I was told acid reflux can cause tinnitus. Since then I've taken reflux repair meds, and my tinnitus has declined significantly. It's not a drug that causes tinnitus, but one that reduces symptoms.

Things that work for me are: Acupuncture (£35 per session though) Sauna, hot baths and online I found a whole heap of neck exercises that help. I also use a saline nasal spray to clear congestion. It's pretty sad that dr's knowingly prescribe meds that can potentially cause tinnitus in individuals. My tinnitus has lasted over 20 yrs and has definitely effected the quality of my life. Just switching meds or stopping meds doesn't guarantee tinnitus will cease. It's great that you are sharing your opinion but there needs to be more tinnitus studies to help those of us who are suffering moment by moment, day by day and year after year.

When it 1st started i got dizzy and very nauseous and immediately i had this hissing sound in my right ear, i lost hearing in that ear though. Many years later my left ear started hissing not so loud like the right one. I came to live and accept what i cannot change.😊

I got 10 of this without any drugs. I came up from a scuba dive of which I've done many and this was just a regular mellow dive and my ear was ringing and it hasn't stopped in 20 years. There was no trauma to the ear. There was no clearing of the ear. There was no pressure difference. It just came up ringing like I was at a rock concert

Yes I too got Tinnitus from my FIRST AND LAST TIME scuba diving in Cozumel Mexico. I had a 20 minute lesson in the pool from Jose....😮 Next thing I know I'm in the ocean I had a hard time trying to get down to the ocean floor as my ears hurt but eventually made it down on the plane ride home by ears were hurting and ringing has never stopped really sucks. Sometimes I can get it to go away but stress and anxiety seem to increase it.

I took gentamicin eye drops for 1 week and Maxitrol (neomycin eye drops) for 1 week and my tinnitus got permanently worse. The doctors I reported this to were stunned that EYE drops would be ototoxic (to the point of disbelief), but others online corroborate this. Even the ENT was confused how it could have gotten into my cochlea. Yet, here I am, ringing away. Use with caution.

My one ear T was caused by gunshot sound 45 years ago. Steady increase over the years and now I have a Starky HA that emits a adjustable anti T noise. Not sure if it makes it worse but does not seem to make it better. I also get several migraines a month now at 60 years old so I am thinking my increase in T in a natural aging process.

You should talk to your doctor and see if a different BP medication could be prescribed instead, or if you can go back to your former medication. Sometimes changes in diet or physical activity could help to reduce your BP in conjuction with the old BP medication that did not cause the problem.

If you take medication and you notice Tinnitus as a result, I think it would then be too late for the doctor to change your medication or reduce the dosage. That happened to a friend of mine. He was given blood pressure tablets and after only taking the first tablets he noticed Tinnitus. He went to his doctor who changed his medication, but the Tinnitus stayed.

You will get used to it so it doesn't bother much from my experience. I saw an audiologist at the VA hospital I get care from. She recommended a hearing aid. Apparently that is a common treatment for now. I think it is supposed to enhance the ambient noises so you don't notice the tinnitus as much. I declined, as then I would have to listen to my wife more. Lol. Good luck, and don't let it become irritating. Its just another little hill in life. :)

It is difficult to find only one cause for your tinnitus. Ototoxic medications such as aspirin, loud noise exposure, aging, etc. can be factors for one's tinnitus. Tinnitus usually happens because of several factors. We cannot pin point a specific one.

Hi Dr. B. Having watched your interaction with *Dalesnale - Noise Ambient* (Tinnitus Hope | Audiologist Explains Noise Masking) I found the stats from the 135 responders to your "How good was your audiologist" survey fascinating. Having had tinnitus for over 45 years I am now seeking help again because recently it has become unbearable at night-time. I am due an appointment with ENT some time soon I hope having been referred by my local doctor who prescribed sleeping pills at my bequest. *I was wondering if you have any tips about how to get the best out of the appointment?* I'm sure others would find your advice helpful. As you say, audiologists are the "professionals" but it's a partnership on a long road trip. One thing irks me a bit and that is the audiologists I have seen (and my local doctor) suggest that my hearing is slightly below par at frequency such and such but I try to make them understand how hearing the tinnitus screeching 24/7 *masks* "normal hearing" They just don't seem to get it? How can I convey that to them in a way they understand without being disrespectful? I feel it would be a bit like trying to convince an Egyptian 4000 years ago that the Sun doesn't go round the Earth.

