Thanks for running through. Very divided on breaking inheritance and permission - as sharepoint modern moved away from it but has gone full circle back

Hi Ksee!! I wonder if the 100,000 item issue we had in classic SharePoint and breaking inheritance is still an issue in modern SharePoint? This is similar to the concerns with the 5000 view limit threshold and column indexing, seems like Microsoft has been resolving these issue quietly in the background. Definitely worth a test though. Just ensure the test if against a true modern SharePoint site in SPO (vs a classic site within SPO)

Very clear and informational. I work a lot on Teams and Sharepoint and not yet an expert and didn't know some of the things you can achieve with Teams. Thank you

Excellent video. Thanks for this. We have been struggling with how to effectively setup channels, teams, permissions and this will help me overcome some of them.

Thank you for the video DeShon! I must say, I'm a little conflicted by breaking modern's wide and flat principles with this, but this seems like the least worst way to implement it :) Compared to (I believe) every other way of doing this, this method preserves visibility for users on Team Sites (on the SP backend), and keeps access contained in the M365 group; those are big pluses!

yes, I see your point. I think it is one of those things that are not obvious, and as soon as there is a different security use case, normal users are creating private channels or other teams, which IMO breaks the context of the other data, and also creates multiple options for the user to store the data. The fact that you can lock down a folder from other team members, and/or share a specific file/folder with users outside of the team gives a new range of possibilities and keeping the group of files together.

Solid tips man. Users in my org copy/paste/attach links verses using integrated Teams apps or uploading file to channels/chats
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
hey Teddy! you're right, the users will do whatever path of least resistance to get it done. I'm learning sometimes the right way takes too many steps and is hard to sustain over time :-)

This works well only for small orgs. For a large program with 100+ members and stakeholders, individually permissioning each file or folder is not maintainable.
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
You're absolutely right! Individually permissioning each file or folder can become very time-consuming and difficult to maintain, especially for large organizations. In such cases, it may be more practical to consider using SharePoint site permissions and SharePoint security groups to manage permissions at a broader level. This way, you can assign permissions to a group of users or stakeholders and apply those permissions across multiple files or folders. It's important to find a balance between granularity and manageability when setting up permissions in Microsoft Teams.

So when you make these security changes in Teams, they’re reflected in the backend SPO site?
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
yes! you got it! the Azure AD group used by the MS Team is the same Azure AD group used to manage permissions in the connected SharePoint site. Once I made this correlation, all type of fun stuff opened up. We can now go beyond the implied limits of MS Teams security and cut down on some unnecessary channels and teams. Fun stuff. Keep it clean

Is there a way to mirror permissions across between channels? I have a corporate central team that needs to share permissions as assigned by local channels.

Hi. I have a team of 5 people and I am looking for a specific solution 1. I want to give only editing rights to my team in Excel or Spreadsheet in selected columns while I don't want to make any changes anywhere in the entire excel 2. I want to disable cut, copy, paste and download features. Can we achieve this by office 365 or any other software or cloud based services.

For the Reports folder sharing, how does another SSChg: BP Team member know that the Reports folder was shared by someone else and users outside the SSChg: BP Team can view all the contents? I suppose you can see that a share link was generated but not where or with whom it was shared with? Perhaps for better tracking we would share link to the folder with the Proj: Tesla SP Demo Team's group, then add the link as a channel tab? Your thoughts?
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
hello! thanks for watching. You are right, there is not system indicator that the Reports folder is being shared out. This would require inner communication with the team. One other approach that I like to use, is to create two folders right off the bat "admin" meaning only owners can see and "external" meaning folks outside of the team can see. Then configure the security settings accordingly. where where file within these folders would adjust to the security setting for the folder. I love setting up the "alternate security" settings at these parent folder levels, for ease of maintenance and indicators that security is different.
