Tony, I've been playing for over 50 years, and what you say makes more sense than most of what I see on the Net. I did not have the option of formal music training growing up. I had to figure it out by myself. It's nice to hear some of what I've discovered posed so concisely.

That "breaking the golden rule" pattern is like second nature for me after playing thrash metal for so many years. It's definitely good to keep it in mind as an alternative & to add dynamics to a song.

After wasting time this morning watching trashy videos I noticed the notifications lit up for this. That nice little Martin inspired me to get out my nice little Guild and now I'm pickin' and strummin' and that is a good thing. Thanks

I've been watching your videos for a while, the most important thing for me is the way you explain the process. I like to play rhythm guitar, after watching all your videos I hope I can play in the party, pub, etc. Lol. Thanks for the lesson.

I normally don't look at it with structure, because I can hear the pattern. But, I promised myself to do it by "The Book" this time. So the way you did it, fit perfectly, into what I've always done but added more structure. If that made sense. Just Thanks 👍

Good Stuff! Although, for the last example (using the "golden rule" to create your own pattern) you should have left a space for the unstrummed off-beats. Strumming them as you did, with no space, gives you a bar of straight 8th-notes in a 6/8 bar with weird picking directions. To clarify it should have been: 1-and-2-(space)-3-(space)-4-and

Thank you! This is really helpful, I’ve been trying to write a song kind of inspired off of Elliot smith’s “clementine”, (if you’ve heard it, you know what I mean by obscure chord changes and strumming). I wanted to find the right strumming pattern to make it unique, and bam! Here we are. So anywho, thanks :)

Hi Tony, thanks and nice lesson. May I suggest that for more value you could include after each strum pattern, a "use it in a sentence" type of example- play a bit of a sample song that the strum pattern fits well. Thanks for all that you do!
