#3 is absolutely brilliant! I kind of discovered this when I was re-doing my bedroom. I had a New York loft theme in mind, but I found myself putting a number of beach themed pieces in the mix, and it really goes well together! Int. design is a lot like putting together an outfit in fashion. Too much vintage and it looks like a costume/old movie set. Too much trendiness will look dated after the trend is over. Pattern scale, textures, colors and proportion work together for a great look

I totally agree with this list. I just made over my bathroom. I picked out all the accessories first and than picked out a wall color that worked with everything. It turned out beautifully. So yeah these are some great tips to live by.

I loved the colors the gentleman painted the rooms of the house I bought. He was much more bold than I would've been. So much of my textiles etc blended beautifully. Loving all those blue velvet sofas you have featured though. I have a three hundred year old rocking chair hand made by an ancestor that is just in the way....it's a love hate relationship. Also have my great great grandmothers wicker rocker that gets dress differently every season.

New sub here!...and I really like your suggestions and rules. I try to follow what I like but I am also inspired by other dimensions. Design is all about how it makes you feel! You want comfy classy without it being too much, or over the top. I'm certainly not knocking anyone's style, but I want people to come in and put their feet up, grab a throw and get cozy. I'd hate for someone to come to my home and feel like they couldn't sit somewhere, touch something or use anything because I have it on "museum" status. Besides, you're only a guest once in my home! 😍😘😀 Thank-you! Great video and looking forward to more.😍

Great useful tips. I’m ready for changes but don’t hate my current look, so I need to do this step by step. I recently took your test and my style was rustic elegance. I’ve been moving toward this using trays and small decor pieces. At age 59 I know my past decor mistakes, scale was one of them as you mentioned in the vid. I’m not into copying Pinterest, so I need to proceed in an authentic way. My current set up is the best I ever had because it was done in a creative way over a period of time due to no money, so each thing feels important and I never felt that way when I could afford more....I’d just buy a trendy look basicaly.

Hi Bayina! Great tips! I participated in one of your first couple of 30 day makeover challenges (remember the marble coffee table???) I've found the courage to give away those bulky dark living room bookshelves that you suggested me to get rid of. Now I can move and breathe in my space. I feel like I've come a long way since then, always keeping in mind the things you've taught from the 30 day challenge. The answer, for me, from your quiz is that I have Scandinavian taste, which is totally appropriate because I am of Finnish and Swedish descent. I really like simple warm hygge and natural accents like plants, stones and pine furniture. Love wood and cottage-y lighting. I do love roman shades however.

Yass! Easy to follow and meaningful tips that make a huge impact! I wish all my friends and family would watch this! I always wait months before I paint and hang pic’s/art. The one time I didn’t, I regretted it! I hated my choice of paint for our living room and my husband was not willing to repaint it any time soon, nor did he trust me to do it myself, so there I sat, for months, stuck! It drove me nuts!! And, it was a neutral color, nothing controversial, just way too drab. Ugh. 😆

gghc totally feel you! At least you made the mistake once because you’ll never do it again. I always choose 2 or 3 colors and paint samples on the wall first. The one time I didn’t it turned out bad.

I have holes in the walls because I hang things and decide I need to move it...or I get a new item and then the whole lot needs to be rearranged...drives sweetie batty that our walls look like they have the measles. But I pull the 'we've been going to change the trim and paint the walls for years' card so does it matter...and the other card...'do you want our house to look like the parent's, move nothing, change nothing, stuck in a time warp'. It does the trick. At last the painting is 'happening'...White on White...the kitchen and the wardrobe, both newly renovated, have been done...bedroom one and two are next on the list...next week, fingers crossed.

Thank you for this video, I know this is weird.... but I like to mix traditional with contemporary/modern. For example I like wing back chairs (traditional) but I have one that is (modern) in silver colored leather. Or I have a charcoal gray chesterfield sofa, but I made it more modern by adding silver legs

i definitely have an eclectic style and took the long and difficult path of learning how to make my clothes/rooms/etc. look cohesive and not plain ol' ridiculous. tbh i wish i'd heard the 20% rule before now because it would've saved me the time!

#1 is a rule NO ONE TALKS ABOUT!!!! Out of all the 10000 pinterest pins I read about "how to decorate" I dont think I ever saw this advice. It wasnt until I got for advice from an interior designer that I realized why my home looked off. I had pretty much only had 2 textures. 2. I commented in another video that I personally disagree with painting last because it can change they way colors look in the enitre room. But you said in the beginning that rules can be broken when you know why you are breaking them. 3. I use to be really bad about buying what I like instead of buying a piece with a specific place in mind. Like I would buy decor like I pinned crap on pinterest. If I liked I bought it. GREAT ADVICE ❤❤❤

Thinking of paint colour made me laugh. My lovely man has a chimney breast in his living room which he'd papered with tacky, fake brickwork wallpaper. We painted the room white and the wall with the chimney breast a mocha colour. I also painted the real brickwork inside the disused fireplace white and put up a large, rustic wooden mirror above it. What a difference, it looks stylish and much calmer now. Words can't express how good it felt painting over that abominable wallpaper!
