Hi Dr. Childs, It’s so great of you to provide these videos. So, I feel like I go from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid because I go between symptoms of high heart rate to low heart rate, low temperature to normal, from palpitations to not, from hair loss to not, from energy and sleeplessness to low energy and heavy fatigue. I don’t have weight loss, ever 😂 so unfair! 😉 My labs have shown low TSH, and a couple of times doctors told me I was hyperthyroid but others have said it’s normal. I’ve had naturopathic doctors, so they have done all of the tests you recommended. But, none of them mentioned what you have said here. I have had high blood pressure since I was a teenager, so for 45 years. It’s genetics, and I’ve been on blood pressure medicine for about 35 years. Additionally, I have a spinal deformity called Bertolotti Syndrome which leaves me in chronic pain. So I’ve done everything possible for my health with diet, supplements, hormones, and exercise, yet I’ve still dealt with chronic pain, blood pressure issues, and thyroid issues. So, thank you 🙏🏻 so much for this video. You’ve finally answered a long time health mystery for me. I think I’ve been struggling with the sick thyroid syndrome. I’ve found that if I don’t get enough sleep or if I’m under a lot of extra stress my symptoms of hyperthyroid get really bad without the weight loss or diarrhea . Then if I get rest, am able to reduce my stress, things seem to calm down. Thanks 🙏🏻

I was hoping you would cover toxic multi nodular goiter as a cause of hyperthyroidism or subclinical hyperthyroidism. I have had symptoms of hyperthyroidism for years, but not sever symptoms. My TSH level is now 0.2 so I saw an endocrinologist who took more tests including a ultrasound and this led to my diagnosis. Was told I may be on meds for life. I just started the meds so cannot say I feel better yet.

I'm the same and now my son is also TSH suppressed 0.02 normal T4 T3. I had a ultrasound and found nodules and osteopenia, Went on Carbimazole and horrible side effects. I then found a study on L-carnitine used for a thyroid storm. I am still subclinical low TSH but I take L- carnitine and no Carbimazole and I feel fine.

I asked my endo to order the T3, T4, reverse T3, TSH, and TPO(?). All the tests except the TSH came back normal or near normal but the TSH came back at .09 in March. I had another T3 and TSH in early June and the T3 was normal but the TSH lowered to .03. Even though I’m told it makes no difference I always test on an empty stomach after no food or drink for at least 6 hours. He lowered my meds from 175 mcg to 150 mcg and I’ll see him again in September. Before that I’m scheduled to see my oncologist ENT because of swallowing problems. I also have had no gallbladder for over 40 years. I’m so tired of all this.

I've had a very low TSH before I was on medication, with below normal free t3 and very low free t4. My family doctor didn't even want to prescribe medication for me! I told him he was nuts. I was depressed at the time and gaining weight, even though I ate like a bird. I am now seeing an endocrinologist, and she only looks at my TSH; when my blood levels were in mid range of free t3 and free t4, my TSH was suppressed, so she keeps lowering my medication!!! I take an antipsychotic called seroquel to sleep and I think that might suppress my TSH; she won't even listen to me. I have no symptoms of hyperthyroidism on that dose that I take; it helped my depression, and I even lost a pound or two. I'm getting referred to another endo, and will ask for a reverse T3 test. Thanks for the video.

I realize that it is now a year later than the first comments but still I have a go at asking this question. The short question is, if thyroid medication isn't being absorbed properly, be it synthetic or dessicated thyroid, would one expect to see very low TSH levels? For years my Free T3 and Free T4 have been sub-optimal and my TSH is far beneath the low normal levels. Today I was told by an endrocrinologist that the dosage of Cytomel and Levothyroxine were quite high but the Free T3, in particular is still well below mid-normal range. He was wondering about malabsorption but we didn't discuss what the effect on the TSH would be if that were the case. I wouldn't have thought the TSH was staying low if the body were not receiving therapeutic doses of thyroid hormones. Thank you.

My 16 yr old son has been having symptoms for abt 2 years. Hand tremors. Bouts of diarrhea. Insomnia. Anxiety and stress. Exhaustion. Migraines with a normal mri scan. And absolutely cannot gain weight. This was my first concern. He’s abt 5’9” and around 97-100#s. He also has heat and exercise intolerance. All of these symptoms have slowly built up of the past two years. After spending 9 months going through a pediatric gi clinic with all normal results. I asked again for an endo referral. Once there She found low tsh of .168 and normal free t4 at 1.25. Our next appt is coming up and I hope she will run more tests to find out what is causing his low tsh. His primary Dr diagnosed him with subclinical hyperthyroid based on these tests but his endo may want more tests before making a diagnosis. He is miserable with his symptoms. Your video explained the differences btw the lab results so well I feel a bit more educated going into his next appt. Any advice when a patient is this age? Most information I’ve found is mostly centered around adults. Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you.

