I developed graves after my 3rd baby. My doctor was going to put me on an anti anxiety meds but my naturopath along with another MD got me on some good thyroid and adrenal supplements. I also had to take a good look inward and realize that I needed to start caring for myself better and resting way more! And not OVERLOOK myself. And eating healthier. It took a few months to start getting better . There is hope!

From my understanding, a procedure (eg RAI) does not cure Grave's Disease. Grave's disease is an autoimmune disease. I don't think this is clear to many... including doctors or endocrinologist who do not often address the Grave's Disease. RAI treats the attack on the thyroid but the underlying illness is still there. This is why so many Grave's Disease patients still have so many issues including anxiety, fatigue, etc even after 'treatment'.
Just subscribed to you. I got diagnosed with Graves two years ago. I'm pretty miserable but see my endocrinologist every six months. I'm hot allll the time, anxious, tired etc...I workout but I'm gaining weight. I should mention I had a full hysterectomy in 2023. Anyway, I am working to improve my diet and nutrition. My next appointment is in August. I just want to feel better. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Greetings from Dallas, Texas.
Thank you for this amazing information and actually explaining how things work. I’ve been seeing an endocrinologist who straight out told me diet doesn’t matter when it comes to Graves’ disease….. I on the other hand believe other wise and have done so much research on the topic and that’s how I found you. Continue to share awesome helpful information we truly appreciate it.
@user-eg9kf6wq2dI know it isn't who you were looking to for an answer, but I would assume that kefir is off the table at least for the first 6-12 months as it is usually cow's milk based. I have seen some that are made with oat milk instead, but again, if you are having a lot of issues it is probably best to avoid even certified gluten free oats for some time as many grains and cereals tend to aggravate Graves. I hope I was able to help.
My dear!!! You are amazing with the knowledge you have of the thyroid gland! It’s as if you yourself has a thyroid disorder or you SERIOUSLY listen to your patients symptoms. I have to thank you for reaching out to people who are suffering, trying to figure out how to cope with their thyroid problems! I’m finally learning how to live in a slower mode of hypothyroidism from being hyperthyroidism my whole life which almost killed me with a heartbeat of 298!! I was on Tapazol for a year and a half to see if the thyroid would regulate itself but didn’t so RAI was my only help putting me in hypothyroidism. That was 15 years ago and I still struggle with the slow down of my body! 😂 I don’t like it but it has to be that way. I’ve learned you have to go with the flow of things! Peace to us all suffering with this disorder!…Ra

@@drwestinchilds also my son my daughter has both Hashimoto’s and also grieves how do I lower those antibodies should she take herbs like the ones lemon balm etc. I would those do more damage should I let her body see if it’s going to come out of that state, we’re afraid of using methimazole because of the side effects and it seems pretty nasty so we’re trying diet but she’s giving up gluten for the most part and we’re trying to get rid of dairy. I know dairy has iodine as well which could be potentially damaging with hyper thyroid. This is just spent so overwhelming and I’m not sure how to help her if anybody on this page of the doctor can’t reply himself if anybody can help me like hi what can I do? Can she take those herbs safely lemon balm, bugleweed.
I am soo impressed with this. I had to look into this for my daughter in 2019 and there was NO information for food and graves at the time. After six blood tests showing she was progressively getting worse they said she won’t be able to live without Methimazole. I was already following Dr Ken Berry, other doctors, RNs and MANY other people with thyroid and insulin related conditions and so many auto-immune diseases. I asked my daughter if she wanted to try a strict diet removing all of the things you mention. Suddenly, her next labs from 2022-2022 have all come back negative for Graves’. She will always have Graves’ but she isn’t suffering or risking her liver or kidneys or needing to be on a ‘close watch’ as they say for patients taking Methimazole. I didn’t want the radiation. The surgery/removal. Or the medication with it’s side-effects. Ill tell ya.. There’s minimal help out there because even in the medical community the thyroid is still a ‘mystery’ and there’s so much fear. I found a thousand zillion videos on Hashimotos but not Graves.’
