The main difference between Married With Children and those other "dumb dad" shows is that no one on that show had a brain cell to share between them. The dog was the only intelligent character on the show.

Has anyone here brought up the idea that these commercials are the very reason people don't like ads and block/avoid them whenever possible? Put all the agendas and poorly-thought-out-defensive-arguments aside for once because all that stuff is ultimately just a never-ending circle of distraction. A few ads are genuinely funny the first time you see them, (if you're not trying to come up with content for a Cracked video) and so you might chuckle, or ever-so-slightly grin for a moment. But I'm pretty sure no commercial has any actual likeness to reality. Consider the people who come up with them--really think about it. They're not actually busy trying to push an agenda, at the very least not consciously, because their main focus is getting your money. They're trying to find some way to get people to nod along with the commercial and at least subconsciously think "yes, I should buy/do this thing because it aligns with things I like or believe". These are people who are desperate to advance in their given field, but also pretty arrogant because they give their audience zero credit. They are the ultimate of cynics (right behind insurance folks and anyone working in the judicial system) and hold everyone in contempt. Every single commercial and advertisement is insulting in some way. The good ones hide it well. But they are targeted toward morons, because for advertisers everyone else in the world is an idiot to be manipulated.

Oh thank goodness I'm not the only one who noticed lol The google thing is quite amazing, though. I signed up for a website that I needed for college while using google chrome, and when I checked the 'female' box while making my profile, google took note of it. After that I've gotten more ads for shoes, dresses, kitchen utensils, and house cleaning products than usual. I'm not mad, I just find it funny.
@Selrisitai
@Selrisitai 10 лет назад
What I'm wondering is-- I thought women no longer took care of houses, so why are they being targeted for kitchenware?
@winterx2348
@winterx2348 10 лет назад
AtariMaxiToriyama Women do take care of houses more than guys still. At least, where I live they do. At least they are no longer expected to, but it's a matter of whether we are smart enough to marry a man that knows how to do his own laundry/smart enough to teach our sons how to take care of themselves. You have no idea how many guys I know who always had their mother clean everything, even their own rooms, and are completely useless once they leave the nest!
@Selrisitai
@Selrisitai 10 лет назад
Winter X Oh? Where do you live? This sounds like a lovely place with feminine women.
@winterx2348
@winterx2348 10 лет назад
AtariMaxiToriyama I'm around the Seattle area, sorta in the countryside. (That probably explains it haha) Our girls here are empowered just enough that they can freely choose the lifestyle they desire, which is great, but nobody has been teaching them lifestyles outside of what they and their parents grew up with, so it is this strange mix of new and old values that kind of conflict with each other. I like to think I have a good handle on who I am and what I want for myself, but eh, I'm young and will probably make mistakes here and there like everyone else. How is it where you live?
@Selrisitai
@Selrisitai 10 лет назад
Winter X *Great, mournful sigh* What I am saying is true of 90% of women I see: Dyed hair. Too much makeup. Awful fashion sense. Following any and all trends to the exclusion of a single personal touch. The women sleep around with little concern, and in two years I have known-- three women who have had kids outside of wedlock, despite their "boyfriends" being dead-beats, or having minimum wage jobs. What's worse? Every woman has attitude. The kind of women who take one step forward, lift a finger in scolding and pan their heads back and forth like they're about to school you. They're all either obnoxious, goofy or full of attitude; but none with the intelligence to hold an intellectual conversation about anything that doesn't involve a drunken exploit or children. I think a good word to sum up the women here is "dull". All of this, and yet they think being a housewife is practically demeaning, and they have so little concept of how to raise a child that they think they would become "bored" at the house with nothing to do. Raising a child is a 24/7 job, and if you do not know that -- or if you are raising your kid, somehow, in such a way that it is NOT true -- then you have no business having a child. Oh, did I mention that they ALL want children? The only women who like me are at least sixty pounds overweight, even that I'm only fifteen pounds overweight, myself. I don't ask for the thinnest girl, but c'mon! At least be in my weight class. Anyway, I'm just now entering a job wherein I'm making a pretty decent amount of money (if I remain single or only have a girlfriend). Oh yeah, and most of the women are trailer-trash, or just trashy. Many of them look like they've been on drugs for a long time, even though they're only in their early twenties. Even the pretty girl I spot every once in a while is usually "dolled" up with makeup, or slouches (did I mention almost every girl slouches?) or sucks at walking in heels, or dresses like a slob. Or is taken. It's not like I'm seeing the girls and failing to get with them. I'm just not seeing any girls I would consider dating.

