Welcome back everyone, today we're going over five dumb things about Dragon Quest XI. DQXI is a great game and one of my recent favorites, but that doesn't mean there aren't any weird and dumb things about the game from the story to the gameplay mechanics. Just some things that make no sense and really make you scratch your head. Hope you enjoy!

I've always thought that when the luminary travels back in time at the beginning and meets his Grandparent, It's not the power of the luminary allowing this, but the power of the Yggdrasil root on the tree in the middle of the village. Because if you touch the tree after that scene, it says that the root used all of it's power. I think that was made possible only because Yggdrasil did that.
@LonelyBoy94

That's also what I'm thinking. I'm currently playing the game and yes, the time travelling was after a you touched the root.

And it was temporary too maybe the route didn’t allow you to physically actually time travel to the past but maybe it just projected an image of you with the ability to speak nothing more much like a ghost except the ability to talk and be seen because you had to give up the sword of light to time travel permanently I don’t believe it was very easy to project an image of yourself in the past for Yggdrasil
@tomasfong40

I was thinking the same thing. also its implied that the luminary was destined to travel back in time since some of the stuff that you do in the past is said to have happened in the beginning of the game. I guess is more of a timeloop type deal

when the luminary travels back in time at the beginning and meets his Grandparent it is from him touching the root of the tree. so the guy in the video is either not paying attention to the game or he forgot it. it is not a power of the luminary himself he is totally wrong on that one.

@FFgamesftw
@FFgamesftw Год назад
I always viewed it that if he didn't go through those events it would have created a time paradox. If he went back in time and Chalky as a result told him to not go to Heliodor then the events would have never played out to even tell him that going to Heliodor was a bad idea meaning when future Luminary went back in time he'd have no reason to tell Chalky to not send him to Heliodor which would mean Chalky would still end up telling him to do that due to the letter. This would just create an infinite loop of logical contradictions. So doing it the way they did causes the least amount of paradoxical nonsense. Basically going back in time and changing the past creates all sorts of problems as you erase the reason for going into the past to enact said change. At least with them letting the events still play out but then providing aid to future you it could still work.

I think the "Yes/No" thing really isn't bad at all. Its actually entertaining and funny seeing how everyone respond to your "No" response. They're all written in ways that understand just how antiquated that design is, makes fun of it, and shows off just how charming the cast is (such as Veronica forcing you to say Yes when a "damsel" demands it, or when Jade is just "stretching her legs"). While yes, you technically do get more dialogue options in something like Persona 5, your choices don't change the story there either. Other games with marriage/dating options typically are designed around them (Fire Emblem, Rune Factory etc...) and not just relagated to post-game as an option. Personally I'd rather DQ not go down the visual novel/dating sim route at all, but that's just me.
@AIBAGold

@geekdaparaiba
@geekdaparaiba 2 года назад
You have good points about it. Albeit... In the case of the "time travel", it actually foreshadows an important plot point in the third act, which the Luminary goes back in time to prevent the fall of Yggdrasil. As for the forgiveness in the game, Vince is not the only victim of this. Krystalinda turned all the citizens in ice statues and she's pardoned by Queen Frysabel. There's implications that Doge Rotondo ratted out the Luminary and his companions to Jasper. And then... the Kingdom of Heliodor. Man, the Kingdom of Heliodor. In Act 1, once King Carnelian discovers the truth about the Luminary, orders him arrested, persecution and his adoptive hometown burned. The reveal that Carnelian was possessed by Mordegon make this worse as this event wasn't foreshadowed at all. (Except in Dundrasil and that Phenomenon city, but it's still vague). Even worse, Hendrik never pulled a Beatrix/Celes and defected after discovering the king's true nature, instead only joining the party under orders of the king. Twice. Perhaps the message of DQXI is that "All humans are sympathetic and deserves forgiveness and all monsters, as cute as they are, deserve to die". The only exceptions are the aforementioned Krystalinda (And she looks like a humanoid than a monster.), Jasper and Mia, and even then, the latter two are still humans who are monsters by choice. Dragon Quest XI S is a nice game, but even the most beautiful rose has thorns. At least it's not as bleak and cruel as... The Last of Us Part II.
@frenchfrey65
@frenchfrey65 2 года назад
ehhh I kinda disagree that Carnelian possessed by Mordegon came out of no where, it's clear in flashbacks early game that he was friends with the other kings including the King of Dundrasil, it's so obvious that he's not supposed to be a bad guy considering you're still sent to see him in the beginning of the game, or else the townsfolk would tell you to go somewhere else. If anything I thought it was predictable, cuz how else did Jasper get his powers? How else was Mordegon supposed to reveal himself? Something to consider

