I love my Buff Orphingtons. They are the sweetest hens. Previously I had Rhode Island Reds and Bard Rock. Both were great layers, never went broody. They were not friendly. My Buffs are so sweet. Recently I was working in the garden. They are only six weeks old. I saw something out of the corner of my eye and there she was. She had escaped her temporary coop/brooder and came and found me. I held out my hands and she came right to me. When I picked her up, she snuggled in and I’m not kidding it sounded like she was purring. I’m in love with this breed. Even my Buff Rooster is sweet. You can hold him and he is kind. No worries about being chased by this breed.
I have one silkie. She is continually broody a majority of the year! I also have Speckled Sussex among quite a few other breeds. I have to say for a perfect duel purpose,great laying, broody hen Australorp is one of my top picks. They will get the job done! Especially with the addition of a Australorp Roo. They will keep you with a consistent sustainable flock. Not to mention the beautiful black,blue, and splash varieties you can experiment and breed for
We got our first flock this spring and I ordered Orpingtons and some australorps so eventually I would have a broody momma to hatch some babies for me. Well surprise to us, one of our Copper Marans went broody late this summer and has been the best momma bird! We were so shocked. It’s been cool to see. We let her sit on 2 eggs but only one developed all of the way. We now have a beautiful young lady added to our flock that is a Blue Australorp and Americana mix. We won’t breed her but her coloring is so beautiful!
Sorry about that. I don’t have each of the breeds in my own flock and so I didn’t have personal pictures to show. But thank you for sharing the suggestion. In future videos I’ll always try to show pictures or clips when I can.
