Not really, you need to build discipline, a work out is, as it’s stated on the name, work. It’s not “enjoy yourself” time, and most of the time it’s painful. So build discipline and do it anyway.
@88IrishEyes
@88IrishEyes 4 года назад
@@karladiaz9076 actually most people who are successful in their fitness journey will tell you it's habit, building a habit makes it easier to continue into your life style, and it's easier to make something a habit when you enjoy it, people who force themselves into restrictive eating and strict workouts very very rarely sustain results because it's unattainable. Workouts do not have to be 'work' I weightlift 5 days a week, because it's the exercise I enjoy

If you’re like me and you HATED running and walking on the treadmill for cardio, try dancing. I started just learning choreographies through RU-vid videos. I would record myself and then practice until I perfected the routine. I was a competitive cheerleader for a long time so I had good stamina, but just not for running. I hated just doing one thing and wanted to do more movement, have fun, and have the time fly by. With dance you can see your progress. You can see how good you get on picking up moves and the rhythm. I benefit from this because I am also a musician. Just this past week alone I have lost 3 lbs after a break from a broken foot. You can dance to literally any song and go at any pace you want. It works your whole body and it’s fun. I guarantee you’ll be sore the day after you start. I pair it with my strength training, but do something that you enjoy so that when you start cardio it doesn’t feel like your torturing yourself. Have fun and go crazy!

I don't understand why people say bodyweight exercises are totally ineffective. I lost 20kg and gained muscle through only doing a year of ballet classes several times a week. The most resistance involved at any point, in conditioning classes only, was a light theraband and 1lb dumbbells. I lift weights now, and my body looks different, but both activities are effective, in different ways, for different outcomes.

In regards to calories burned during strength vs cardio training - Yes, but after your cardio workout is done, since you’ve likely done very little muscle damage (torn muscle fibers that need to be rebuilt), you don’t burn any more calories. But when it comes to strength training, or any kind of workout where you’re really working on building muscles, yes you burn maybe fewer calories during the actual session, but then you continue to burn a greater number of calories over the next few days as your body works to rebuild that muscle tissue!! - I studied kinesiology, this is a very basic concept we learned. And it’s logical. So in the end YES strength training definitely burns more calories. It doesn’t have to be simply during the session.

I would love a video dedicated to the last 'myth'. I am a perfectionist, have OCD tendencies and have an all or nothing/black or white mentality when it comes to fitness and eating. This is such a major issue for people and I think many people would benefit from hearing about it. I have the mentality of success or failure, there is no in-between. For example, I will have a great meal plan for the day, but I "fuck up" by eating something that my mind will consider to be unhealthy (cake, chocolate, chips/crisps etc.) Then my mind will be like "well, you already failed, you did not stick to your meal plan, you might as well keep eating shit." That causes me to spiral and I cannot get back on track. I continue to eat unhealthily, I binge eat large packets of chips/crisps. This can last a couple days, a couple weeks or months. or another example is, I skipped a workout for whatever reason, my mind will go back and say that I have failed, so might as well don't bother for the rest of the week, the month or however long it takes me to get back on track. I started my fitness journey at 78kg, lost 20kg and was at 58kg. I got a really bad cold and chest infection, which left me unable to breathe without coughing for 5 weeks. Because of my sickness, I had "failed". The success or failure mentality lead to extreme binge eating, days where I "couldn't be bothered" getting out of bed. Crying hysterically because I am a "failure" and I am "fat" and "ugly". It has taken me 7 months to get back on track. IT WAS ALL MY MENTALITY. My mindset and mentality were completely damaging my progress. This is an extreme issue that I would love for you to discuss on your channel. I honestly believe so many people would benefit from learning about this topic.

