I agree, but often people decorate to impress others, not themselves, because they want others to like them and be with them in their homes. But they get so consumed with what they want for themselves that they fail to consider what others may be comfortable or uncomfortable with. If they decorate just for themselves and expect no one to ever visit then what they are doing is perfectly fine for them. And when selling your house, understand that that house is no longer yours (or you) the instant you decide to sell. You must revamp the whole house so as to not offend or restrict any kind of buyer out there. If that's not your style then that's okay; the house is not you anymore from there on out.

Do find a good piece of original art that you love as a focal point instead of a mass produced print
@virginiamoss7045
@virginiamoss7045 3 года назад
@@elsajones6325 I agree about the focal point, but original art is expensive and it may not matter to some people. With the obscene wealth gap in this country nearly everyone cannot afford such luxury. Prints are fine if you truly love them and can live with them happily. Or if you like to change out frequently for whatever reason. When I was first married and we had no money, we checked out framed prints of classic artworks from the library every month and it cost us nothing.

I don't know if you've studied it or not, but this is like basic Feng Shui. Allowing the energy to move and the house to breathe. My husband is a disabled veteran, but years ago when his PTSD was off the charts I noticed that calm home spaces helped him to relax and get grounded again. I started looking into EVERYTHING possible to help and I started learning about Feng Shui. It was/is amazing how placement of items in a space can change your mood. My kids learned early on about this and my oldest was explaining how to move things in her boyfriends home. He kind of laughed it off and said it was all mumbo jumbo until she made the changes and he noticed the difference. Love your channel, I'm a new subscriber. Are your curtains covering part of the window when they are open? Move your rods out a bit so you can push the curtains out of the way and then take down everything and put half of it back...you can change things out every season...too many things makes a room look too busy. I was recently shown a photograph of a landscape (I’m a retired landscape designer) that had so many beautiful plants but nowhere to rest your eyes. Absolutely wonderful colors and specimens but there was so much to look at that it was unsettling. Every blank wall doesn’t need to be filled. Make up a vignette of some of your pretty things but cycle them in and out so there isn’t too much going on.

Husband and I have a minimalist home and we LOVE negative space! We have large sculptures and canvas art that have their own designated wall space. However, family (mostly) will come in and say "Oh...you wanted it to look so vacant? or "What you going to put on this wall it needs something? or my favorite, "I'm going to Target, WalMart etc.. if I see something, I'll text you a picture ! Now I have had pieces in my home from those retailors as throughout the years, budgets had dictated my style, but now in this stage of our life, we are able to invest in quality, so we are particular in how we curate our home. I think having a matching set is cohesive versus a bunch of mismatch peices that come off as cheap because you couldn't afford a whole bedroom set, rather you got hand me downs from relatives because you need specific items like a dresser and bed. 2 different peices like just looks like donated items from 2 different people who didn't want their crap anymore
@andreaandrea6716
@andreaandrea6716 3 года назад
@@kraemerashley88 Actually, it depends. You can go to those 'Going Out Of Business' furniture stores where they sell SETS of furniture, everything matching (because that's what people used to want) and get everything at a very low price (it's how they hook you). But if you look inside those drawers you will see that they are VERY cheaply made, will begin to fall apart after a few years of use, and END UP AS LANDFILL. Things that are passed down in the family CAN be incredibly well made (not always) and be of the sort of quality that, if you were to try to buy it new, would cost an arm and a leg. I would kill for the furniture my aunts had. They were gorgeous. Most furniture made NOW is complete garbage and will NOT last (and anyone with an eye for detail will know). The skill, or the TALENT of someone with a good sense of design, is finding different pieces that COMPLEMENT each other in style WITHOUT BEING THE SAME. THEN you have cohesion but not matchy-matchy.
@kraemerashley88
@kraemerashley88 3 года назад
@@andreaandrea6716 looks I understand older furniture can be durable but some.of these items from road side are missing parts, warped from being left outside and most have to be worked on to be usable, my first dresser was a hand me down, it fell apart in the first 6 months I got and the top needed to be resurfaced, which I did, waste of time and materials, current set I have and had it for 12 years now no issues, no warps, made of actual wood, so those going out of business stores probably got their inventory from places like Walmart who cleared out their own inventory
@Sandyyyyyyyyyy
@Sandyyyyyyyyyy 3 года назад
@@kraemerashley88 I see what you're saying but I think it's all in the pieces you choose. If I like a modern farmhouse style and buy a mid-century sideboard and plop that sucker in my modern farmhouse living room then you bet it's gonna look weird. On the other hand, if I find something that matches the colors and style of my space then it'll look good. Kinda like the saying "your eyebrows are sisters but not twins," same goes for my furniture. Side note: My nightstands match, two of the three lamps in my bedroom match (the third is a different shaped base, same color/texture/style). Just wanted to put it out there that I do buy matching pieces it's just not every piece in the space.

I agree with a lot of your tips. With the bedroom set thing especially and the glam style. I feel it's best that you have pieces that are not exact matches but other furniture/art that will contrast I.e. farmhouse+ boho. Thanks for sharing!

Each to their own. I love, love, love my cheap tacky decor, lol! It's fun, affordable and easy to switch up, which I used to do every season before I got old and it got hard to do. And I thought the 'cheap and tacky' shiny room you showed was gorgeous! It's not what I have. But I thought it was beautiful. I do enjoy watching these kind of videos to see what other people are doing. I'm the same way with makeover videos. Watch to see what other people are doing. But I usually think the ladies looked better doing their own thing. But you do lovely work. I see you seem to work with people individually. I think when people work with a stylist or interior designer they meet with a few and find who they click with on style. I'm sure you've had lots and lots of happy satisfied clients, and will have many more to come. And so nice of you to share your style on You Tube as well. :)

We both love museums and galleries, and tried to emulate the feeling of comfortable gallery space in our place - with the furniture low and dark (with some architectural interest) amidst art and interesting natural history items. Not sure we adhere to all your rules, but, gave them a try!

