Have to agree with the comments below, as a heavy Sketchup user myself the models look spot on, do you document using Layout as well? Quick question, how do we get the tray into an existing cavity wall? Can understand some lead flashing cut into the outer leaf and dressed down on the roof but how do you connect the tray internally?
Hi and thanks. Yes, I use Layout and think it’s a great companion to sketchup. To get the tray into an existing wall there are two ways, but both involve knocking out a few blocks/bricks of the outer leaf , working along from left to right…you can then insert your DPC into the course of the inner leaf, and fold into a tray bit by bit, but I prefer the preformed interlocking trays. It sounds a big job but it’s not. The tray edge sits over the lead flashing that goes out the roof abutment with weep holes above at every few perpendicular joints.

I just had experience of my first private building control and they signed off the footing trench from a single photo. Ok, so we had obviously done it to regs but it could’ve been a photo of any trench. Unbelievable

Could you please do a video on how much detail you tend to go into with it and how and where you source your details and implement them if thats at all possible. Im a huge fan of both sketchup and construction and hope to inplement that into a business some day, lots to learn of course but d love to see how you go about it. I made a video showing the basics of how I do it. Basically I model each individual element. So joists and sheet materials where I know their profiles. Doesn’t take long since they all repeat. Then I can quantify and make construction sections. I don’t understand your question about sourcing details? I made a video about the basics of my process here using a timber framed studio. @build-better-things Hi, thank you for getting back to me! I love your content and I've watched that video a few times now great video. It's the way I try to produce drawings so I'm glad I'm somewhat on the right page there. By details I mean do you use any reference sources like a technical detail/section when creating drawings or issuing for building regulations etc.
Actually I don’t. I studied building construction as an architecture student, and then it’s just become second nature since then. If I’m learning about a new product, I’ll go direct to the manufacturer and get them to send me their technical details. For example, there’s a video I did in on a roof we built, incorporating all the latest ventilation and fixing technology, I just figured it out from their details and put it into sketchup which in turn helped me price and then build it.
@build-better-things perfect that's more than fine way I'm doing it currently then I just wanted some clarity from someone who produces sketchup drawings and products similar to myself as I hadn't seen others do it the same way. Most common way I've seen is from a basic box out model and letting details make up for the lack of detail. Thank you for your reply once again its a great help. I love your content its brilliant.
Thanks a lot. Yes, few if any people do it the way I do for construction. In fact, @Thesketchupessentials has just put out a video about that very thing. Although I don’t agree with him, he’s got a great channel for learning sketchup and it proves you just use the software to suit your own needs. Best of luck.