Can you tell me more about the diet. I am going on over a year after anti-thyroid medication. I am off of that, but I haven't been watching my diet at all. My doctor told me and many others that diet doesn't matter. I am so desperate to stop having the racing heart and panic attacks that I am really considering RAI or surgery. I do understand those come with risks. I am just so tired and also under a severe amount of stress. I know that is making it a lot worse. Before I do a life threatening surgery or radioactive pill, I need to try this. Giving up caffeine, alcohol gluten and cleaning out my cabinets I need to try to do this. the medication isn't too bad it made me really really tired at times btw. I wish you both the best of luck.

My daughter had Graves in her high school junior year. The doc told her she will lose her thyroid completely in 2years 😢 But, I dealt with it using Chinese herbal medicine that is specially prescribed to her. Her symptoms are going away and the tests are coming back normal. Her fast heart rate is normal and her angry mood is much better. Of course, she still will have her bad mood days once a month . I also restricted her diet. It is more about the method of cooking that I found was giving her trouble than the food. So... She is not eating fried food, BBQ food, spicy food... The diet seems working😂😂😂 But, We have to be very strict about what she eats, especially about eating out. Hope this will help and you will get better. It is all a matter of getting your diet in control.
If you haven’t removed later on, you can get cancer and they tell you that won’t happen, but look it up!!!! better to do the medicine even his medicines, high risk and yes, die, it did work in my case and reversed it thank God

@@charlesmurray3255 Yes, I have noticed great improvement as soon as I removed gluten or dairy. But I suspect alcohol is especially harmful. I was drinking just one beer or one cocktail, and I could feel my heart rate increase dramatically. So no drinks is better. Of course I'm taking medication, but I have noticed even with medication I feel horrible if I don't follow a healthy lifestyle. If we have this condition we have to be extra careful.
I figured out what my best heart rate was in order to get my best TSH levels. Now, I keep a blood pressure cuff that has a heartbeat and an A Fib detector on it. If my heart rate starts getting too high for too many days, I know I need to go to the doctor. And, that way I don’t get out of control. The longer you’re out of control the harder it is to get back to normal and becomes difficult. Know what your best heart rate is when your TSH is normal And keep it there.
Hello! Thanks so much for the helpful information you post for all of us with thyroid conditions. How would these foods to avoid apply to me as someone who has only had a subtotal thyroidectomy (over 20 years ago)? I am already gluten free and it has made a huge difference but unsure if these other foods to avoid would apply to me. Many thanks again for your help!
Doctors never mention diet. They don’t get trained on nutrition that’s why I avoid goin to the doctor unless I really have to. I prefer naturopaths. Natural healing is always better than pharmaceuticals.
Wonder why people with thyroid issues have thyroid issues, cause they eat their aggressors everyday. People like you who think that they cant change and dont, end up under the knife, with less organs afterwards and drinking pills for the rest of their lives. Just because of stubbornness.
I cant give up coffee, wine, bread and cheese! Those are all the things I love! I dont eat much sugar and I dont drink milk. Hello... I am also a disabled veteran and I've had Graves for probably 13 yrs now. I think stress is something that makes everything worse. Self care really helps along with many herbs, work out plan, God word, and eating well has kept me from having many of the symptoms of Graves.
I would say get your vitamin deficiency figured out that’s gonna cause big problems. Why do you have to take vitamins or something that are gluten-free try to get everything through your diet without vitamins I know it’s hard to do but maybe make shakes with the greens and things in it will make you feel so much better.!!! Put us most nutrients as possible and shakes and drink it every day!! Meditate get your stress level down. It’s a must with Graves. It’s autoimmune anything that’s going to bring your cortisol ups, gonna make autoimmune worse. Meditate and definitely work out even if it’s just walking with a weighted vest.!!! Graves attacks, the muscles of the body and the bones so you can have bone loss
I had my thyroid taken out 4 yrs ago & my labs still show active for Graves Disease & Hashimotos. I'm soo lost and my Endocrinologist isnt very helpful on what to eat to feel better or lose weight. I thought this video would be helpful but you stated in the first 2 minutes that someone who no longer has a thyroid, no longer has Graves Disease. What??? Can you please explain why I still have Graves Disease/Graves Eye Disease? Thank you.
i have hyperthyroid nd i knw wht you are tolking about. i have been looking online fr long but trust havnt found any solution for hyper side. but yes whn i asked my endicrynolgyst to remove my gland he mentioned tht it wont help cuse some the part which we leav inside body gets active. so he hs decided to give me radioactive iodine. you might also think of this option. i m gona get them in a month. lets see hw it goes
You still have it because auto immune is for life. You can put it on remission, but removing the target doesn't solve the root cause. You have to find out why your antibodies are still high. Mycotoxins/mold from foods was my issue. Non organic coffee, nuts, grains especially corn can be loaded with ochratoxin a.
