5 years ago I built a chicken coop ( • How to Build a Modern ... ) and when we moved it to our new home we added some cheap fencing to allow the chickens to roam the hillside during the day but still keep them contained. Over the years, that cheap fencing really started to look like crap and in this video we give it a full makeover.
Looking for garden fence ideas? In this video we show you how to build a quick and easy welded wire garden fence with gate. We also were able to make setting the fence posts really easy with the use of the Simpson StrongTie EZ-Spikes. While it was a pretty small fence, we were able to get the whole thing done in about a day.

It's a pretty fence but won't keep predators out. Raccoons, possum, snakes, bobcat, and neighbor dogs can get in under the gaps between the ground and bottom rail. Every chicken run I've ever made had to have the fencing buried at last 10" into the ground and have a net across the top to keep climbing and flying predators out. Learned that the hard way.😢

The new fence look great - it's construction and it's looks. Congrats. I was interested to see the new fencing products - post spikes and gate corners. Blessings from central Georgia, USA.

Your fence and chicken coupe look great!!it’s good to know what materials are available to simplify projects! For instance, I want to build a couple of simple trellises for the front of my house and all of the materials that you used for your project are ideal for what I am designing. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Spray paint the wire mesh black, it will look more transparent and blend in with the background. Worth a try!

Very nicely done! Me & my son built a chicken coop with a covered run last year. So, I know what it takes to do something like that. Looks like you guys did a great job! 👍👍🐔🐔

That fence is beautiful. I love it. I was wondering though, did you have a problem with your chickens jumping on the cap boards and getting out of the run after building this? I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that’s what mine would do :/

For youtubers it would be great if you disclose in which area you live. Nice project but for safety reasons it's better to cut a post when placed on a stable table and not free style while the partner is holding it up. I like the design of the fence it looks good and is cheaper than all wood. I will do on of those in my backyard.

Those spikes add up at $30+ each, and then you have to buy everything else too. If you have the money, great, I'd rather go the old ways and save some money. It may be slower, but it's also cheaper.
@zedwpd
@zedwpd 11 месяцев назад
yep, dig a 2 foot hole, use a $4 bag of concrete. pour in dry then pour in water.
@rogueengineer
@rogueengineer 11 месяцев назад
Also keep in mind that posts in the ground tend to rot at ground level over time.
@Defender_Tom
@Defender_Tom 4 месяца назад
$30 each is worth not buying/renting an auger in difficult ground, buying concrete, and having to rip it all out after it rots the wood in the ground, so in the long run, the old way is not cheaper…and time is money.

@@Defender_Tom Nope. Just get the post a inch or two below grade. Poor some dirt over it and plant grass seed. Done. Cement can stay there.

Very nice looking! Our problem is rabbits eating every veggie we grow. We'd have to modify the design to bury the wire mesh in the ground in order to keep the rascals from borough-ing under.

No way you’d be able to pound those stakes into our “soil” near Ft Worth, which is clay, rock and scrabble. 😢 When I plant a plant, I don’t use a shovel/spade. I get out my giant (so heavy!) pick! I can’t amend the soil due to post oaks which don’t want humans within 20’ of them! So….I’m jealous of your dirt. For real. 😂 Looks like a terrific product, tho! And I do like your videos! 😊

This looks so simple, but I know that it would not be so easy for me with my hard clay rocky soil. Had a house built and they must had use the worst fill soil they could find. I enjoy garden but I spend more time pulling up huge rocks.

How do you stop coyotes from digging under.
@rogueengineer
@rogueengineer 11 месяцев назад
It’s not meant to keep all predators out. More to keep the chickens in and our dog out. The coop itself has an automatic door that secured them at night. I haven’t had an issue with coyotes digging under but if you did, I would suggest burying the fence about 12-16” below grade. I only went about 6”

Very nice, I'm going to have to make my a bit taller cause at that height my chickens can still fly over.

I just clip the wings of the chickens (trim feathers). Doesn’t hurt them but keeps them from flying.

I like your video, but what you said about using that as a garden fence to keep deer out is stupid because deer can jump 8 ft in the air. But other than that the video was great.

The don't like small enclosures. If it was one fence and not another a few feet away, then yes they jump pretty darn high
@Mrs.TJTaylor

Any average raccoon, fox, coyote, skunk, cat, rat, snake, dog et. al. is going to push right under or right through that fence. Or climb right over. Looks nice, but no. I’ll be setting my posts in the ground, using hardware mesh and pouring a dig proof cement barrier at the perimeter. Oh, and deer laugh at a four foot fence, so not going to protect a garden either.

Saw and no safety glasses? I would think you love that girl enough to save her eyes? I used to work in a hospital, my wife used to work in a hospital and my daughter still works in a hospital. We all hate and hated to see people loose eyes for stupid acts of neglect. A little safety can last a lifetime. PS, great fence but not worth loosing an eye over.
