A single German pilot disappearing into the vastness of the Eastern Front is not difficult to imagine, even without the help of an NKVD pistol. I'm sure the same can be said for Airmen in the Pacific who went down in rugged jungle terrain.

In watching these, it amazes me how many heroic fliers beat incredible odds to simply die later in a weird "accident" or, in this case, simply disappear.

Heinz Wolfgang Schnaufer ..100+kills at night ....in an Me110 no less...killed in a freak traffic accident....The disappearance of Butch O'Hare flying Hellcat night fighter in (43?) is another strange one, I've read conflicting accounts....and Dick Bong, on a "routine" test flight....Shooting Star I think...sorry kinda went on a tangent there...

Lydia Litvyak....I think she is the most famous ace to have disappeared completely.... Last seen over the Kursk battlefield chased by several BF 109´s disappearing in the clouds. Never to be seen again. No body or wrackage was ever found.

Aircraft crashes are difficult to find often burying themselves deep in soft soil. A Brit pilot was found a few years back on a UK farm in a small actually tiny patch of thick trees and under growrh that no one had entered since before WW2. A pilot injured parachuting in remote areas had little chance of coming out alive.

Love videos like this, there are enough pilots that went missing to make 100 videos like this,Gunther Lutzow is a great example, last seen in combat in the revolutionary ME262 jet in combat against Thunderbolts, was never seen again ,just vanished, only days before the end of the war.

@@TJ3 the only one in your list that i didn't know about was Wagner probably because i specialize more on Luftwaffe pilots but that was a great story, had to go and research it,the fact someone went back (recently) and re researched his crash site and found more remains and found his high school ring is fascinating, lots of possibilities why it happened,he might have passed out from malfunctioning oxygen systems, that happened a lot back then etc, no telling, thank you for the video.

Very interesting, and nicely done ! I wish you would have included the disappearance of P-38 ace Lt. Col. Bob Westbrook Jr., USAAF. On 22 November 1944, he was last seen leading a strafing attack on a 140' Japanese gunboat that was escorting two freighters at Makassar Harbor in the Celebes Islands. He was with the 13th AF, and the Deputy Commander of the 347th FTR GRP. Westbrook was the highest scoring ace in the 13th AF, and is officially credited with destroying 20 Japanese aircraft. (all of them being air to air kills)

Eric Locke's fate sounds eerily similar to that of another RAF ace shortly after the Battle of Britain in which both pilots featured prominently. Canadian fighter pilot Willie McKnight flew Hurricanes during the battle of Britain and was one of RAF Captain Douglas Bader's most successful (albeit, unruly) proteges, scoring 17 kills plus a few shared and unconfirmed. On January 12th 1941 during one of those rhubarb raids off Calais he was caught down low by a BF109 and shot down over the channel. Neither he nor his plane were ever found. In his home town of Calgary, Alberta, Canada is a major route bordering the south end of Calgary international airport. Named after Willie, McKnight Blvd also has a flight museum featuring warbirds from both world wars, as well as a display dedicated to him.

Franciszek crashed in Cuddington Way, Ewell, Surrey on 8th October 1940 as he was returning to Northolt at the end of a routine patrol. The cause remains unexplained as no enemy aircraft were involved. Nor did he bale out as one might expect had his Hurricane suffered engine failure.

@@markcook4043 I've never before encountered the claim that Wick was a POW. I'm certain it's nonsense for a couple of reasons. First, he was shot down on November 28th. He was seen to bail out over the Channel. That's not a good time of year to be in the sea at the latitude at which he went down (around 50 degrees N). Second, the pilot who shot him down made his claim at 4:15 PM. Living close to the 50th parallel myself, I know that at that time and at that time of year, nightfall is not far off.

A dozen or so years after I met the man who eventually became my stepfather, I learned he had piloted a TBF Avenger in the Pacific. He got out there on USS Yorktown 6 months or so before the end of the war. He earned a DFC for an attack on IJN Tone in Kure harbor. DFC for "pressing his attack through heavy AA fire" according to the citation, and scoring two hits with two GP 500 pounders. (Easier to hit a ship moored in harbor, but harder to get at it due to AA defenses ringing the harbor, with preset calibrations for altitude). Howie finished the war in the Pacific when he was present at Tokyo Bay for Japans signing of the instrument of surrender. All the years I knew him, he didn't say a word until after I learned he had been a pilot and asked about it.
