5 Examples of Verbal Harassment At Work

35% of employees feel that they’ve experienced harassment. This figure is even higher for women as 41% say that they were victims.
Often, this workplace harassment is verbal. Certain comments and remarks that staff make to each other can be offensive, inappropriate, and insulting.

The problem is that some people think this behavior is acceptable or they don’t realize it qualifies as harassment.
Verbal harassment is often defined as “language directed at another person that causes that person harm, typically in an emotional or psychological sense.”
Like I mentioned before, some people don’t realize that some language qualifies as harassment. This includes jokes. In fact, 32% of people are unaware that jokes can be sexual harassment.
Because not everyone knows that certain jokes are inappropriate for the workplace, they may end up defending themselves after an insulting remark. Perhaps you’ve heard someone at work say one of the following lines, or you’ve said them yourself...“It was just a joke!”, “You take things too seriously”, “I’m only kidding”.
Sure, sometimes these “jokes” don't have malicious intent, but rather were just a poor choice of words. But other times, jokes are an attempt to conceal mean-spirited comments or opinions. Some employees may have malicious intentions with their remarks but try to disguise it as a joke so it seems less harmful. But really, it still hurts the person they’re harassing.
Many words cause significant pain when directed at minorities. Because of their severity, I won’t spell them all out for you. But they’re so common that you probably know what they are. Common examples include:
Many words cause significant pain when directed at minorities. Because of their severity, we won’t spell them all out for you. But they’re so common that you probably know what they are.
These offensive slurs are another instance of illicit workplace language. Because of the emotional harm that they can cause to employees, it creates a hostile environment. Court systems can even deem discriminatory language illegal in the workplace.
Instead, I’m referring to sounds that someone makes intentionally. There are so many different instances of these, such as whistling when someone walks by or groaning when your least favorite coworker walks into the room.
Some noises may even qualify as sexual harassment. Even if the harasser doesn’t verbalize any remarks, these inappropriate sounds create an uncomfortable and intimidating environment for the victim.
It’s okay to ask your colleagues questions such as if they enjoyed the weekend. Engaging in these conversations helps create a friendly atmosphere.
But you shouldn’t ask questions that pry into their life. There are some taboo topics that people consider to always be off-limits in the workplace. Some of these include topics about finances, politics, religion, drug or alcohol use, weight, pregnancy or family planning, or disabilities.
Of course, some of these have a fine line between what is and isn’t appropriate. For instance, if you have concerns that someone is struggling with substance abuse, you would want them to get help. But there are ways to address concerns without putting someone on the spot in the middle of the workday. The tone you use can also be a factor in showing that you care versus accidentally humiliating them.
Obviously, threats of physical harm are a severe form of verbal harassment and are illegal. Any threats of violence should get reported to legal authorities. But workplace threats typically occur differently.
For instance, managers may threaten to fire or demote an employee if they don’t meet certain goals or adhere to non-work-related requests. This would create negative pressure for employees and lead to an unhealthy workplace.

People on the bottom tend to get it the worst, and a lot of people are at the bottom because they have neurological problems - like ADHD or Aspergers - or depression. Verbal abuse can be devastating to a person who is already struggling to hang in there. Stand up to authority figures when they do it to you AND when they do it to others. We have to be willing to risk our job sometimes but it's the only way these many, many toxic work centers will change.

Do I have a right to report my boss for this? She was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift. One of our student leader's responsibilities is organizing who works which shifts on the schedule, and my boss scolded him for not noticing I had signed up to go solo. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" (something like, that, so I'm not perfectly quoting her), and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. That was very insensitive and harsh, and I think that if she said that to a person with a learning disability, they would be hurt and deem her a bigot. I should've told her that, to make a point to her about tact. Can I report her for verbal abuse?

Do I have a right to know how my company handled my workplace harassment? On my 3rd day of work a unknown coworker I had 1st encountered said I shouldn’t be hitchhiking because I was waiting for someone to pick up from work location. I questioned him the following day via text where he lied and said another customer of the made the comment and then followed up by calling me a crazy bitch. I was stunned and made copies of the text communication and sent to company manager. No reply from the company.

There’s a cleaner where I work (who is employed by a subcontractor but worked at the site for years) who covers the area I work in. When the supervisors and managers aren’t around, he talks to workers in a loud verbal abusive manner, sometimes out of the blue sudden shouting, making people jump and it’s very distracting, with occasional insults and physical aggressive behaviour. After a while I realised that this is his natural character and it’s his type of humour, which people have become numb to. Most of the time his behaviour goes without a laugh from anyone. Most of the people who seem to be friends with him, more than likely accept his behaviour because they’d rather not confront him or be his enemy. I would appreciate anyones thoughts on this.

