My main thought is accountability. Even if it becomes as safe maybe even safer than a person driving the car, who becomes responsible if an accident occurs? The car manufacturer? The dealership? The person inside the car? The developer of the AI or algorithm used? If someone is killed in an accident, unlike before where a person could be held accountable, would somebody whos lost a family member, maybe a kid, be told “yeah sorry it was an accident, theres no compensation we can give”.

It's going to get more complicated but fortunately more complicated systems do exist and investigations are already carried out in a very different manner, I am talking about the aviation industry because airplanes themselves are such complicated machines and operate within a complicated systems that are managed by a large number of people at the same time so if an accident happens you cannot directly point fingers at the pilot like we normally do or think we should do instead each and every detail of the reason for the accident is investigated and recommendations are brought out that include changes in the avionics, Changes in management, changes in training, just to mention a few ...... With all of these being done it makes the flying of millions of unsuspecting commoners accross the world safe..... . Why I mentioned it? Because that's where we're headed with driverless cars there would be people sitting in RTC or road traffic control rooms who will issue traffic commands to the vehicle, if any accident occurrs it can be due to all the factors you mentioned and all of them will be investigated to see what needs to be changed

Apart from the first few years, driverless cars, will exist within a 'Transport as a service' model. No one (very few) will own a vehicle any more. They will simply order up the vehicle they need for whatever job they are doing. One person going into town for shopping? A tiny, one seater arrives for the 'in' journey and a similar car, but with a boot, pulls up to take you home. Need to take the kids to the beach? A five seater, duly presents itself. The few hours a day we need them and the cost of depreciation, fuel and insurance, will make taking personal, permanent ownership of any conveyance, seem eccentric, at the least.

In their testing they found that even if people were told they needed to monitor the car the majority of people wouldn't and were doing things like being on their phone or napping. This was in controlled situations with private testing so they knew that once the cars made it to public market there would be no way most people would monitor the car at all.

@@spyresoblazx duh. Yes. I'm not claiming automation as an advantage of cars over trains. I'm claiming that automation is a temporary advantage that trains used to, but no longer have, over cars. Once solved, automation has no incremental cost. Historically, automation and efficiency are the reasons it made sense to put hundreds of people on the same vehicle, and the same schedule, and to the same destination. Those advantages are disappearing. Given the same level of automation and efficiency, cars are better than trains, particularly for shorter distances, because they are more flexible and require less infrastructure.

I do worry about the reliability of them. If a taxi or uber driver crashes their car, they are responsible for any harm they cause you. Self driving car companies that expect you to be monitoring your car as it drives itself can push the blame on you for their own mistakes. This is most clearly the case with Tesla, where their cars will stop self-driving if they see an imminent crash. This allows Tesla to not have to be legally liable for the harm they cause if their cars fail.

@Seehart
@Seehart Год назад
That's not accurate. FSD does not disengage in reponse to an imminent crash. That was a myth started by some fudmongerer. Indeed, over the years, I have experiences two near misses caused by the other vehicle, where my Tesla responded skillfully and more quickly than I would have. One was Autopilot, which hit the breaks suddenly, after which I realized that the car in front of the car in front of me was screeching to a halt. Because of the early detection, my Tesla was able to perform a rapid but smooth deceleration. The other scenario was just a typical case of the other car changing lanes into their blind spot. FSD smoothly swerved to avoid the collision. In both cases, if Tesla had this mythological policy of disengaging on imminent colisions, things would have turned out differently. However, it is true that FSD beta is currently deployed as a level 2 system, as such, the human driver is fully responsible for monitoring and must take over immediately if necessary. This is very clearly communicated and unambiguous. In addition, FSD monitors the driver with a cabin camera to ensure they are watching the road, and requires frequent feedback to ensure the driver has contact with the steering wheel. All FSD drivers are aware of this responsibility, and if they forget, their FSD beta priveleges are temporarily revoked. That being said, it's been months since I've taken control for safety reasons, and during that time the software has greatly improved. As of the current release 11.4, I believe FSD is ready to start rolling out as level 3. This would mean the driver will no longer required to monitor the road and will not ever need to immediately take over. It also means that Tesla would be entirely liable for any accidents it causes. Obviously this rollout will be contingent on statistical proof that FSD is sustantially safer than human drivers, even when not monitored. Currently, FSD monitored by a human driver (as currently deployed) is several times safer than the average human driver alone (as measured by millions of miles per collision). Tesla also has data on number of miles per human intervention, and receives detailed telemetry and human feedback associated with these interventions. From this data, Tesla can predict when level 3 operation is safe. For example, if no interventions occur on a level 2 drive, then that drive could have safely been level 3.
@markreed9853
@markreed9853 Год назад
Tesla full self drive is only in beta at the moment, so the driver is liable as they need to monitor the vehicle as the beta program says. Once full self-driving is complete Tesla and the insurance will be liable not you, Elon has already said that. You will then be able to rent out your Tesla vehicle on the robotaxi network, but Tesla gets a commission it's in the contract for anyone buying a Tesla now! - I can see Tesla vehicles being able to drive themselves on most roads within five years, then probably another 5 years to get to near 100%. With a 8 cameras recording constantly, and data collected by the vehicle they can tell why the vehicle crashed, and who was at fault.