The autoimmune dysfunction may remain but once the thyroid has been removed the target of the immune attack is also gone which usually results in reduced thyroid antibodies. Some people consider this "curative" even though the underlying immune dysfunction remains. Graves' eye disease is different from the hyperthyroid state, even though they can come together. Once your thyroid has been removed you are functionally hypothyroid, not hyperthyroid. These are important points that trip up many patients with Graves' disease but they are very important to understand.
@@funlearnjoy4418 nonono dont take the radioactive iodine it will be the worst mistake you do. I speak from experience and now my body is at its worst also my body hates t4 and only works well with t3. I have been given the highest dose of t4 then the lowest still felt like I had water in my lungs, swollen body due to water retention i refused to take t4 and went on t3 only lost the water weight and could climb a steep hill without gasping for breath. I have the same problem. Total Thyroidectomy 3 years ago and I still have Graves. My TSI test shows I still have Graves. My body is attacking itself and I am so tired. I don't know what to do. 😢 And yes, I said TSI which shows that you have Graves. I'm miserable.
I have Graves’ disease I had to cut out caffeine because I was having so many ventricular ectopics it was like 12 percent of my heart beats I’m now on medication for it bisoprolol. Interesting my thyroid levels have gone back to normal atm and my medicine is being reduced to 5mg carbimazol daily my thyroid specialist said the treatment is for a year and a half. I guess after that I will come of my medicine if my levels still behave she did mention the word remission but am I just medically induced remission at the moment ? Because my body may not know how to do it without the medicine. I thought graves is autoimmune and can never be cured. So is remission like a dormant volcano which could come back in the future ? I will try to follow this advice with next gluten removal I think as next easiest step. I tried histamine intolerance diet and it was ok all just mostly fresh foods but I love tomatoes lol 😂 my doctor said to try it before my diagnosed ventricular ectopics. It all started all of this after I got covid in 2020, I’m 29 female from 🇬🇧 uk
I have active Graves’ and a very healthy diet. My diet before I was diagnosed was pretty much in line with what you have shared. Dairy is one thing that does not seem to be an issue, however. I don’t drink milk but I do love Greek yogurt and cheese. Would you recommend giving it up even if there’s no reaction? I’m going to run out of enjoyable food 😢. TIA.
I didn’t give up dairy at all, but I gave up gluten my doctor tested me to, and said I had a sensitivity to gluten but there’s a doctor says get rid of gluten and helps calm down thyroid issues and it worked other doctor say the dairy and gluten together, but I didn’t do it only the gluten
I also have Graves - and did not notice any impact with dairy. I make sure that the dairy that I do consume is full fat, local when possible, and the highest quality (as far as I can tell lol). The majority of cheese I eat is from grass fed animals. I think some of us have that dairy sensitivity and some do not. As far as ice cream - I make my own so I know exactly what is in it.
@@BridgetStuartThank-you so much for this reply. I think while I am getting my skin back to normal I will continue to avoid dairy, but your response gives me hope that I will be able to enjoy cheese, yoghurt, and icecream again one day. ❤
Will you be doing a podcast for those who have had their thyroid removed with RAI.. what to to avoid and what has helped when medications aren’t working, especially for weightloss
So I have both Graves antibodies and Hoshimotos antibodies. My endocrinologist is always so busy and I see a student every time I go in to see him and I am just so confused by this. How can I have graves and hoshimotos?