There is 1 instance where there is a Yes/No, that gets one of the funniest reactions. It's in DQ VIII, after being rescued from being buried in an avalanche. When the hero wakes up, you have to talk to all your team members, when speaking to Angelo, he makes a comment about the dog that rescued you is more useful and smells better than King Trode. If you agree with Angelo, King Trode has a hissy fit. To make it even better, it doesn't force you to go back and give the "right" answer
@FFgamesftw
@FFgamesftw Год назад
yeah many people complain about the "yes/no" not being a real choice in DQXI but really in most games with dialogue choices it will often just change the next line of dialogue and then the characters will continue on with the exact same story beats they would if you made the other choice. Some will also give alignment type of stats but these usually at most choose the noble vs renegade ending for a game. There really aren't alot of games where your dialogue choices will drastically change the plot of the game as that would be far too much work for the developers.

I have minor nitpicks 1. Hero isn’t that expressive compared to the 3DS version and to an extent Smash 2.A lot of sheaths and scabbards aren’t modeled when you equip weapons (especially on costumes) 3. Party members don’t follow you in towns and their weapons aren’t modeled outside of battle 4. I wish Tickington got the same treatment as the 3DS version where a lot of places are actually modeled 5. I wish Jade’s voice actress could speak up in cutscenes 6. When you hover over any equipment it doesn’t render before you pick it Edited: 7. The hero doesn't speak outside of being a child when he should at certain scenes 8. Party members don't have a running animation when following you on the overworld 9. Veronica doesn't really have a unique death animation (when she gets crit or dies to a powerful move if under leveled) 10. - - - - - I’ve been watching a 3DS play through so that’s why I’m saying some of these I might comeback to this comment to add more things once the thought comes across my head.

The marriage system was definitely undercooked, it wasn’t even all there in the original version, you could only marry Gemma (That’s why she’s the only one that gets a nice illustration). This is disappointing since DQ was one of the first jrpgs with marriage options in V and they were really well done. Time travel didn’t make sense but that just fictional time travel for you. If the hero had never gotten himself jailed then the whole chain of events that caused him to time travel and warn his grandpa would’ve never happened so he would’ve gotten himself jailed and then… You get the idea. that whole section was pretty hearth warming so I tend to give it a pass. Imo the dumbest thing was when the hero went back in time, everything is back exactly as it was at the point he returns… Except Michele who is back to being alive for some reason even if you saw her die way before the point you time travel back to.
@Ageleszly

Marriage in V wasn't an option. It was its defining feature you could say, the whole story revolves around the family of the protagonist I suppose that's why some people expect something similiar for the sequels, but in truth each game focuses on different underlying themes. I think the point of Eleven traveling back in time to when Chalky was alive is more than likely because of the Yggdrasil root in the village. Think about it, it’s the only root you never physically interact with once, and yet there was a flashback scene in the village. It’s the only logical explanation. It was Yggdrasil sending Eleven back in time not just to start the chain of events, but also maybe to hide the sad truth of Cobblestone a little bit longer.

Now Luminary remembers the events of ACT2, he knows that King Carnelian(possessed by Mordregon), Jasper and Hendrick are following them really close. Luminary knows that the moment they start to fight Jasper, Veronica will die just to save the rest of the group but Luminary doesn't speak(which is dumb as hell bc we saw Kid-Luminary speaking in several flashbacks); He could warn his friends and prepare accordingly, he doesn't even need to tell the truth(or he can but usually people are sceptical about time-travelling) but that doesn't happen...they still manage to prevent what actually happens in Act2...but it's really dumb how Luminary could solve half of that situation if only he told about it to the team.