man, youtube comment sections are scary, scary places I wonder what it says about our current society that people insist on arguing about every single thing? I choose to think of it, honestly, as a sign that individual autonomy is growing - people are finding it easier and easier to espouse and express their own personal views - although an argument could be made (and probably will be) for a widespread de-maturization (not a word but I'm using it anyway) of today's internet-using population. Either way, I'll just sit on the sidelines watching and then run away when I get too frustrated. Ah, how I love the pure, unadulterated freedom of the internet~

You know what the shitty part about being a white male is? That no matter how shitty your life is or how low you are on the totem pole, people treat you like you've got some wonderful perfect life full of advantages. Like the white guy working near minimum wage flipping burgers has some great leg up on the woman who's a Senior Director of Marketing or some crap because he's the white guy and she's the woman. Because so many OTHER white guys who aren't him and don't know him from Adam have so much power and wealth. A lot of this "sexism" isn't even sexism... Guy too dumb to do simple chores? Sexism. Women hating football/beer? Sexism. Women planning weddings on a tablet? Not sexism. That's just something a bride-to-be does. They plan weddings. Woman owning a business? Definitely not sexism. The delivery man not thinking she couldn't be the boss? The character *could* be being sexist or he could just be asking a normal question, but the advertisement is certainly not sexist. All those car crash commercials? I don't see what that has to do with sexism at all. Stereotypically, women are bad drivers. If they showed a woman that couldn't parallel park and then followed up with a man doing it for her then that would be an example of sexism but these ads had nothing sexist in them at all. If any thought went into the sex of the character for these ads it was probably to chose a male to specifically *avoid* looking sexist.

Maybe we aren't actually achieving anything by bickering about whose got it worse and maybe we're all actually behind hypocritical when we bitch about our problems, then turn around and totally invalidate someone else's problems? Advertisements are set to a highly specific view point because that's really what they are going for, making people feel inadequate because they don't have that product. Its all about finding a target demographic, and categorizing them in a certain way that will make them feel like they "need" that product.
@Cheedillow
@Cheedillow 9 лет назад
Well it makes sense, men see their wives as buzzkills and women like to think their husbands are incompetent. Advertisers exploit that - AND IT WORKS
@2thinkcritically
@2thinkcritically 9 лет назад
Cheedillow You've hit the nail on the head there. Advertising works on a simple setup: 1) You have a problem. No really, you do. 2) There is a solution to that problem. 3) We have that solution. 4) You should buy it from us so you don't look at stupid as everyone else who hasn't bought it. You'll be in an elite club - the-thing-we're-selling-to-you club! So: 1) You're wife is a buzzkill. 2) We have a solution to that problem. 3) It's called beer. 4) You should buy our beer. Then you'll be in the cool-guys-who-drink-our-beer club. 1) Your toilet needs cleaning and your husband won't do it. Because he's a sexist moronic pig. No really, he'd never do any cleaning if you asked him to equally divide the chores because you're both working 40 hours a week. And why bother asking - he'd be useless at it anyway. 2) we have a solution to that problem. 3) It's called toilet wipes/bleach/a grenade. 4) You should buy it. Then you'll have less work to do and you'll make your stupid, sexist, worthless, useless husband look even more useless and worthless when you show him just how easily you cleaned the toilet after he spent countless hours trying to work out how the toilet seat works. 1) Your life is boring. 2) We have a solution to that. 3) It's called discount vouchers. 4) You should sign up to our website, then you too can get your legs waxed, try sushi, parachute from an aeroplane and get a fantastic discount on your wedding venue. Or the TL;DR version: Buy our stuff and feel superior to everyone else.

