The Grande Tour Episode 5.
Day 2, 3 and 4: 10th, 11th and 12th July 2023
CABOOSE VILLAGE: part of Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort between Sevier and Marysvale in Utah. Built on what was the route of the Rio Grande branch to Marysvale, Caboose Village is a collection of railroad cars the you can stay in! I stayed in the Rio Grande caboose (of course!)
The old railroad path is now a cycle path, and I hire a bike to explore and see the tunnel that remains.
Beautiful natural surroundings in a canyon filled with railroad history. Novelty, interesting, relaxing. A great stay!
See here for more info on Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort, with other ways to stay and other activities to do. Why not tell them you saw my video ;-)
Next up: I follow some of the Rio Grande Marysvale Branch route and head across to Grand Junction, Colorado!
This is part of my amazing historic railroad-based trip between Salt Lake City and Denver.

Marysvale is a fun base for ATVing. There are ghost mines and other things to see when you head up into the mountains.

Yeah there's a lot of area to explore. It really was quite hot when I was there, so the morning bike ride was enough for me. Maybe more next time!

Hello Simon, very nice travel report about your trip through the USA. I think a caboose like this is great as accommodation, I really like these old cabooses. An interesting and beautiful area and these old railway tunnels. Great film, thank you for showing it and best regards. wolfgang

You’re having the journey of a lifetime. The thing about the US that always intrigues me whenever I travel through is where have all the locals disappeared to?
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 10 месяцев назад
Oh it was such an awesome trip! I know what you mean, some places there just seems to be no-one around! I did meet plenty of locals in other places though.

@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 10 месяцев назад
Thanks very much! Yeah, Dale and Karyn perhaps didn't show as much in their video, they only stayed one night. BUT, they did do a video on the whole Marysvale Branch a few years ago, which is really good. Look it up if you haven't seen it. They both lived at points along the line in the past, so it's very familiar to them personally.

@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy Hope all is well and that the issues are not insurmountable. I have walked the abandoned right away of the Monon Railroad in Indiana. Back in the day they ran 2 steam trains to pickup fans of Indiana University and Purdue University to take them to the games. While the locomotive used by IU is gone Purdue’s is on their campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. Though the Monon was different from the Rio Grand, it is similar since it no longer exists. Their problem was they had no track going into Chicago, Illinois or Louisville, Kentucky. The Monon is also known as the CIL (Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville). America has lots of stories of railroad because it made us as a nation. They moved people and goods all across the growing country and still does. Take care of yourself and am waiting for your next episode.

This is awesome! I love old railway track footpaths and cycle paths. Got loads here in Snowdonia but love seeing different ones… to be honest seeing one in sunshine is a change! Also, how did you manage to not trespass into that tunnel?! Shhh don’t tell everyone but I’m a bugger for jumping fences to see stuff. And the food looked lovely!
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 5 месяцев назад
Oh I loved this place. Staying in a caboose was such a nice novelty, being hands-on with a bit of heritage and able to call it your own for a bit. The area was so beautiful and peaceful. As I say by the tunnel, the thought of big freight trains interrupting the tranquility was quite exciting. I obviously was set on behaving around the tunnel. You seen threats about trespassing literally everywhere in the US, you almost get afraid to take one step too far! I did think about it though 😂 I am keen to visit some old rail paths here in the UK. There's the Strawberry Line near me here, and the Somerset & Dorset out from Bath Spa.

@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy My wife had largely trained me to not do such things now. Lol. Do not trespass signs at interesting sites used to be a mere suggestion for me.
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 9 месяцев назад
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi Well, I say as long as you are respectful, there's no harm. I did step over and touch the Rio Grande Southern trestle, which I'm not supposed to really. I was just talking with my Dad at how America is obsessed with trespassing. They put "No Trespassing" signs on things you'd either never think to enter, or a featureless flat area of gravel, or a big tall fence where you can't see either end! It seems so weird. 🤷‍♂️
@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi

@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy it is not nearly so bad here in Canada. The US has many oddities.
@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi
@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi 9 месяцев назад
@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy …it is a litigious culture so I guess people and local governments are afraid of being sued. In Canada that tunnel would more likely have a danger falling rock sign or such with a suggestion not to enter. In the US the trail authority can’t be sued easily if someone passes a no trespass sign and twists their ankle.