One of the things I would've liked to see added was the world reacting to the defeat of the final boss in act 3. Imagine how fun it would be to travel around the world and see all the cheers and bright smiles of the denizens of the world you just saved. It would be the similar to the end of Act 2 before the transition to 3, except the world isn't demolished. And the Death Star floating over Gallipolis wasn't what people were raving about all the time like at the end of act 3. This could've been an opportunity to allow the player to reexplore the world for a final time and celebrate the long journey. Maybe even certain kingdoms could've been hinted starting a rebuilding effort. I understand that this is to allow the player to refight the final boss using the JRPG trope that makes time revert before the final boss is defeated, but they could've worked that in other ways (Looking at you tockle time machine tower). Regardless this is still my favorite game of all time. My suggestion would've made for better closure imo, because I'm not gonna lie, I felt very empty when I finished my first playthrough (amazing games will do that to you).
@FFgamesftw
@FFgamesftw Год назад
tbh I think the great celebration of the world only really works if the world has suffered great loss at the hands of the bad guys. If you went around at the end of Act 3 it would go something like this. Party: "Hey everyone we just beat Calasmos" World: "Ummmm who is that exactly?" Party: "An ancient evil entity that was planning to destroy the world" World: "Oh well, I guess good job, that would have been pretty bad if you hadn't stopped them" At the end of Act 2 pretty much everyone knows, is terrified of, and hates Mordegon because of what he did. Taking out Mordegon and having the world celebrate works because of the destruction he caused. While Calasmos did drive many monsters around the world crazy it's really hard to connect him to any of those events.

No matter how enjoyable the scene is it's sheer plot convenience that they were able to will themselves out of his chains to accompany you to the final fight. I only care so much because they could've easily NOT had a Jasper fakeout so this scene could take place but they didn't then opted to take the cheapest way out of what they wrote themselves into

I feel the biggest issue of this game is the entire structure of the plot. It's more like an Final Fantasy epic, grand scale plot. Dragon Quest has always been about small scale subplots you just stumble upon. Here, it all has to serve the main story, save for the mermaid thingy. This wouldn't have been much of an issue if the plot actually worked. It doesn't, because DQXI still lacks the elements needed to make such a story work. Good characters, exposition, an interesting villain.

If there were no pause in these moments, some players would go right through it without even noticing that a new character is in the party or that the status quo has changed. Dragon Quest at least make these weird questions a bit funny by adding stupid dialogue when you choose the wrong answer.

I get your point about the horse race not needing to be won not making sense from a plot standpoint, but from a gameplay standpoint it would be ungodly awful. They could have skipped it and had it be a cutscene or a fade to black and skip it, but having it so if you lose the prince is unhappy? So you need to win? Fuck no! You're thrown into a brand new minigame using different controls and rules than you're used to. It's a common enough thing in JRPGs, and it's not a well liked trope. Forcing you to win it would be a terrible idea. Skipping it would probably have been the best option, but there being no consequence to losing is the next best choice the developers could have made.
@RedOphiuchus
@RedOphiuchus 4 месяца назад
It makes sense from a plot standpoint, too, because Faris isn't concerned with winning. He's concerned with not looking incompetent. He needs the luminary to go out there, look steady, balanced, and in control, and not fall off his horse. The point of it is that the pressure he's under isn't unreasonable pressure. He's just lazy and incompetent and needs you to make him look like a baseline of competence. Most stories wouldn't go that way and would require you to win for narrative interest, this choice was clearly made intentionally for the gameplay reasons you're discussing. But I personally like how humorous and unique the situation ends up being because of it.

There are some more dumb things I noticed as well, such as the leap you take with Erik at the start of the game, and the power of friendship stuff at the end of Act 2. When you escape Heliodor with Erik, you both take a leap off a cliff face and fall into a forest a hundred or so metres down. You both survive, thanks to believing in the power of the Luminary. What bothers me is how this power is never used again. Perhaps the power of friendship stuff I'll mention next is a repetition of this power, but it's not too clear. When the Spectral Sentinels return to sneak snare the party, they are freed from the snares with the very strong faith they have with the Luminary. If this is that power, all is forgiven. What bothers me far more is how the Sentinels returned to do this in the first place... You killed them all except for Mia, who was redeemed. They all vanished into purple dust. How did they return? This is never explained, and no hint is provided later. Maybe someone can help enlighten me on these things.

tbf the video comp of the luminary saying no was pretty hilarious. The lack of consequences in the game is probably just because they mostly wanted to follow a single story without it branching, so they pretend that you won the race in order to continue the sequence of events without needing another scenario to write around. I won't lie by saying they're brilliant design choices, but much like octopath traveler, dqxi very much feels designed to be modeled as an older game, which fits pretty well with the theme. They could've totally gone a different route if they wanted, but I think the devs may have wanted to do it because this game is a fully fledged remaster of its 3ds version. DQXII, on the other hand, is a game that should represent dragon quest's future, so I'm hoping it won't have any of these poor design choices whilst still giving an experience worth remembering. btw nice touch @ cc for saying thwacking lol