As a harassment victim I have always been alone. I used to have normal relationships with people, until I got stalked by a young guy. After that I have been attacked by bunches and bunches of nasty people. Doesn't matter which gender, they are all showing the same behavior. They have lose relationships, act out all day how fantastic they are, but attack a genuine person that knows she has a lot more to offer and deserves a lot more than they have to offer. I am very private and have had to have therapy due to PTSD I got from being stalked. They will walk around calling me the nastiest names in the book. I will arrive at work nicely dressed and my hair styled well, they will attack me by using nasty people they know who throw the nastiest scenario acts at me that depict someone down on their luck, and they throw gender insults at me. I know I look fairly decent and since I was stalked by a young guy I have received nothing but harassment from females who want to prove they are better and have been severely harassed by some really nasty guys those females know. Let me tell you, those people they know, oh my god, they look like they were just released from prison and I always wonder: oh my gosh these females know these people, people that normal folks would avoid totally.
@MeThePersonvWeThePrivileged
This issue is part of how privilege has collapsed all civilizations no matter what they PR it into and here is a piece of what I've found 6) There is a sense of urgency in this for six triagic reasons. One is mass murders and suicides, because the privileged, from my experience, are running to the inter- and intrapsychic game in addition to the traditional approaches to literally drive the disabled to suicide or to be a mass murderer. Can you imagine the stress to a severely disabled person with Attention Deficit Syndrome or other emotional or learning disability(ies) at even attempting to master employments or education if they are the chosen scapegoat in the family, business, school, or other community activity. It pretty much creates only one choice, to isolate. Number two is to filibuster out policies that are best for all people and the environment and to create even more chaos, to thwart better policy, by driving people to the third reason, to break the law at what appears to be epidemic levels and as such have committed at least some public relations resources including wide spread use of algorithms and robots to ensure that the inter- and intrapsychic harassments are classified as some metaphysical form of witchcraft in their efforts, which leads to the fourth reason, to eliminate the unprivileged's and the socio-politically challenged's efforts to create better policy one way or another even by death from my experience, murder by suicide. Witchcraft? Nothing could be further from the truth. It is a communication skill that almost everybody I know has used at one time or another but almost never talk about for fear of being thought of as crazy by the people insulating the privileged. Drawing on my own education, I have deduced that the skills in question were probably present when we were sea dwellers as more primitively functioning communication skills. Five is the most distressing evidence of the severity of this game-addiction to harass people inter- and intra-psychically, is the almost absent lack of soulful response to my own personal attempts at resolving these matters for my own personal safety, health and welfare, that of others or the environment. And they call the mass murderers pycho- or sociopaths. This is all leading up to the sixth reason. If the privileged and their hoard are permitted to classify inter- and intrapsychic communications as witchcraft, it can close a loophole that will disable individuals from suing them for the damages their robots, followers and algorithms create or create, especially the mass murders, enough new need for new litigation and laws which, like most laws, creates the same effect for most of us. They could do this years, decades, centuries in advance of there even being any laws to stop the inter- and intrapsychic abuses. They’ve already burned witches because of it but now they are afraid their old abuse of laws and religion won’t be enough. They've been burning me since before birth. Don’t think the media are trying to help. As almost every issue has been diluted by creating more privileged among each faction, it’s more like a bugle calling the privileged to up their game. Read the full scope abstract of the privilege's damage to the world and the solutions www.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/4934718620344562739/697887469923996719 There is another link from here to my ongoing full report.

The dynamic of a power imbalance most often finds the abuse coming from persons with higher position (and in the U.S. generally white and male, though not exclusively). Gender, gender identity, and race are the typical topics in "jokes" that the speaker may claim to be innocent, yet the object/punchline of the comment invariably bears the brunt, depicted in a derogatory, demeaning, or dehumanizing fashion. In political terms, the effect of tolerating this climate over time results in "pushing the Overton Window," where once-intolerable behaviors become less offensive. The Rush Limbaugh example of comments about the teenage Chelsea Clinton in porcine terms is a classic case, that briefly outraged some, yet set a new (lower) standard for responsible journalism which has over time gone much farther in relation to both respectful wording, and factual speciousness.