I went through something similar. I was training solely for aesthetic and for the image it gave to other people of me. (Being fit, healthy, attracyice, talented, etc) I started hating going to the gym so much I took a couple months off in the fall and then fell sick with pneumonia in the beginning of December. It ended up being around 6 months completely off from the gym. It took me all that time to get to a reasonable place mentally where I can train to feel good for myself instead of training to make myself look good to others. Now I’ve just started the physical part or retraining and being at a new starting point. I think this type of things happens to a lot of woman and reminding ourselves that we are beautiful and worthy no matter what helps us to channel positive energy and self love into our workouts. I’m on that mental journey with you and I’m sending you love 🤍 it’s good to I’m not alone in that way of thinking

I've definitely felt like this before, tried to make myself sick many times (because I binged or thought that I wasnt like enjoying what I was eating so there was no point, I was literally just eating fat and thought I've f**ked it all up, I sometimes still feel like this, especially when I've taken a couple of rest days off), and saw food as just calories and numbers. I've started eating healthier now tho and doing it so my body gets all the nutrition it needs and ive been exercising to help my body build strength and generally to be healthy! I still limit my food and wake up like hungry but I'm definitely better than before.After I've had my lows there will always be highs x

I used to spend so many hours at the gym doing cardio, I used to be a marathon runner... but honestly, the changes that made my body look good really came from lifting weight. It takes to much less time at the gym and looks good. Of course, that I also have developed a healthy diet over the years too, with little sugar, lots of dark green vegetables and lean meats. I WISH I hadn't spent so many years on a treadmill. Also - I stopped doing weights for about a year, I did vinyasa yoga 3-4x week. I loved it, I can now do pushups, I have so much control over my body/core/meditation - but I lost muscle on my butt/legs/back. One month back in the gym, and the definition is also back.

Regarding the cardio vs weightlifting debate: you have to take into consideration that after the workout your heart rate stays up for longer with weightlifting, which burns more calories. Additionally, muscle growth is greater when you train with weights and to sustain muscle growth, the body has to use up calories Still, I think the difference between the two is marginal at best. Just do, whatever feels right to you👍🏻 After all, doing something will always be better than doing nothing🤷🏻‍♀️
@Taaaah2010
@Taaaah2010 4 года назад
the whole elevated heart rate after working out thing is true but it is also not that big of a deal. it is estimated that that extra post workout "burn" is only 6-15% of how much you burned while working out. so if you burn 500 calories doing intense weight training that would mean that the EPOC would represent an extra burn of 75kcal at best, which is really not that much

This is my favorite video that you’ve done. Super informative. I used to do heavy weights and little cardio at the gym 5-6 days a week, eating healthy and it didn’t seem to work much for me. But I did it because everyone else said it would make me lean and I would lose weight and look better and my body did not change as I wanted it to. I started doing body weight/HIIT/ yoga exercises from home and the results are exactly what I’ve been looking for. I can see toned muscle and I’ve lost fat and extra weight. Just like you said, the fact that nothing happened for me at the gym made me quit for months. I felt discouraged. But- I’ve been working out from home now for about 3 months 6 days a week and my life is changed. It’s going with something you can see yourself doing forever, not just the short term.

Love your comment. I remember in my 20s, before all this crazy information overload time we are living in, I would simply do exercise videos at home. Wasnt concerned with whether I lifted or not because as we know "that is the answer to all our problems"🙄 as soon as I started looking for more and more information, first by googling, then by seeing what others were doing on Instagram, that was the beginning of my extreme confusion and discontent with what I was doing. Never got the results I wanted and many times I did things I didnt enjoy. I'm older now, late 30s and I stopped looking for the next best workout, structure, etc.. I simply got tired of it all. I still go to the gym and I still lift but now I do it more for health. I see younger girls who I can tell are obviously copying Instagram workouts and I feel bad for them. In some ways I think this is the worst time to "learn" about fitness and health overall.

I think functional training can’t be ignored... if you don’t use it you lose it. We should be training in all planes of motion with and without load. That includes rotation, front to back, side to side... all in all, exercise is necessary to be healthy and move well. Some is better than none. Smart training is better than average unfocused training 👍🏼💪🏼

I have just recently discovered you, Abby, I have to say two things: First, you explain things very well and I like how educated you are, plus the fact that you can "reflect" on the previous affirmations/videos. And secondly, YOU ARE SO RIGHT, overthinking does not help at all, overthinking only messes with you. this happened to me, I was in great shape, and then everything fell apart. I stopped listening to all the podcasts and audiobooks on how to improve myself, and suddenly I started to be back on track, more sustainable more mentally healthy for ME. So as long as I am happy, everything is good. Now, I would like to ask you, have you ever had to deal with the loss of period during your journey? Would you make a video reflecting on the downsides of losing fat too fast? i.e quick transformations etc. This had happened to me, and it drove me mental, I think is a great subject, I read the Women's book (don't know if you heard of it) and it gives GREAT scientific research. Cheers!

