One of the best 101 isolated cover I've seen, I think every angler of every level can understand your description Matt. Your channel is becoming my favourite
I always look for places that look out of place. Being a bank fisherman this is sometimes very difficult to fi d much less cast to. Lol. But when I find that place there are fish there. Great video, Matt.
Great tips Matt. This time of year ( pre-spawn) for many of us. If you ever find any grasses try “Yo Yoing” a lipless thru that grass and keep them honest by following up in that area with a swim bait. When northern pre staged bass get closer and closer to that magical time of mating/beds the swim bait bite can be crazy good. Only 1/3 of the northern male smallmouth (biggest, most dominant ones) will actually spawn. Those mature small mouth males unlike the largemouth males are even bigger than the female smallmouth that are spawning. They even make themselves look bigger than the are thru osmosis to keep the other 2/3 of the males away. They will then guard the beds and fry with their lives literally for up to 6 weeks with out even eating if need be. (Dr Mark Ridgway, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources/Harkness Research laboratory on Lake Opeongo)
The isolated deep pockets are goldmines in all water, tremendously so in creeks. I know it’s far from the same as standing water, but them slack pools always hold’n! Allll cover, is good cover. Great info! Looking forward to more rod build info 👂🔥
Interesting topic given the current emphasis on live scope, chasing pellagic fish around in deeper water and tournament strategy of filling limits with 2 pound "schooled" fish. To amplify Mr. Stefan's remarks, see Ken Smith's 6 part interview with Todd Driscoll of TX Parks and Wildlife - 41% of largemouth [Toledo Bend] tracked in a two year study were located on isolated structure on non-descript flats - strong correlation to size and typically didn't move much. A TX reservoir, to be sure, but other telemetry tracking studies suggest a sizable percentage of the total population in other types of water behave the same way.
Great video as always! If you ever get a chance to make a video on: -Smallmouth vs largemouth spawning behavior (water temp, and depth) -Or how water clarity affects spawning behavior (largemouth vs smallmouth)
Great idea for a series Matt- can't wait for the rest of them. I never thought about the fact that isolated cover doesn't necessarily have to be completely isolated- just isolated from anything like itself- good point.
Stoked about my first all kayak trip of the year this Sunday. So far looks like some pretty good conditions lining up for The River for this weekend and into Monday. Im picking Sunday Hopefully Im right. Anyways Just wanted to say that here in East TENNESSEE its time to get JACKIN BASS! and anything else that bites my plug. Got my new Mega Bass 110 in the matt Pro Blue yesterday, an BUTT load of Agent E's( looks like they have a tighter kick than the ol Dark Sleeper) Still waiting on the Structure gills from TW. Any ways good luck out there everybody going out this weekend PRE-SPAWN STOKED!
Matt, that was a lot of info in this video. Wow. I appreciate you taking the time and giving the advice to help others to try and improve their fishing. I will be looking forward to using it this weekend. Great video.
Thanks for those great tips Matt!!!!👊🏻 Will try & remember to use them this season!!! Getting a lot of good comments on your apparel!!😎 Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Good tips that isolated cover not only attracts fish but fisherman also . A lay down on a do nothing bank will be fished by everyone.need to fish the stuff that is not visible obvious in my opinion.
Great topic Matt and very well presented, I love the grapics shown, very well done! Some of my very best catches have come from isolated cover and I always search it out on new lakes.
Hey Matt, I was curious what’s your favorite color in the Stunna? For clear water!! I have trouble getting the smallmouth in the rivers I fish to commit to a regular 110 I have better success throwing the 110 Jr. I talked to Hank and asked him if he was going to get with Berkley and come up with a Jr and he shut it down pretty quick and said the Stunna was perfect size? You have to downsize every once in a while especially when fishing rivers where the forage is pretty small minnows!! I would love to see a Jr size Stunna!!! Maybe you can talk some sense into him lol
Great video and great tips. Duck blinds are great to fish and replenish often. A duck blind story...fishing a tournament on the James river I ran to a creek to fish a favorite blind and rounding the bend...nothing but decoys in the water and hunters in the blind. I wanted to stop and apologize but I would have probably been shot. Ruined my day and their's. Whoops 😁
Thanks for the video Matt. Regarding to the section about docks... would a floating restroom dock qualify? I fish several lakes that have a few of these usually in a cove of some sort. I have often thought that these would likely hold fish, but have always been "too shy/embarrassed" to fish them. What are your thoughts?
Interesting- been a few recent videos about this. Gist is that many more fish are on this seemingly randomly located pieces of structure. Others have suggested that bass are leaving “traditional” points, ditches, etc. because of fishing pressure. Seems to give fish quite a bit of credit - but I’m an inexperienced fisherman so my opinion is worth very little. What are your thoughts on this potential phenomena? Thanks for your work.
How many times have we been told to look for something different out on the lake, then when we get out there we fish history, missing that cover that we have seen a hundred times? I have been staying in ONE area and looking for that one thing that stands out on obvious and the not so obvious places. My waypoints are changing face!
I did not enjoy this video as much as the other guys. I left it playing to build your credits. Didn't even want to comment. I hate to take location/finding fish advice from others. About the only time I do is if there are fishing showing up at a certain location and they've been there recently like the day before. Even that, when they take me, it's dead. It's like that meme, when you go fishing the fish are active, but when you take me, there's a storm with waves and chops and wind, looking like the end of the world. My ex-cameraman always disappoint me just like the meme. And every time I pointed that out to him, he laughs bc he knows it's true.