I’ve had Graves for five years, was in remission until I caught Covid so back on meds. Basically the treatment for graves is to deliberately push it into hoshimotos.. I think what this guy is saying is pretty accurate, I have heard the carnivore diet & possibly even the keto diet can put graves into remission, about to try it for myself 😊
I'm not sure why hyperthyroid has to be treated. It increases energy requirements, and calcium turnover, but otherwise seems harmless. Eye problems seem to be mild if at all. But methimazole seems harmless. It is apparently an iron chelator. So it could actually normalize rather than suppress thyroid. The dosage of methimazole, for an iron chelator, is pretty low at a few mg, but it could be that the first effect of iron chelation is on the thyroid. Also a cat study for hyperthyroid used a 10x larger dose that was effective. I read a lot of overhyped side effects of pre 2000 studies on methimazole (skin rash..) when doctors still loved to nuke your thyroid with radioactive iodine. Tbh I'm getting the impression that there was a scramble of papers trying to show that higher doses were not more effective (when some papers did show higher doses were more effective). And they settled on a low dose in practice. As if to lower the chance of a successful outcome. So that the patient was more likely to resort to surgery. Regarding the recommendations on food, I don't see any research saying that food sensitivities have anything to do with thyroid function, or dairy in particular, or nuts. Rather the literal exact opposite: vegan and lacto ovo diets had lowest risk of hyperthyroid Prevalence of hyperthyroidism according to type of vegetarian diet, 2014 Caffeine does not affect thyroid.
Graves disease can be hyper or hypo, according to the antibodies activity. Someone who had the thyroid removed or killed with iodine STILL has Graves disease. They are no longer hyper, but they can have antibodies anyway, this means they have Graves for life. Lets not confuse Graves with hyperthyroid.
It's usually the case that antibodies decrease after surgical removal/RAI as the site of antibody attack is eliminated. This isn't always true but it tends to happen more than not. But, you are correct in that the autoimmune component of Graves' is different from the hyperthyroid component.
@@drwestinchilds thank you for your reply. Is it true that Graves attacks TSH receptors, therefore creating issues all over the body where these receptors are? It doesn't really attacks the thyroid directly, that's why it doesn't destroy it, like Hashimoto's, which is really a specific thyroid disease... making Graves a systemic disease. The over simplification of a rare disease turning it in being hyperthyroid only, has caused many patients to be wrong treated, therefore having an awful quality of life. So what to do if I'm hypothyroid after a harsh treatment with high doses of tapazole which left me worse, and with active Graves anyway? I'd be grateful if I could chat further with you about options.
I did away with gluten in it worked for me now I heard another doctor say dairy is well should be avoided that I had dairy because I don’t eat meat very rarely if any.

Can you clarify the methimazole being bad for your body and not ok long term. I can't bring myself to remove my thyroid when so many people complain of significant weight gain and fatigue and of being ignored and dismissed by their doctors and specialists. I read that there hasn't been long term studies on methimazole use but specialists find patients do well. I also read that the rate of remission increases up to 80% with 10 years use vs 50% on 18 months use (when specialists usually start pushing for definitive treatment). Can you clarify any of this as well
I'll make a video on the topic in the future to elaborate. Those studies you cited are mostly correct but it's not the methimazole doing the healing, it's other factors. There's nothing magical about methimazole that reverses hyperthyroidism, it just hides the symptoms while your body heals itself.

Hi DR, im very confused with the low Iodine. When your TSH is high = Eat more or less Iodine? When your T4 is high = Eat more or less Iodine? Some videos are saying when TSH is high, you need more Iodine. "Low levels of thyroid hormone or high levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) can indicate iodine deficiency."
Dr Child, I was diagnosed with graves disease and has been taking 10mg of strumazole in the morning and another 10mg in the evening for 6 weeks now. My t4 and t3 levels have gone down so far and my Endocrinologist asked me to take levothyroxine with half capsule for two weeks and then check the results of my blood tests and if things go well, then I will Swift to 1 tab of levothyroxine together with my 20 mg strumazole. I am confused with this médical process. Will it not be more logical to just reduce my strumazole medication for my thyroid to produce t3 and t4 instead of taking levothyroxine? I don’t feel like I need the Methimazole but will take it anyway, given it was the best of the three options. One question is; if I go into remission while taking the Methimazole would my labs show a high TSH? Would this be one way to indicate remission? Thanks for the information.