Thank you for mentioning that any activity is better than no activity. and that END PART. More is not better!! I spent a lot of time getting SO caught up in all these myths and what they meant for me until I realized that I should be exercising for fun, and eating what makes me feel good, so that I can live longer and happier. As someone with a plethora of hobbies, interests and other things going on in her life, it's so nice to sit down to a video that talks about exercise as something to slow down with and just enjoy for the sake of living a healthy, active life-- not something to perfect and micromanage. Focusing on health above all is so important and I wish more people talked about that online tbh. Thank you Abby!

I’ve found that I love weight lifting because I’m lazy and I can take breaks and I don’t feel like dying the whole time. I hate cardio and before when I tried to focus on cardio I’d give up after a few weeks because I just didn’t enjoy it. But now I find myself excited to go to the gym. So, I think the thing that works is what you enjoy. Once working out really becomes part of my weekly routine for several months, I will try to add more cardio in there but for now, I’m proud of myself for even going to the gym multiple times per week.

Excellent video Abby! You hit on everything I was searching to find today! I’ve been seeing great results weight lifting + nutrition focused + some cardio sprints (10minx2 weekly + 30-60liss cardio X2more weekly) I’ve dropped about 40lbs of body fat and gained a lot of muscle from what it feels like. 162 to about 130lbs and muscle replaced some fat) I have my 14th wedding anniversary in 4 weeks. I decided to try a mini cut to lose about 5-8lbs of body fat in order to look a little more defined in the dress I bought to wear. I’ve restricted my caloric to 1400 instead of about 2000 and upped my cardio to every day. I’m only a few days in so I can’t testify to results yet but I am miserable. I am hungry and I am tired. I was starting to think I just am not eating enough and maybe too much cardio when I thought about going twice today just to speed things up. Then I came across this video. Little changes seem to be the way to go as this intense may be vaulting things and giving me even less results before my anniversary? I am kind of torn on what to do. On one hand I feel like 3-4 weeks of pushing myself might give me results and not hinder since it wouldn’t be long term but maybe not? Wish I knew but your intel makes me think I’m doing it for nothing and will just go into starvation mode? 😩 anyways. Wish I would see more uploads from you! We all miss you! -love from Las Vegas!

Abby’s videos are so great and full of truth! I will have to say as a surgeon and women’s health expert, I’m about 99% sure she had her breasts augmented. As fit as she is, she would not be able to have that much fat on her chest. And it’s absolutely okay to change your body to however you want it to look like. That doesn’t take away from her expertise on these topics. I just feel it’s important for other viewers to know that her body comes 95% from insane discipline but a also from augmentation.

If you’re following a strength or hypertrophy based program and you add in a ton of cardio which is endurance training you will see less gains then if you follow a only a strength / hypertrophy program. However, it’s debatable how much cardio actually causes this effect. If you enjoy cardio and you aren’t over training I would encourage you to continue to do it. However, certain types of cardio use different types of muscle fibers so short bursts of cardio such as sprinting or intense HIIT will cause a greater number of bulkier looking muscle fibers than distance running/cycling. If you want to support your more full muscular look I’d recommend those types of cardio 😊 - Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science 🧪

I was struggling with my look overall since middle school, I was always sporty, did everything in school and then I gained more weight I don't even know when it happenned as I was always super skinny kid but everything went down from there. But because I was always a sporty person I started doing workouts which didn't work, my eating habits got worse then I went studying at university and the first year was still the same then I got gym membership and started lifting but my body wasn't changing I felt so defeated and after that I decided to finally go to some classes with more people. I went for boxing because that was always lowkey my dream to go back to martial arts (I did judo as a kid) and that is what got me looking better but more importantly feeling better. I love going to my boxing and now also kickboxing classes, I love being around people and hyping eachother up and I just love it. I do what I love and it actually helps me finally both physically and mentally. I still have a way to go to the look I am striving for but because other people see the difference and I do as well I feel confident in what I am doing.