Sadly I have not been to my doctor for a follow up on my “wait and watch”. My eye brows are shortened and have hair loss. The absolute worst in the utter exhaustion I experience. I’m not able to do anything normal. More frustrating is I can’t get any doctor to do more in-depth tests. I don’t know what to do now. I’ve struggled with this for over 22 years and I’m at the end of my rope.😢

Hi doctor, so I have had hypothyroidism for over a decade. Recently I started experiencing classical hypothyroidism symptoms such as constipation, dry skin, and exhaustion. However my labs reveal a low TSH of 0.021 and a high T4 of 1.77 which seems to indicate "hyperthyroidism." Should I request a full thyroid panel, get my levothyroxine upped, and see an endocrinologist to determine what type of hypothyroidism I have? Thank you!!

Interesting. I was part of a research study for rTMS and the instrument was placed on the back of my head. It messed with my hormones from one day to the next. My neurologist said he isn't surprised as it went straight through the pituitary gland. Now I believe that's why I have low TSH. Thanks for the video.

Thanks so much for your videos. They are very informative. HX - I have adrenal insufficiency, yet a year into diagnosis I still have no idea whether I have primary Addison’s or central adrenal insufficiency. I failed the stim test. Almost undetectable ACTH and told my adrenal glands are very sluggish as they barely responded during the testing. My TSH has been borderline low for some time, and most recently is low. I have symptoms of hypothyroidism. I have many nodules on my thyroid, hence a large goiter for past 2.5 years. I am hoping to get to the bottom of things. I have yet to get an MRI to assess for potential pituitary tumor. I have asked a few times and now will be demanding one.

@@user-ly6nu2mc8m I truly feel your pain. My comment above was two years ago, and unfortunately I was not able to continue on Cytomel. Similar to you, I had too many side effects from it. However, I have recently moved on to start treating what I believe to be the root cause of my autoimmune thyroid illness.. I got mold exposure from a home that I lived in way too long. (I did not have thyroid problems at all until I moved into that house). I've had significant digestive imbalance stemming from the mold exposure.. and I'm beginning to treat that with herbal extracts and supplements, specifically pomegranate husk extract, clove, oregano, chlorella, and undecylenic acid, and probiotics/prebiotics. I have come to firmly believe that our immune systems don't just wake up one day and randomly start attacking our thyroids, joints, skin, hair, etc. for no reason. There has to be some trigger that provokes the immune system to react this way. It's designed by God to protect us, not destroy us. (By the way, I've learned that supposedly about 70% of the immune system is contained in the gastrointestinal tract. Which may be one reason why so many of us have autoimmunity these days.) Anyway, when we can trace back and discover the "provoking" thing, then we can deal with the root and oftentimes reverse the autoimmunity. I'm not saying that I will ever be able to stop all supplements once I am in remission, but hey.. I'd ten times rather maintain and feel really good by taking a few herbs or supplemental nutrients (along with a healthy diet) than feel completely lousy on pharmaceuticals! @user-ly6nu2mc8m, I pray you will be able to find out the root cause for your thyroid problem and a solution that brings you back to thriving health again!! 🙏

I will look forward to understanding this topic better so my T3 levels can be managed by symptoms and of course levels. My T3 was the only medication that has decreased my depression. I have started eating better and exercising. Little by little towards management of the depression fatigue.

