Asha Kirkby from Skatefresh identifies the 5 most common mistakes she sees in intermediate level skaters when they begin to skate longer distances. After 21 years teaching she is very familiar with the common pathway taken by skaters who decide to get into speed and distance skating and the errors that come from this.
Skating is an incredible sport for building fitness and endurance while preserving your joints with low impact movements. However there are still risks involved if you do not train specific aspects of your skating and simply up the distance.

"Practice makes permanent." - Asha Great advice especially since it is possible to badly practice, which means you drill bad form until you're perfect at that instead!

Yes, that's precisely why I want people to practice well and do the correct movements over and over, otherwise it's time wasted or poorly used. And we don't have enough time as it is! Hope it helps you focus. The results are worth it.

I somehow knew that whatever the problem was, the answer was gonna be scooter push drills and toe roll drills. I’m pretty regular about toe roll drills, but I’ve got to get back to the scooter push to see if I can build up some more endurance. Great stuff!

I always say, it's not rocket science! The easy looking drills contain so many subtleties and nuances that they are useful for a huge range of ability levels. Skaters who don't use them will not build as good strength and endurance as those who do, plus your technique improves too. Everything wins. Enjoy, hope it's helping.

Great tips. I just don't get why would you use the plow-stop in emergency situations... The braking distance is huge compared to other stops which (admittedly) shred the wheels, like the powerstop or parallel slide...

Also the plow stop followed by the walking plow stop tends to look rather undignified and amateurish to any non skaters and I imagine some inline skaters don't want to look like an amateur to those around them 😅😅

that asessment is 101% spot on! it's a wheel saving method to slow down, or control speed on a descent, but to stop quickly, and look cool doing so, there's northing like a t-stop to powerslide transition. (maybe not the easiest move on speed skates, but the satisfaction os worth the wear on your wheels. after all, worn down wheels are trophies to take pride in! )

Thanks so much Asha - this was exactly what I needed. I've been wanting to push out my speed/distance, but had hit a wall (figuratively, I suppose I should clarify). I thought I had enough bend in my knees, but these exercises showed that I did not. And, turns out my right leg/glute is indeed much weaker and that was affecting the quality of my strides. Turns out that skating with this level of control and technique is just what the physio ordered, to wake up my lazy glute and provide some balance and stability through my hips/back. But way more enjoyable than the physio exercises for the same purpose!!

Yes there are a lot of details with something like "just skating". There's a lot going on in every moment. That's why its useful to separate things out and focus on different parts before putting it all together again.

I love your channel. I just bought boots that are just never going to close on my ankles enough. They are FR. Do you have any ideas on what to get for a tighter fit there? The boot part fits perfect but the ankle is huge and I took it to a ski boot person and he said there’s no way we can make these any smaller. I also live in a place where I have to buy online. I would love some input thank you so much for all your skating help

It's always a bit harder to get stability when she boots are not tight enough around the ankle. You can try to add footies www.powerslide.com/navi.php?qs=footies&search= or try a new liner depending of the skate you have.

So the gliding skate lands pointing straight forward, angles out on the outside edge, then pushes off the center of the wheel?? Fascinated you can do anything other than bounce from one inside edge to the other.

The trail I skate on in Upstate NY has some grades, one is 2% over a mile or so. Any good techniques for keeping speed on grade and not tiring out? I would like to do 36 miles on this trail, which is 2 full passes.

Most of the tips for a good technique you can find in many tutorial from speed skaters also. Please check Pascal Briand youtube channel for more tips in this direction.

For uphill, increase your cadence, and use arm swings. Double pushing also becomes less effective at steep grades, my under push typically disappears.

@@glenwood7917 I managed 27 miles with an average of 10.9mph. The last 9 would have been the uphill segment again so that number would drop a bit. I will try the arm swings.

Hi Asha, I'm. I'm having trouble balancing on one skate as after I make my push and bring it in to the reset. I believe you are saying the toe roll will help with that. Anything else that might help and will this just get better with time? Thanks Mark.

Think vertically align nose knee toe, when on one skate. It makes sure your weight is fully over the skate.

Stepping plow is excellent for flat ground but I think it's far too tiring for downhill

I think it depends on the down hill, and the speed you approach. The normal plough can be a great slow down method from high speeds. But yes, all stops are taxing on the body as wee have to use our muscles to create forces to decelerate. There are advantages and disadvantages of each method. That's why it's important to have a selection.

Welcome from Egypt, would you recommend a 110mm wheels or 100mm for a beginner and I want to do slides, tricks, do running and playing with cones too? Does the 110 not include all ?

For your skate wants I think 3x90 or 100 would be better but perhaps 110 is too large to be starting on and for cones. Smaller is more agile always.

So that is pronation ? Where your legs be in a V shape. I see it a lot here. Thanks for the video I gotta share it 😌

Pronation is when the skate is tilted onto the inside edge. It is almost always caused by a V-ing set down (but someone could pronate with their skate pointing straight ahead but its much less common). Fix the Ving and very often the pronation is also reduced. But it can take a lot of practice to rid yourself of the weaker foot pronation on the glide....and it can lead to injuries over time, that's the only reason to address it, oh and to get more speed!

In my opinion people are not using the plow because it feels not good and also it doesn't look good to other people.... It always looks a bit like a person stumbling around....

I agree, when it's not perfected. But I think it can look really cool and unusual when done well. I should make a video about "how to make the plough stop look cool".... It needs some work.

I concur. A t stop, powerslide or hockeystop has way more flair and looks "in control". It also is a lot more suitable for quick speed reductions. A plow or step looks beginner-ish and is slower. It does save your wheels though, so I'm going to practice those a lot more 👍

@@cateyenebula I think we just don't have enough good examples of skaters using the plough stop to good effect, the stepping plough in particular. I see a lot of good skaters in London using it in ways that don't look beginners at all and on slopes it's a really chilled way of stopping. I need to show this more. Will add to the list.

Based on marathon's footage, they do T-stop a lot actually. Why not using it on urban skates, your target auditorium's tool, while doing long distance?

T-stop are useful to stop quickly but can flatten your wheels where the plow stop saves your wheels from getting flat spots. I usually use a combination of slalom and t-stop when descending hills. Ps. Stopping/slowing down Comes to preference of the skater

It's just a wheel wear issue, the T is effective but will shred your wheels when used for fast stops. Plough stops won't, that's their big advantage.

Advanced mistake: holding up your lifted skate with sustained hamstring muscle activation - I guess you're probably exaggerating the glide for this video which is why you can see it in this video - but that hold is burning energy for nothing. You can use the momentum from the push to swing the weight of the skate around and back, then when you bring the skate forward again for the next push that movement is also keeping the skate lifted as your bent knee accelerates forward. You have to do a bigger double push with a nice deep knee bend on it for maximum effect. You really notice the difference in 3.5kg aggressive skates...

In the slower motion scoot exercise yes the extension of the pushing leg will help you build glute strength and reach the correct maximum push distance for you. But yes in skating it will become a pendulum movement and not pause as you say. Drills are drills.

I had low cut speed skates once, years ago but I never had the time to train with them properly and I'm usually teaching when a boot cuff is really useful for long days on skates. I think the drills and techniques are similar even if you're wearing speed skates. You let me know.

@@Wurmiwurm09 I was about to say the same thing. Edge work is for example harder on low cut speed skates than on more supportive boots like my Evos, but the drills, focus points and objectives of each exercise are the same.