Check first your pelvic floor is totally recovered before lifting weights! You can start with low cardio so you don't hurt yourself and then add up intensity, then go for the weights Idk, better check with for doctor or personal trainer
@rakong246
@rakong246 4 года назад
Ideally, you might want to do a mix of both. Cardio will not give you a lean, lifted bum. Only resistance training will (whether it be body weight/banded or with weights). If you do do both then you should also space your training so that your cardio doesn't impede your resistance training gains (minimum 12 hours apart). Other than this, my advice is to do what you know you can continuously do. It is truly consistency that is key more than any particular type of workout.

You are so right about too much noise in the industry. I'm in my 60's and relatively healthy. I have two issues that are endemic to my age group, posture and muscle mass loss. So I embarked on a journey of doing Pilates and selected the Convict Conditioning program to deal with muscle mass. Bodyweight is much much safer than weight lifting so I chose that route, besides, bodyweight is closed kinetic chain exercise and that is proven to be much safer from injury than open kinetic chain exercise. And just like you said, you see a vid on Crossfit or body building or whatever and it plants a seed and then whamo boomo, I'm off experimenting on something totally interrupting my progress and gains. So thank you for your practical advice, your logical advice, your rational advice. Keep up the good work kiddo and thank you.

I've always heard that cardio burns more calories than weightlifting, not the opposite. I've never heard the "myth". Interesting! Thanks Abby!
@justanother2433
@justanother2433 4 года назад
The "myth" is not that weightlifting burns more calories, but that weightlifting helps you loose fat better than cardio. And that is true in my books, because you body adapts quite quickly to cardio and become efficient at eg running and sends an overall signal to the body, that it needs to be efficient with the calories you intake. If you only do cardio to loose weight you will most likely end up loosing weight (includes fat and muscle), but then the calories you eat for loosing weight will end up being your maintenance calories, so you have to eat even less and end up in a downward spiral. When you lift weights on the other hand your body will still adapt, but not only can you step up the intensity easier (by applying progressive overload) your body will want to build muscle to adapt to that new signal by lifting weight, so you will loose much more fat than muscle, when you loose weight. So you won't end up in that downward spiral of restricting your calories.

In my experience, only training my back muscles didn't completely correct my posture. What made a bigger difference was building good core muscles with doing planks and also deadlifting and running! All of these exercises require you to keep your core tight and helped me with my anterior pelvic tilt. Of course I also had a lot of tightness in front of my shoulders so upper back workout was necessary as well.

I've never heard someone describe that flaw so well, and I ABSOLUTELY have the same issue! There's a song lyric that says "a morbid fascination with all things in extremes" and I may as well get it tattooed on my forehead, because I'm so damned all or nothing about everything. Fitness/diet is one of the BIGGEST things I struggle with because of that. You really can derail your entire freaking plan just because you heard someone say something that made you think what you are doing isn't right or the best way to do things. Perfectionism...it's a blessing and a curse! Thank you for talking about that. It helps a lot to hear it from someone else, especially someone like yourself who has managed to work around it!

As a coach, I only ever recommend weight training if there is a muscle imbalance or strength deficiency. There's a reason why certain professionals like Lebron James aren't roided up hulks. They've got the necessary muscles to boost them in their sport period. And as a sports coach, I don't ever recommend just getting big because it negatively impacts agility and flexibility needed in many sports. The way to approach this muscle vs fat is that the fact that more muscle mass = more calories burned is a nice side effect, not the primary focus. It just happens to burn a little more.
@ryanfeeley2407
@ryanfeeley2407 4 года назад
Smart on you for doing the math. There is also a huge difference between fat burning and fat loss. Too many people complicate stuff with crap about a "fat burning zone" and similar garbage. Strength training is wonderful, but there're a lot of other ways to train.

However I do keep up with a lot of research and dietary stuff, etc etc. I'm at the point now where I say I know TOO MUCH because I get all "deer in headlights" when I try to organize my fitness or nutrition goals from just information overload. Its also damaged me so badly trying to follow the research where after trying Keto for a bit for health reasons and then stopping, I had to re-train my brain to say that an orange IS OKAY TO EAT. It is HEALTHY even though its far too high in carbs for keto. Its a real fuck-y place to be in.