This game frustrates me. For one it's gorgeous to look at, it oozes charm, the voice acting is really solid (except for Michelle the mermaid who I wanted to strangle), good combat system, neat crafting system with the mini forge, and nice music. However as you pointed out, the silent protagonist just doesn't work in this day and age. they didn't even give him various facial expressions to go along with what was happening. He's the most important character in the game and yet he's just a shallow husk that walks around with the other characters, which is weird because when he goes back in time he meets his younger self who has a voice and talks. The story is interesting in some areas, and absolutely bored me to death in others

this gonna be interesting 1 "but thou must" think its more like an inside joke of the series, and not something that the player sould take seriously 2 i think the group chat and other npc say something special if you are married and in cobblestones, at least i know what they say if its gemma, its something more like how they are surprised that the hero sudenly burst out in lots of talkin, and how everyone was surprised that the hero sudenly talks, and then later say something like how the hero dont realy know of anything that happend after the marriage, and i think the reason for that is, is because trustan took the form of the hero, and dit all the talk for him, because the hero just is to shy to be able to talk much 3 well the thing is, the hero him self was not realy so sure what happend, after all, he is still at the beggining of his journey, maybe that time travel realy just was a thing that happend, because the hero just dit not want to see how cobble stone got destroyed, and he him self was not actualy sure if he actualy went back in time during that time, and maybe his adoptive dad just had no time left, to tell everyone that the hero came as an adult to him, and even if he dit, how big of a chance there is everyone would belive him? i mean his adoptive mother dit not reconize the hero, so theres that 4 well the thing is, prince faris realy cant ride a horse, as you can see how he moved on one of them at the end, and its better to lose by being able to ride one, then to completly make a fool out of yourself, trying to ride a horse, after all, everyone expects that prince faris is able to ride a horse, there never realy was any talk on winning, he has just simply needed to be there, alsol i do think sylvando does say something differend depending if you get first or not 5 as rab says, "there has been worse thing done for more self gaining" and sometimes power may just blind people into doin unspeakable things, even if feedin a giant spider is 1 thing, he was just thinkin about the poor childreen at the house, and wantin to get money for the house, so that way it dont has to close it, that the children dont have to end up on the streets, so he trys desperate things to help the kids he holds close to him i hope my explaining things helped makin at least some things a bit more clear about why something is, how it is, and why some things are like that

How is she alive in Act 3? I wracked my brains and I still don't understand it. I can't even find like a hint or throwaway line. She's just... alive, somehow. Two, during the MMA in Octagonia, it annoyed me how it's meant to be random team matchups but yet all the teams you face seem to have absolutely perfect synergy with one another. I know it would have been underwhelming if it actually was "random" teams, but the fact that all the teams you face seem accustomed to their partner and no one else, I think maybe it should have been that the Luminary was added to the lot and only he had to draw for a team.

He doesn't time travel. Is more like a mind-journey thing. His physical body goes nowhere and that's why Erik says the Hero was spacing out, like in a trance or something. I interpret it more like he contacted his adoptive grandfather in a dream or through a shared vision and that's how granpa knew he had to leave behind the letters and the keystone. We was using the World Tree root as a pshychic link to his grandfather in the past. The whole game explains over and over again how the Tree is the source of all souls, keeps the memories of everyone and the Hero is a chosen avatar to the powers of the World Tree. It may all sound over the top but it's fantasy, although the rules and laws of this world are explained plenty across the game. The marriage system I agree it's lazy and nonsensical but not the powers of the Luminary.

The dumbest thing is...the constant fcking BLINDING white transitions throughout your hundred hour playthrough that makes your eyes bleed if you play in a dark room (like 99 percent of gamers).

Man, I loved this game. Best traditional old school style rpg I’ve played in years. Only thing I’m not a fan of are silent protagonists, even tho some of my fav games of all time have them

I hadn’t played anything past 10 and was curious if the “yes/no” affected the outcome. Question answered. It’s dumb🤣.

There is only one single thing that I want. For the OG PS4 version to get Transmog!!!!! I HATE the lesser graphics in the new S version since it's a freaking Switch port which is just insulting, thus I actually prefer the original. & I HATE not being able to pick the look of my character that I want unless I want to wear some super weak, outdated armor on my character. I REALLY wish the original could have gotten some patches to at least add some of this basic stuff.

The whole "oh no, I'm forced to say yes" thing is.... A dumb thing to complain about.
