What do you wish you knew as a beginner Swimmer ?
@josephmckinney8802

Learning to breath and what to do during rest periods. First several times practicing you swim 25-50m then stop to catch your breath, how do you breath, count breaths? What do you do to prep yourself to be able to get to the next goal 100-200m and so on, then what do you do at these rest periods.

While I learned to flap about in swimming lessons as a kid, it wasn't until this year, at 33 years old, that I decided to get private swimming lessons with a coach to actually teach me Freestyle form and technique. Was the best thing I ever did in the pool
@rundown132
@rundown132 2 года назад
How long did it take you to learn?
@kkkrisada
@kkkrisada 2 года назад
@@rundown132 5 lessons. I learned how to kick (position of feet in the water/toes; did drills with kickboard). Freestyle hand technique: This took 2 lessons on its own as there are so many element I had never know (stages of the arm movement, elbow position, keeping my body mass narrow. Did drills with floaty between my legs). Breathing was harder for me than I realised, I found it psychologically odd learning to take more shallow breaths (opposed to trying to hold my breath for dear life for fear of drowning), as well as head positioning during breaths, he taught me to create a little pocket of air with a head tilt that allowed me to breath while half my face was stl underwater (for a non-swimmer that was mind blowing). Then there was combining it together for a consistent and flowing movement. Overall, it completely re-taught me how to swim, realising for 30 years I was doing it ALL wrong

@kkkrisada I'm just about 33 as well and just became a certified lifeguard. Didn't have the opportunity to take swimming lessons as a kid but learned how to swim breaststroke and elementary backstroke when I was 14. Over the last few years I've taught myself the sidestroke and can do that really well, but I look forward to learning freestyle, too!

I started learning to swim 2 months ago (I could swim 25m before) and I now can cover fairly comfortably the 1500m olympic triathlon distance. I swim 4 times a week. I am 26. If I could do it, you can do it too.... GTN definitely helped a lot.

I've a 20 metre pool. Started swimming just this week. I'm always tired by time I swim one length of 20 metres so I have to stop. But this week I covered 700m, but it took me a long time each session to get to that due to taking breaks . How did u get up to 1500m and not taking so many breaks ??
@FifalianaFR
@FifalianaFR 2 года назад
@@na-dk9vm my biggest issues, other than lack of technique was that my butt and leg sink making it really hard to cover distance and I used to think that I need to breath every 4 strokes. I fixed it by using sim short every other training (or buoyancy short, those neoprene shorts) and it helped ne be more flat. I also decided to take a breath every 2 strokes. Making the long distance more sustainable. And finally I work out my arms outside of water to get some strength. I also had some friends telling me what's wrong with my techniques. Anyway, I tried and watched everything I could. My goal was to do olympic distance triathlon this year.

I’m currently having lessons with a plan to actually complete a triathlon next year. Had a drowning accident when a kid and hated water ever since but set myself a challenge to conquer the fear and learn. Then complete a triathlon.
@33Jenesis
@33Jenesis Год назад
I almost died in a pool at 11. I conquered most of my fear learning to swim on my own since 2021. I had done long distance road races to overcome my hatred for running. However I don’t know how to ride a bike yet but perhaps one day I’d conquer my fear of falling from a speedy rack to learn it. Yes I do think about triathlon but not committed to the idea.
@whysosalty

@@33Jenesis sounds so similar. Glad you’re conquering those fears. I hated running and really enjoy it now. Especially trail running (shhh now road runners 😜). Grew up in Brescia Becons so I’ve always mountain biked. So cycling was always my pleasure and escape.

Never swam before and I am 68 and taking swimming lessons three times a week. I just got goggles that are for ocean swimming, tempered glass that are anti fog. This makes a big difference. My teacher takes video’s of me and sends them to me so I can see what I am doing right or wrong. Those goggles have a nose thing because I just can’t handle water going in my nose, it just creeps me out. It is hard being coordinated with the breathing, but I will not give up!

I am a senior adult newbie learning since mid 2021. It took using floating belt and snorkel for a long time to get over sinking fear. It took a long time using snorkel while practicing form to get everything aligned. It took a very long time to get breathing right while not affecting everything else. Now I can breathe bilaterally while cutting thru water without much splashing. I also swim breaststroke well, don’t get tired doing longer distance.

Two things: I wish I knew about stretching routines for my shoulders. I would have saved myself many “off weeks” waiting for my shoulders to heal. I also wished I knew that the catch and pull are two distinct actions. Although they happen very close to each other they should be kept far apart….!

Got my first individual swimming lesson at 2.45 today argh. I can swim BS ok/well (taught myself at 18 -now a lllllot older than that) but struggle with FC. I become the kid who was dumped at the shallow end at school and immediately lose confidence. For me the key always feels like it’s the rotation. Get that and with it comes the breathing and then I relaaaaax but that only happens occasionally!

and dont forget to close your fingers when your pulling or the water just goes straight through 🙂
@33Jenesis
@33Jenesis Год назад
Not correct. Closed fingers create drag.
@ladyinthetrampcinderellaman
@@33Jenesis More drag when pulling is better to catch more water 😂 thats why EVF is so important too. But really open hands or closed hands doesnt make a difference, its just when you close your fingers your entire arm tends to become more tense which then can slow your stroke. The open or closed fingers isnt the issue

You need to practice folding knees towards chest while pushing arms downwards. When knees are close to chest, butt drops downwards automatically, thus facilitates planting feet on pool floor. Your eyes should continue to look down until your feet are under you. Left your head last when your body is upright and arms by your side.