Short rest period between sets, when paired with opposing or different muscle group exercises, such as a cable crunch superset with a GHR is a way to be more efficient in the gym, and also can be used as a means of progression for hypertrophy training over time. Intensity techniques, such as decreasing rest periods and super sets, can drive muscle hypertrophy 🔥

Thank you for myth #3! I cannot lift weights anymore due to my lax joints. I either pull my shoulders out of their sockets or, because my shoulders sit so shallow in the sockets, it pulls on my trapezius too much and I end up with strained neck muscles and a migraine for days. I love body weight exercises as this is all I can handle. I’m 96lbs and any dead lifting kills me. I can’t even carry heavy objects. I was holding a 2lb dumbbell in my hand and put my hand on my hip and now I’m dealing with a 3+ month injury because that dislocated my shoulder and then ended up with an impingement. So all these muscular people saying to lift weights makes me feel defeated since I can’t. I’m so flat that I need to gain some shape (and weight) just for my confidence. (Im tired of being called anorexic.) I would love to get a butt! Any standing exercise recommendations would be awesome since I can’t even do a tabletop plank right now because I’m not supposed to put weight in one arm until my shoulder heals. I have all these cute crop tops that I would love to wear but I end up wearing loose and long tops to cover my flat butt :’(

Weight lifting burns more calories than cardio because you continue to burn calories after you are done with the session. It elevates your metabolism for a longer period of time post workout. Wish she had addressed that aspect. Obviously you could work harder with cardio than weightlifting and therefore still burn more with it but the studies do show that weightlifting results in more net calories being burned. I'm not talking about massive changes. Just like if you burn 200kcal running for an hour and 160kcal resistance training for an hour you will burn an additional 60-120kcal after the resistance training session from the raised metabolism which will cause your net expenditure to be higher than with cardio.

Hi! I have a question, I trust you but I’m confused from hearing so many different things about weight loss from people, just need something cleared up! You said the myth is “weightlifting is better for fat loss than cardio” but started to mention which burns more calories.. but isn’t weight lifting better in the long run to burn fat because you build muscle which helps you to eventually burn more calories at your resting metabolic rate which then helps you to maintain weight loss? Pls help! I’m so confused and never know what to focus on to lose weight/burn fat

dora tanasoiu What you should retain from this is that you should make sure you’re running on a calorie deficit for weight loss.

I have a BS in Exercise Science so i thought i would answer your question some! Weightlifting is definitely a very important factor for weight loss because you are correct, lifting increases muscle mass which increases your RMR. When you lift you are in a way replacing the excess fat in your body with muscle, which is a leaner tissue, allowing you to lean down and burn more calories at rest. In my opinion, you should always include both weight lifting and cardio into your workout plan because both have so many different benefits and basically every study have shown that a combo of both types of exercise is superior to just doing one or the other for your overall health. Weight training is an excellent tool for weight loss and for keeping the weight off, however, if you also want to lean out the muscle that you are building cardio is a great way to do that because it is training the different muscle fibers. A calorie deficit is important for weight loss, however, there is such a thing as eating too little and ruining your metabolism, so you need to make sure that you are eating a sufficient amount of calories in order to keep up with your workouts while also being in a slight deficit (working out and weight lifting will allow you to still be in a deficit while also eating more than you would otherwise). Additionally, upping your protein intake is an essential part of losing weight, and building muscle from your workouts (you should typically be eating about 1g of protein per pound of body weight each day or a little less). Make sure that you are fueling your body correctly before and after each workout and that you are really pushing yourself with each workout and progressively increasing the weight you are lifting every couple weeks in order to see results. Typically, you want to workout for 150 minutes/ week upping it to 300 min/week (of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise) to really see results. Really focus on these things and you should be able to lose weight and eventually it will become a new habit and being in a constant deficit wont be necessary for maintenance!

Girl yesssss!!!! Love you and I’m at this place on my journey. I just started training on my own after having a trainer for 2 yrs. it’s a big difference doing it alone but a good journey of discovering how to train alone without outside motivation. With that being said I have been overwhelmed by all the advice and recently stopped seeking it. Your video is definitely confirmation that I’m on the right path. Thanks for being awesome !