No one really talks about the real reason behind self driving cars and trucks. It's to get rid of human drivers all together in commercial driving roles. So think about Lyft and Uber or driving goods in semi tractor trailers across the country. You're talking about eliminating billions of dollars in costs for drivers. Lyft and Uber do not give a shit about their drivers. They care about profits for the shareholders. As soon as they can eliminate the drivers, they will.

Doing tests at level 4 catches headlines but in no way means we are close to widespread level 4 on the roads. The truth is there are complex legal and insurance issues, not to mention the safety issues arising from edge cases, that no one currently knows how to solve. Outside of sunny city streets where cameras perform well, it is doubtful that the current technologies would be able to operate at all in many common conditions and scenarios around the world. Factor in challenges in driver modelling and security vulnerabilities and you see the industry right at the beginning of where it needs to be, with many difficult challenges ahead. "Self driving cars are just around the corner"... people have been saying that for decades

The great thing about computers and AI, is they don't get road-rage, drunk, distracted, tired, etc. And just as air travel became safer once autopilot was integrated into commercial air travel, so has travel by motor vehicle gotten safer with the use of computers and AI.

Level 6 should be self driving on any backroad anywhere in the world. Level 7 should be off road navigation anywhere feasible for the vehicle’s capability, anywhere in the world. Level 8 should be it can take off and fly itself anywhere and land automatically. Level 9 should be it can take off, leave atmosphere to quickly go to the other side of the earth, and land automatically. Level 10 should be that it can take off, leave atmosphere, and engage FTL travel to visit any star system automatically, and land on any rocky planet or moon. This is my 10 level system, which I suppose also doubles as a Kardeshev scale of sorts.

The problem with Tesla is they called their level 3 system *"Autopilot"* and wealthy non technical people who bought their cars _assumed_ it was a level 5 system. You can be financially well off and still be _a complete idiot_ outside of your particular work speciality. And if you are arrogant you can have "Doctor Syndrome" and believe you're an expert on everything.

The current version of FSD beta is fully capable of level 3. I can confirm this because I have had zero interventions since receiving the latest FSD Update. Gradual rollout of level 3 is coming in the next few months or so subject to regulatory approval. The difference is just removal of the "nag feature" which requires the driver to demonstrate that they are ready to take over at a moments notice. Thus removal of this requirement constitutes level 3 because the driver will no longer be required to continuously monitor. Since Tesla has millions of FSD vehicles on the road, and is the only driving automation system that operates in all locations and conditions, it won't take very long to move on to level 4 and 5.

Want to propose a category 6 where we have the option to send the car out without us, like we've seen with taxi's, uber etc., In the testing. Cause I can also see the car being used like delivery drones to do pickup/drop off of family from work/school/medical appointments if the car owner/driver is elsewhere, pickup orders from stores/restaurants, pets being trained to be taken to areas to poo/play/sitters/walkers, sent to find affordable parking or back home after dropping you off so you dont have to pay$$$/walk far/risk break ins at high traffic/high crime areas.