Yes. Once you take away the assertions of privilege placed on men by feminist and SJW groups, and look at pure statistic without thought terminating cliche, you will find that men are actually disadvantaged in a good many ways. *Prime Example:* Feminists can him and haw about female genital mutilation in a third world country on the other side of the planet, acting as if it is validation for their positions and assertions, when we live in a society where roughly 206 male genitals are mutilated every minute. (U.S. Statistic, might be different in other parts) and we think it's natural and normal.
@aratakitheoneandoniitto
@aratakitheoneandoniitto 8 лет назад
I'm not trying to invalidate your argument by saying it could be much worse, but the fact you are trying to compare the two as being equally damaging to the parties is a bit silly. I agree with you, I don't think circumcision should be allowed to be decided for children against their will. It's wrong to decide for your child to alter their body, but the reason people pay more attention to female genital mutilation even though the numbers are smaller is because the way they are done in these countries, as opposed to the way its done in America, is physically harmful and can kill some of these people. It's not /just/ because they're women. If circumcision was causing men in America unbearable physical pain and killing them, I'm sure it would get just as much attention, but the fact of the matter it's more of a cosmetic procedure than anything. It's like piercing your kids ears as a baby or giving them a tattoo, It's wrong and shouldn't be allowed, but its not a health crisis.
@chrisp187
@chrisp187 8 лет назад
+Mista Gibbs It not like a piercing. Both circumcision are done to remove the pleasure of sex from both genders. Both are completely unnecessary. Both circumcisions can lead to medical problems down the road and can cause deadly infections when performed in places where proper medical procedure are not followed. There are accounts of boys dying from infection, having the penis remove due to a botch procedure, pain during erection because too much skin was cut off, and baby boys contracting HIV/STDs from a mohel. Not to mention that the penis and foreskin are attached at birth. Much like your nail is attached to the soft delicate skin beneath your nail. essentially its like ripping a nail off a finger. Only on a place that has thousand of nerves more. Question: if female circumcision were done in a sterile medical facility and there was some evidence for medical benefit. Do you think western society would think of it ok?

the most sexist commercial I have ever seen is the "Allstate safe driving bonus check" commercial. the woman states "If men are better drivers than women, then why do I have this 'safe driving bonus check' from Allstate?" the guys opens his mouth to reply, "Silence!" she says. WTF!? I mean firstly, even counting statistics where men are better drivers, ONE woman who drives safe is not grounds for all women driving safe Is she implying ones' actions should be accountable across an entire demographic? Secondly, the statistics she refers to are huge. If true, then she would be of the smaller percentage of good women drivers, there are bad women drivers too, don't freak out now. lastly, I'm not sexist, I know there are more women than I can count who can drive better than me. Just because a woman can do something does not mean all women can, just because a man can do something does not mean all men can.

Since I apparently have no fucking life, here goes… Beer: Yeah, okay, these adverts are dumb. This is not why I'm here. Oh, wait, "Man, guys have completely lost their fucking minds, haven't they?" No. These are advertisements made by advertising companies, not magic windows into the collective male psyche. Dove: The placebo effect is a well documented phenomenon and "falling for it" (in some cases people actually recover faster from illness just from the illusion of placebo medicine helping; the power of positive thinking, eh?) doesn't make you dumb. "… women's problems are all in their heads?", when their problem is body dysmorphia, yes, yes it is in their heads. Computers (for her [sic]) - Buying shoes, dancing, going on dates and getting married are all things that many women do. Targeting their ads at the 100 or so female particle physicists in the country might not lead to a huge spike in sales. Plus, it's a fucking tickle-me-PC designed for simple people and folks who already have a computer but want an expensive toy to sit on the couch with. What do you expect her to be doing with it? Calibrating sensitive lab equipment? Maybe the UPS guy doesn't think she is the manager (yes, manager, who the fuck refers to them as "The Boss" aside from some tool trying to establish their own nickname) because she is just standing there behind the counter waiting like a part-time barista. SSD: Yes I too am shocked at the fact that the housewife who barely uses a computer doesn't know what an SSD drive is and the other two do. Housewives are notorious for their tech knowledge, systems analysts from around the world travel thousands of miles to consult the wisdom of the American housewife. All three characters are stupid and fucking weird looking. NEXT. Feminist Bullshit: Does it matter what the adverts are for? Apparently this is just a platform for feminist propaganda. I personally don't give a shit about advertising but you're being a massive hypocrite by first complaining about women being, "made to think they're crazy", or "given a placebo" as normal people would call it; yet when men are depicted as bumbling retards you choose to go off on an unrelated rant about how privileged men are and hold up a picture of a few dozen portraits of white men who have been dead for centuries. What the fuck does this have to do with anything?