I got this turned around in my head even though I was a practicing RN for 20 years. I have been feeling so terrible but I also have Fibromyalgia with arthritis and back problems as well as Major Depression. I have been so weak and exhausted and I thought it was from getting close to being officially menopausal with LMP 8 months ago. I don’t sleep because I go through hot and cold cycles all day and night and with any activity my face is bright red with water running off of me and just a general feeling of illness. I’m short of breath and get really anxious with feeling of heart racing but I was actually gaining weight all winter and was getting disgusted with myself for not being able to lose it but I was eating huge amounts of yogurt with berries and granola which I stopped doing about 3 weeks ago. I have been having digestive problems even though my gallbladder was removed over a year ago. I was at the doctor 3 weeks ago for this reason wondering if I have a bile duct problem because I’m always full of gas and bloated with alternating constipation or diarrhea with no understanding why it’s one way or the other. I also had elevated liver enzymes but they are normal again now. I had a spell on Wednesday where I hadn’t ate all day because my appetite just kind of went away because I figured it was my depression getting out of control again so I have been having to force myself to eat. I made myself some pancakes and within 30 minutes I had severe gas and bloating with abdominal pain that had me doubled over. I thought I was going to pass out from my heart feeling funny when trying to go to the bathroom. I kept going from the toilet to the bed because I couldn’t tolerate sitting up and trying to pass the pressure in my stomach and it wouldn’t come out at first even though it felt like it was right there. I had to really calm myself down and try to slow my breathing down and just lay quietly on my side until finally I got up and was able to pass loose stool. This finally relieved the abdominal pain. I was supposed to drive 2 hours away the next day to see the GI Specialist but just felt so rotten from the night before that I cancelled and went back to my home doctor on Friday. I got there and just from getting in the shower and going there, I was exhausted and was short of breath. My BP was 160/100 while laying down with a heart rate of 112. He had my TSH, & Free T4 drawn as well as tests for Celiac and B vitamin deficiencies. The TSH came back on Saturday 0.29 with a Free T4 of 0.9 which is on the lower end of normal. The lab will hold the blood for 5 days so I’m sure my doctor will come in on Monday, see my labs, and go ahead and order the T3. I was wondering why my BP is so high when I thought I was having Hypothyroidism but it looks like I’m actually Hyper which makes more sense with my symptoms. I just feel weak and generally unwell with severe activity intolerance and numbness in my feet & hands yet my upper body gets so hot that I can’t just get unbearably hot when I try to do anything. When this is all happening at the same time as my period stopped how was I to know what is causing what? I’m going to be 51 next month so I’m at the age for Menopause. I have just been feeling like shit for months already and just wondering what is wrong with me why I have absolutely no energy to want to do anything. It looks like now that I stopped eating so much yogurt, I have actually lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks which I’m not upset with at all because I was putting on weight especially in my abdomen and have been feeling so fat and old and depressed but maybe there’s more going on and it’s not all my fault for being unable to snap out of it. When you already have chronic pain with many weird symptoms it’s confusing on what’s actually going on inside your own body and then throw in loss of Estrogen and I don’t know if I’m coming or going anymore.

HELP ~ TOTALLY CONFUSED ~ I've been diagnosed as Hypothyroidism since 1988 and on levothyroxine.... Both my T3 Free and T4 Free have always been in the NORMAL range.... But my TSH levels are all over the place... As an example it can be ( Low ) at 0.314 and six months later ( High ) as 5.051.... Then back to Low..... I've been on .88 mcg for years... Upon my last physical my body temp is normal - blood pressure was 108/62 - still have difficult stools but not constipated per say... But this lab test was Low again ( 0.238 ) and he just lowered me to 75 mcg... I am now tired all the time where I wasn't before... Achy while I felt good on the .88 mcg... Never had much of a appetite... and Not sure what I'm doing wrong or what i should tell Dr to check for...

Last TPO less than 8, last RT3 was 11.3. Also osteoporosis -3.2 in hip! Symptoms: Hair loss, Weight loss, Fatigue, Swollen tongue (went to ER last night). Thank you in advance x0x0

Hi, Im here because of my low TSH, but I am wondering if we know anything about the effects of iodine supplements. For maybe 15 years I've been taking as much as 55mg/day because I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Post Covid I've had a ton of health issues so i stopped taking it altogether, but now am wondering if that was a mistake. I hate guessing with this!

My PCP said I’m very low he wants to increase my dose to 90 mg. But that doesn’t seem right. Seeing an Endo in 5 days but not sure what to do in the meantime. Stop or still take the NP thyroid 60 mg? Stop or still take your thyroid kit? I want to calm what’s happening in my body right now and between the time I see the specialist.

Not necessarily, it depends on the length and depth of the suppression.

I have very strange issues with my thyroid. I started with painful nodules appearing with symptoms of hyperthyroidism. A drop In tsh to around 0.95 to 1 then T4 is raised. However it's not extremely high but I'm very symptomatic. So It took some convincing my doctor to investigate and unfortunately it's took me 4 months of suffering before getting a referral to an endocrinologist. I'm on beta blockers for the heart palpitations the insomnia is awful and the anxiety. Some days though my symptoms are worse than others.

I am having hyperthyroid symptoms for almost 6 years, however, my TSH will always come back low but still under the normal range (with normal T3/T4). Therefore I was never offered treatment. However, recently TSH finally went below standard range (in fact undetectable ), and also T3 was high and I was referred to an endocrinologist. She said she will like to do another test just before prescribing any medication. She also did the autoimmune test for Graves. And both of the tests again came back normal. This is very confusing. Why TSH will go in and out of standard range. My symptoms however never went away and perhaps have gotten worse with time.