I listen to music with headphones a lot and went to many concerts for years. Once again no problems with hearing. Come 32 years of age I get covid. 3 months after I develop vision and hearing issues including high pitch white noise. It stayed stable until I was put on doxycycline for eye inflammation. Now I have a static noise in my right ear. Ent say that doesn't cause tinnitus. Sure I totally believe that. I tested normal in the audiogram. Nothing else done all this has progressed in just a few months after going 32 years without any problems. I'm lost. I also deal with vitreous floaters occurring at the same exact time as the tinnitus. Worst year of my life for sure.

Flouroquinolones. Affects cartilage…most notably the archilles tendon but also as I theorise? The cartilage of the inner ear apparatus. Could also be Aggravating to an acoustic neuroma.

Hello Ben, I am Aspierre N Tamba and from the Gambia am 17 years old. I have cotton bud stock in my ears for about 5 years now. I went to get the cotton remove but unfortunately the doctors end up pushing the cotton closer to my eardrum 4 years ago. Which causes my Tinnitus and I have been experiencing Tinnitus for 4 years now. What treatment would you suggest for me to get the cotton out? Some people said surgery is the only way to get the cotton out because it has been in my ears for long.

🤓 Hello, Dr. Ben. My name is Eric, and I'm a Filipino. I've been a fan of yours for over 2 months, and I've also been watching your tinnitus videos. My tinnitus began two months ago. I'm concerned because, in addition to tinnitus, I'm suffering hypnic jerks, which began one week after I was diagnosed with tinnitus, and the sound of my tinnitus intensified significantly more when I withdrew my impacted tooth. In addition, I take 5g of Melatonin, which helps me relax. I know you have a lot of followers, so I hope you notice me. I'd want and hope to speak with you via video call to clear my uncertainties. ✍✍✍✍✍

They may use those for sleep but that is not what it is meant for….that is an anti anxiety Med and very addictive. I do not know how long you have been taking them but I hope that you can taper off of them. They are also an anti seizure Med…basically a tranquilizer and they are a bad choice for sleep. I have been on benzodiazepines, which is what that type of drug is, for 15 years and I have tried to taper off three times, only to end up in hospital each time. I do not mean to scare you but if it is possible try to but DO NOT STOP ABRUPTLY BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE SEIZURES.

Ive had tinnitus for 5 years in both ears due to ear infection and noise exposure and my advice is don't let it get worse with the biggest offender being ototoxic medication which in my three experiences has made my tinnitus sharper, louder and rawer/ more piercing and, although after 2 - 3 months it subsided to a base/ manageable level, each time it failed to settle back down to what it was before taking the medication. Second offender is sudden sharp loud noises which I have had quite a few of but never lasting damage/ always settled back down to what it was previously after 2 - 3 weeks, sometimes its only lasted hours then settled back down (I carry foam ear plugs to go out and if I'm going somewhere I suspect could be loud I also take ear defenders). Second bit of advice is make sure that you don't have wax in your ears or near or on you eardrum as in my experience multiple times after getting wax out my tinnitus has become almost inaudible (wax removed via an ENT using manual extraction as apparently microsuction is too loud near the eardrum which can aggravate tinnitus). As well using distilled water ear drops put in a glass pipette bottle helps to remove ear wax. I have experienced severe tinnitus in both ears for extended periods but as for my tinnitus now my left ear is pretty inaudible its only when I lay on the pillow is when it becomes louder and bothersome but I can sleep through it, however my right ear is mild/ moderate and when I lay on the pillow it becomes quite severe, although I can still sleep through it depending on how tired I am (I sleep with 9000Hz white noise and a fan). The best way I can describe the tinnitus in my right ear when not laying down is by using audionotch's tuner on 9550Hz at 1% volume and computer volume at 24 although the tinnitus doesn't sound quite like that and its not as pronounced as the pure tone/ the tinnitus has more of a dispersed effect.