I am guilty of having grommet curtains but in my defense I like the slightly industrial/beachy vibe they give off . I think it depends on the decor, they can be hard to pull off though. I agree that in general stuff on top of cabinets tends to look tacky but I have seen some talented ladies make it look good. I used to be very minimalist but now I am not, I am really liking the more is more vibe. LOL!

@Lorena Jaimes Think crisp white linen or cotton panels {like the ones PB sells} cascading in front of French doors which open onto the beach, and are romantically blown ever so slightly by the wind. :D At least that's what is in my mind, lol. I have seen them in lots of blogs over the years in beach houses or in beachy decor. Honestly I have always associated them with the beach. They do have to have the correct weight or they look bad really fast. www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/beachcrest-home-denton-solid-room-darkening-indooroutdoor-grommet-curtain-panels-bchh2614.html Here's somewhat of an example of what I mean.

I agree. I think the industrial vibe of the grommet curtains really work with certain styles. I also agree that the big airy grommet holes can look beachy too (I lived on an island). But generally I don't usually like grommet curtains in a "typical " style home. I think they can look tacky.

After living in my house for 15 years, finally made a few changes. I was agonizing over what to do, what was “right,” and what “look” I wanted to achieve. Ultimately I tired of going in circles, and made a list of all the things that I love and want around me. (Plants, books, candid photos, blankets, pillows, etc.) Then I picked out furniture with NO care of whether it went together - each piece was selected for comfort! I wanted lots of soft, filtered light, so tossed my heavy drapes and hung gauzy-linen type white panels. Once I stopped trying to do all the “right” things and went this route, it all fell into place pretty easily. I’m happy in this space! Bottom line - get what you love!! If a matching bedroom set makes your heart go pitter-pat, get it! I’ve always wanted a set but never could part with the money....now I find out my mish-mash of furniture is stylish.... huh 🤷🏻‍♀️

Im actually feeling proud and good about the "unawares choices" I made for my living room. I do have mix matched items in the living room and without having any knowledge of interior decorating, I do feel a sense of the area showing my personality. I feel very comfortable in that room. However having said that , I do have some furniture that is the same look. For instance my table top is the same design as my bakers rack and they are the sme as my television cabinet. They have a dark brown marble look. But I have a grey sectional and textured pillows and different chairs in the room. One faces the tv along with the sectional and i have 2 others that face away. Actually behind the sectional making it look like I have 2 living rooms back to back. The ones facing the opposite direction, like I said they are behind the sectional. One is a rocking chair and the other a wicker chair. They too have pillows one flows in color along with the pillows on the sectional but the colors are not exactly alike. And the other chair has an offset color. Thank you for the info. I love the ideas.

I agree with everything particularly grommet curtains , they can really devalue the look of a room . That ‘ glam ‘ shiny look is very tacky. It’s taken me over 30 years of being a home owner to finally understand that it can take months to put a room together , never be afraid of an empty space in a room , I have taken two years to find and fall in love with a piece of art to hang on a huge empty wall in my living room . Great informative video , Thankyou !

Ringlet curtains are space saving for small spaces. Often pelmeted or gathered curtains can look cheaper as they look ready made even if they aren’t. With textures and finishes, I always use rule of 3, 3 types of texture or finish and 3 groups of finishes or fabrics. A maximum of 3x3.

You have studied design, etc. but at the end of the day, I decorate my rooms to make me happy. My home is not a show home but filled with the things that bring me joy to look at. In a previous video of yours, I remember you saying not to buy a matching living room set. My couch and love seat have matched for years with a different patterned chair and I love it that way. We have a large rectangular living room so I like both a couch and love seat to provide enough seating. Also, I am not a minimalist, so I am sure my rooms may look cluttered. Your comments may provide guidance for those who need decorating help or want to follow 'the rules." I wouldn't call someone's style cheap or tacky as we each have different tastes in life and should be respectful of that.

I did pretty good on this one. My bedroom is a matching set but not a full one. I opted out of some of the larger pieces like the giant mirror, One night stand, and the tall dresser I can’t think of its name right off hand. I did add a chair. Great drapes. And beautiful bedding. For years I have always mixed and matched on my bedroom set and have never had anything close to having anything matching. I feel much more calm in a room that it has at least three pieces that match. The room is so small. And I brought in my own mirror for personality and a small chair because I believe that you should have a chair in your bedroom no matter how big. I am in my late 40s and finally have created a bedroom that I am comfortable and that I don’t full looks cheap! Love your channel!

I am 100% with you on almost all of these, especially the grommet curtains! I don’t even think they belong in a kid’s room to be honest. The only point I partially disagree with you on is the decor above the cabinets. I agree with you that it doesn’t help the kitchen look “high end,” but not all of us can or want to look high end. Those of us renters with older kitchens and lumpy cabinets that can’t be painted without tremendous effort can actually create more of a funky and slightly antique look with a select number of decor items above the cabinets. I have a wicker picnic basket and a couple of vintage trays above my cabinet, and I feel like it instantly improved the look of my kitchen. Can this get too cluttered? Absolutely. But I do think that some of us are not going for “high end” as much as comfortable, funky, and tasteful. And I like most of your tips for this.
