Black shoes are always in style and a classic whether they are monk straps, wing tips, cap toes or other classic styles...every man should have at least one pair of them. Cedar shoe trees for leather and suede help keep their shape and longer life too.

First pair of dress shoes I bought with my own money was a pair of Wingtips when I was 14 (still own them 30+ years later, BTW). Though all of these shoes are great and definitely have their own time and place, for me it's gotta be Wingtips.

I'm just going to throw in a wrench here haha. Monkstraps and brogues are my two favorites! (Monkstraps being number 1.. Sorry George), but I agree with George, I am not the biggest fan of loafers either..

Monk straps, single and double get the most compliments out of all the shoes I have. Wingtips are next especially Wingtip boots!

i got chestnut/cognac brogue and before a dark brown double monkstrap. Sorry Blake, I'm with George this time. I got compliments with my brogues and zero on monkstrap (i still like monkstrap though)

A black Oxfords, a brown Wingtip Brogues, a blue Boat shoes. and a white Cross trainer snickers for sports. That would be my basics. Expand from there.

Cronz Cariaso Jr agree with you. Working shoe, versatile shoe, casual shoe, sport shoe. But i add one dress boot (chelsea, balmoral, or derby boots) to fight rainy or snowy days.

MH J Yes, I will totally agree with you. A black derby boots is very good for that formal/semi formal business dailies that needs black shoes and yet your black oxfords are too formal for the occasion. :-)

I only own 2 dress shoes. A pair of plain black double monks, and black half brogue derbys (just as much broguing as a wingtip, except mine just have a cap toe instead of the wing). I have to say, I get a lot of compliments on my derbys. Never on the monk straps. I know you can get brogue monk straps, but I think with the buckles and broguing they're a little too busy looking, little flashy. The derbys pull off broguing just right and look sharp as fuck

I own both brogues and monkstrap, I get more compliments for the brogues than the monkstrap although that might be because I wear the brogues more. Both are great shoes tho. No winner here.

most brogue's are shoes that attempt to look intriguing, but end up over doing it. and so many people have them/wear them regularly that they don't look like anything special at all. if you can find a shoe with a bit more subtle broguing, go for it, otherwise, I'd stay away from them.

Penny loafer is my #1 shoe and have all types. They look great but have to be careful how you style it or you will old man or too 80's. Wingtip I tried to like them but my 3 pairs hardly get used. Black Oxford are my least used shoe but my job don't require suits.
