This was written for the Battle of the Bits Winter Chip XVI. It's kind of a collection of new (for me) techniques with TIATracker that allow for more flexibility in stuff I can do, like the arpeggiated section at 0:50- by using tons of patterns that are cut up into smaller chunks I can save a lot of space with repetitive patterns like that. Unfortunately I didn't have enough instruments to change volumes during that section, which I would have to build the track around to accomplish (there are only 7 instruments per track, and that instrument takes two instrument slots).

Wow, straight square waves! Most of the oscilloscope videos I watch have strange-looking squares, but these are in straight line! 100% perfection for sure!

It depends on the output of the emulator. I'm sure a real Atari 2600 would look very different
@DMARtunes

Low pass filters also cause that.
@bryede

They end up sounding the same. The chip generates square waves, but by the time you pass it through capacitors on the board, you no longer have output down to 0 Hz (constant voltage) so you see the rise/fall of squares, but the flat DC areas fall away.

Does anyone who follows this channel know what happened to the channel Tracker Ninja? They were a small acct which posted S3M/ IT/ XM/ demoscene etc files from the bulletin board days, complete with preserved original instrument list messages.. but now it appears they've completely disappeared. It is a very tragic loss to the whole demoscene community I think.

with the tia you could theoreticaly get in-tune notes if you choose slitly off tune notes to start with, it will make it out of tune so that it becomes more in-tune (sory for bad englis, i didnt proofread)

Giving me The Messenger vibes for some reason. I’m imagining this being in a DLC for the game where instead of swapping between NES and Genesis, you swap between Atari 2600 and NES.

Tim wasn't in the right time or place for atari. it wasn't as popular in the uk as it is here, and due to the crash, the atari fell off, and he started iirc in 82 or 83.

I’m guessing Atari music isn’t usually this good either because they were being lazy or storage limitations
@Sinistar1983

Storage and the tools were way too primitive for anything even remotely helpful in development. Pen and paper was the name of the game.
@RushJet1
@RushJet1 3 года назад
@@Sinistar1983 It would have been possible back then, but it would have taken tons of time (and therefore money/dev time)... and we know that lots of game companies back then did not prioritize quality over quantity (E.T., Pac Man)

Also the processor and memory were busy running a game
@cfothough
@cfothough 3 года назад
@@Controllerhead Memory and CPU timing actually really wasn't much of an issue, as homebrew Atari 2600 games as well as demos for the platform have no problem doing plenty of things on screen while also playing advanced music like this. If anything the limitation was time constraints and little knowledge about the system's capabilities when it was new

This is a blast to listen to, except... the complete absence of a bassline during that melody at 0:15 is... extremely jarring, imo :/
@RushJet1
@RushJet1 Год назад
Yeah, it's basically have a melody playing or a baseline, pick one. I probably could have split the notes up more or something, but I might have also been running out of sound effect space in the tracker.
