The first episode of my series SKATE TIPS covers the question every inline speed skater has had for the past two decades - How do I Double Push?
Subtitles available in English
0:00 Start
0:37 Double Push Defined
1:22 Compression Explained
2:32 When & How Long To Apply Compression
2:56 What NOT To Do
4:13 Creating Speed With Your Hips
5:26 Core Stability
6:11 How To Sprint/Accelerate With Double Push
7:48 Step By Step Walk-though
I plan on doing in depth tutorials on each of the three main segments of this video in the future: 1. Compression 2. Using the hips 3. Core activation -- as well as some other insightful additions including skate direction, edge drills, and off skate exercises to help improve every aspect of your skating technique. If you have thoughts on what you liked/didn't like about this tutorial or any further questions that I didn't cover, leave a comment and I'll try my best to answer. Keep in mind I am training full time while writing, shooting, and editing these projects myself, so it could take me some time to get the next episodes out. Thanks for the patience and thanks for watching.

I learned to double push by accident by just by listening to the general advice given in this video when I've only been skating for a few months now. Put some finesse into your skating with the tips he gives on evening out the pressure spikes and you can learn to efficiently generate forward motion by doing just about anything on your skates. This video is truly fundamental to good skating. Thanks Mantia - I hope your channel grows.

My comment from a beginner (trying speedskating since April 2020) on a Bont Semi Race with 3x 125mm only with RU-vid "Trainers" As a user which is watching videos from @Pascal Briand I think in this "Joey video" is missing also a few details for beginners like, inside edge und how to set the food and the ankle (direction of the skate) for double push. But as I tried out to double push the last week's, I had as a beginner the problem how to push with both legs. I made the mistake to push inside and outside with to much power and not consistent And now in this video the biggest point is and for me a big problem is solved, how to push = with about 40% to 50% percent compression the whole time without moving the body up and down. The last 2 days I skated 20km each day and tried to give on the whole movement always the same amount and a steady compression to the wheels with core strength. And that's was working great, yesterday I was able to do an average on 1kilometer with 31km/h the first time since April with a slow and controlled movement without a very high heart rate. (a little bit backwind) On faster movements or higher speeds my Technic will be "dirty" so I must train now to apply this to higher speed. So I'm very Happy with your content from Pascal and Joey Mantia, I think togheter I have the whole picture :-) Thank you

@@JoeyMantiaOfficial I have at home a little GPS receiver with 10Hz, means it measures 10times a second the speed. In theory this should able to show the difference between normal push and double push? I mean how much decrease the speed between the pushes in the gliding phase and also how is the speed within a second with double push. As you are and Pascal professionals are there measurements about this topic?
@JoeyMantiaOfficial
@JoeyMantiaOfficial 3 года назад
@@UCh5Y7Xd0i3UUWRpAjFs for me the "double push" and the "normal push" require the same principles to be applied to be done correctly- the 3 things I called out in this video. The only real difference in my opinion is that when you do what you would call the "normal push" correctly you're just preventing your wheels from being on the outer edges (wider set down), everything else is virtually the same -- to be honest, i think the "normal push" is useless in anything other than a pure 100% full sprint from the line, or the final 30m into the finish-- but if it were me I would "double push" all the way through the finish

Joey, this is an absolutely fantastic demonstration of the double push. Your balance, strength, fluidity and grace are truly awe inspiring. I've been taking inline skating lessons weekly for almost 2 years now, so I know how difficult it is to do this. You make it look very easy, but of course we both know it's not at all easy. Looking at your essentially perfect technique I see an athlete that has put in all the years of work both on and off skates to get to the point you are today. My hat is off to you; watching you skate is looking at poetry in motion. Please keep the videos coming; they are truly inspirational. bern, southern California

I see why your a champion. I increased 1 mph to 11 mph for my average speed. I can reach 12 to15 mph but I cant maintain it but after seeing you, i know why. Unstanding the constant pressure on wheels longer strokes to the end and to consistently keeping my core low and tight will really help. Last month I just stuck to the one arm swing because for some reason my 50 yr old brain can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I guess I need more experience, its only been 3 years for me. All in all, this is the best description of double pushing ever .

Just watched the tutorial and went out to try it, and am delighted by the changes in my skating. I took 3% off my best lap-time, but the best part was that while I usually do 3 6-mile laps, today I had energy to keep going even though I was going faster so I did my first marathon of the season - and beat my best solo marathon time. The other side-benefit was the pebbles on the trail didn't bother me as much as usual: the consistent compression and resulting more efficient stroke made it easier to bend my knees more and sink more into my ankles so I was back further on my skates. I was much more aware than usual of the force going directly forward. The other thing I noticed was my feet and ankles were less tired than usual after my skate: I had been trying to land on a deeper outside edge, and I think was trying too hard and using some unnecessary muscles. So exciting to make this kind of progress. I'm looking forward to attending this year's Skate IA Camp to take a session with you.

FANTASTIC! BEST VIDEO at all about DP - the most relevant details brought in a nutshell! The concept of 'compression' is the crucial point and - for me - your image of like sitting on a chair. I've done wrong (well, not surprising, being not a professional, end of fifties, self-learner) exactly all of what you figured out as to be wrong. This incredible simple image! That's it! It made me smile. I tried it out, focussing only this movement, every push "sitting" on my skates, thus I finally got the feeling of a 'real' DP together with some further improvements regarding my posture. Unfortunatedly I don't have the possibility to join a skating club, here is definitely nothing around me; the more I'm dependant on helpful hints professionals like you share with us. THANK YOU SO MUCH, as well as for your numerous great responses to many comments!!! Your image of sitting on a chair helps racing through the air! Bye bye, hands up from Germany!

Great summation of some of the core DP attributes Joey. Pascal has produced some very good stuff over the years as well. I wish I had the same access to vid/tech 15 years ago when I was trying to teach skaters how to evolve their classic technique to DP. I haven't seen your part 2 yet, but a couple of things I feel remain important to highlight: a) the delay and position of the set-down skate/leg, and 2) the benefit of having the set down skate slightly 'toed in' so that it can facilitate the desired inward arc/ tracking to achieve an underpush. Solid job! The community need more of this, and I applaud you for sharing this.
@JoeyMantiaOfficial
@JoeyMantiaOfficial 3 года назад
thanks! i definitely need to touch on the set down position. I think it's the core difference between what skaters would call a 'traditional push' and the 'double push'. As far as the skate direction on the set down, I'm on the fence, I think you should aim to have it straight and let the compression and leverage dictate where it ends up going, but if you really want to rest I guess you could toe in a little to aid that motion. I probably wouldn't teach someone to deliberately toe in on the set down more than what's natural because it would essentially nullify the leverage I'm looking for them to create by compressing, keeping the core strong, and using the abductor