DriscolDevil there have been cases of even knowing its a placebo still has a beneficial effect from going through the motions of using something. Showing someone falling for a placibo isnt an insult. Also, picking not overweight and not disfigured people may well be intentional but a placebo will be less beneficial to those people who would be more likely to hace much deeper psychological issues about their appearance that a placebo wont negate. If you go looking for things to be offended by in anything, you will find things. Well done

DriscolDevil I never said she knew it was a placebo I said placebos can work even if the person knows they are a placebo to make my point that 'falling' for a placebo isnt an insult. So you are trying to say its a stereotype, in what way? the being emotional? are you trying to say no women would react that way when told they felt more confident in themself when their appearance didnt change? Most would feel emotion from that experience. Would you rather they did the advert and have the women say 'what the fuck ever, I dont care'? And so can no advert show a woman crying, because you think its a 'stereotype'? If you start using that word for things people actualy do then you've made it lose all meaning

Dove ads are nothing but hypocritical bullshit hidden under some PSA front about self-confidence. They just want to appeal to women that are disgusted by typical beauty products, while they (Dove) are nothing but a branch of the company they pretend to criticize. +hihkable I think Jeremy's point was that you will often see a commercial where a white guy is doing something in a goofy/nerdy, incompetent way, then the camera will pan over and you see a black guy staring at the white guy like the white guy is an idiot, then proceeds to do the same task, but in a normal, competent manner. Or some variation thereof. So, the point is that, in advertisements, it's okay to make fun of white people but it would not be okay to make fun of black people. Not really having anything to do with who gets more acting jobs.

+Paul Vanukoff I don't want this to turn into like some adverserial hostile arguement, so pls don't take my disagreeing with u as an insult. But I can't think of an example of the situation of which u described, with the white idiot and black guy who disapproves(I'm sure it has happened but clearly not enough for me to be able to remember one). Yeah, lots of parts of dumb ppl in commercials are white, but I just think that's cause there are overall more white actors who consistantly get work.

Oh my god. The point of the Dove ad wasn't to insult women. It was to show them that beauty and confidence is in the mind, not the body. It's called placebo, DOB. I am disappointed.

Oh my god. The point of the Cracked video wasn't to point actual stereotypes or critique. It's called comedy. I am disappointed.
@Timewarpiaman
@Timewarpiaman 10 лет назад
And they did this through implying that women are dumb enough to buy that a patch on their arm can give them confidence and beauty. The reason the placebo effect works is because there's a chance it might actually work again how dumb do you need to be to think you can become more beautiful via stickers?

I never take anything made by dove seriously. All their feminist feel good about yourself bullshit gets really annoying. And that "like a girl" ad gets to me the most. I mean it's just so freaking biased. I highly doubt that everyone they filmed acted like that. There must have been at least some manipulation involved. I mean if someone told me to pretend to fight like a girl I would definitely stop and ask them what they meant. I am a girl so I just don't ever even consider that stereotype of girls being lame and weak at fighting because it's so obviously untrue. I find it hard to believe that none of their subjects questioned this and just automatically went for the stereotype. It's just so unrealistic.

I recognize placebo as a real and at times difficult to overcome affect. It is generally though, a sign of ignorance. The "beauty patch" SOUNDS like a cootie shot. That shit is still going on.

My mom is a bit of an outlier so she actually does. However she fits nearly all of the stereotypes and she's an outlier. Most stereotypes about women are true. You can't say the same for male stereotypes because men vary a lot more than women.

