in a patch of lily pads stirring up the water...It was a herd of living docks! With the deeper ones I was using the "bumping the stump" technique. The shallower ones I was skipping a fluke under their bellies. Believe it or not we were catching keepers! Unfortunately they weren't there on tournament day. Once in a lifetime!!!

I’ve been bass fishing for five years now, last year I got a HDS7 Lawrence, and listening to you and trying to understand to be able to fish my way with your teaching method, am I going wrong by switching up the way I fish? You make me unafraid of throwing a swimming jig I’m just confused now about my breadline of 50 pounds on my Tutuila Diawa 8-1 I use for my swim beats to try to get the fish active and this past year I didn’t do too good so I’m definitely putting a depth finder on for the first time in five years of fishing I hope it’s steps my game up along with your techniques thank you, sorry for such a long message

Great tips. I have a question regarding following birds. I fish very clear weedy lakes in central Minnesota. Many times I will see loons and gulls feeding out in the basin of the lake on baitfish. In some cases they are not relating to the weed line at all, just over the basin. It could be 50 to 100ft deep out there...is that a swimbait, spoon, crankbait bite? How do you target and stay on those open water bait chasing fish. No forward facing sonar to use here....
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
You can mark them with sonar if you drive around. most likely those are schooling fish following shiners, minnows, or perch balls. Very hard to find without the right equipment but can be excellent fishing. Although its usually a here today gone tomorrow approach.

Matt outstanding very helpful.thank you what do you think about bank fishing early morning and you get to the spot you want to fish and their are a couple hundred geese on the water close to the bank? When I head down they will slowly swim off what are your thoughts on this? Do you think this affects the fishing?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
That many geese is not a great thing, but I dont think it takes long for things to settle down after they leave.

I always look for animal activity on the banks. It doesn't seem to work 100% of the time. Seeing squirrels, deer roaming doesn't appear to predict actively feeding bass. Common on the lake to see herons and I always will fish that bank.

I just had one of those “Aaa Haaa” moments…..fish the sunny bank and the pick off the shady spots. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ve always fished the shady side because I know that “fish don’t have eyelids “ and “keep your shadow behind you “.

Anglers craving to own baits is the bread and butter of the bait making companies. But every angler will have to learn and master the bait. Every time I make the choice if I'll buy a new bait I think "Do I already have something in my baitbox that probably rather use in the same situation", and most of the time I don't buy it. I donät want a ton of baits, I want the right baits.

It’s not “confidence” it’s “competence”. Substitute the word competence into everything you just said and see how it reads. It’s about what YOU as an individual fisherman are good at fishing effectively. And what you have a knack for. There’s a 100 ways to catch the same fish. Do what you know you are good at and what is productive for you.

Confidence baits are as you say. I do think confidence baits should mean you understand the whys and the hows. That said, it is wise to also break down other's confidence baits without trying to be biased so that in doing so, you are biased. Hence, the recommended try or closer examination of other ideas. Best to run experiments, just terrible on your wallet and time. Often time people lack understanding and you go down that rabbit hole with them. Some of us are able to crawl out and some are buried in it. Often time these rabbit holes are not life-threatening or have dire consequences and we just pretend we're all normal. Sometimes we get ostracized and hated for not taking shelter in that rabbit hole that they consider the norm whether or not we are correct. Say they want us to identify where the birds gather when fishing. Well, today the flocks of birds were just nuisance and not indicative of anything productive, offering only to you questions like why are there so many birds and do people really just drink bird poop water?