+zomby GI I have only ever seen MRA's talking about equal paternal rights, suicide and abuse recognition and outreach, right to fair treatment in court and to not be withheld from things like jobs due to affirmative action. I don't think I've ever seen the Monstrous Misogynist MRA that people always tell me MRAs are. They seem like men hurt by a system that everyone claims benefits them and "privileges" them. Except when you have a high suicide rate, work place death and injury rate, ~63% harsher law penalties and are shouted down, ridiculed and mocked for trying to seek help or shelter for your abuse(physical, mental or otherwise)... Those privileges don't seem so apparent.

I've now watched four Cracked videos. No more for me, I'm afraid. The reason is that all of them have featured a hyper-excited narrator being oh-so-self-consciously smug about the hidden meanings and agendas built into whatever it is they are commenting on. I've seen enough of the world now to know that when a person says something, sometimes it's nothing more than a person saying that something. (Gasp! Shock! Horror!) I'll pause a moment to let you get over that epiphany............OK? Ready? Sometimes, I find it easier to take things at face value. There isn't always a hidden agenda, bent on suppressing or repressing someone or a group or an idea, in the hope of impressing some other one. Enough with the pseudo-intellectual edginess that seems to be par for the course with these types of videos. Yeesh![OK, cue the social critics who will look at my message here and make judgements about me, my person, my leanings, my outlook, and even my validity as a human being. I fully expect someone to pick up on certain words and phrases and attempt a forensic analysis. They'll look at things like my use of grammar and vocabulary, and draw from that a conclusion that I am most likely well-educated. (Actually, I put in the "most-likely" there - they'll say I AM well-educated, which naturally means that I am rich, and therefore a bad person.)They'll probably look at my use of "par for the course" and determine that, because I used a golf analogy, I must be (statistically anyway) a white man of a certain age, who is conservative, fairly well-off, a professional in middle to senior management, and so on. Again, therefore, I am no doubt racist, sexist, and probably actively misogynist as well.I may be some, all or none of these things, but there will be some who will state categorically that I am.Now the argument for the golf analogy kind of falls flat. If you call me out for it, it proves that you also know it is a golfing term, and so all of those things you ascribe to me must also be true for you. It is the same logic, right?I'd actually say it is more telling that I can use a word like analogy correctly to show some of those things about education, etc., but I won't go into it.OK, I apologise for my diatribe about smug social commentators - especially when I've just done a similar thing myself. It seems to be contagious. But I hope you understood my point.Have a good one.Bystander]

Interested Bystander There’s something you’re missing here. You clearly think that there is some kind of higher knowledge to gain from this, and I don’t recall a single moment in the intro, title, or... Oh, look, they actually never mentioned that they would ascend you to a higher level than you already were. The beauty of the internet is that you can browse shit and not expect to gain anything from it, remain ignorant, and then rant to random people that you won’t watch these videos you chose to dissect for face value. I think that Cracked brings us a humorous, alternate perspective on things that we’ve perhaps seen before. That’s my darling opinion. And I think you’ve done a damn fine job dismantling yourself mid- rant. I actually learned something about golf. Wow. I feel so important. It’s almost as if I’ll never use that knowledge in my life because I won’t play fucking golf. But thank you so much for giving us a detailed background into your life that we never asked for. See? If I make your point feel invalidated, it doesn’t help anyone. Predicting the people that will dissect your argument also doesn’t help your case. I suggest you delete this comment and maybe invest in some courses that will teach you a good bit about the social sciences you’re critiquing. And if you’re unable to, well, that just makes you as uneducated as Cracked. Which I watch literally to poke fun at these little quirks in life I seemed to have missed. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking for me to watch. I wish you best of luck finding other videos to fill that deep, dark hole in your heart that leaves you unsatisfied by life’s greatest epiphanies; that people say things for the hell of it sometimes. You will be one of the greatest philosophers of our time. Congrats

one thing you're forgetting when it comes to the idiot househusband trope used in commercials however is that those commercials are targeted at women, it's what they want to see, it doesn't matter who creates the commercial. also MRA's are not saying men have it worse than women, we're saying we have issues too that need to be adressed, issues that in many instances are more pressing than the bullshit feminists complain about in today's world. oh no i've just been micro-aggressed, well that's too bad when men are statistically about 4 times more likely to suffer actual aggression.
