Hi Lock Noob, it reminds me of something I saw over 60 years ago ( I've never tried it, but it did work ... I think! ) A friend of my boss, at the time, said he could open a padlock with candle wax. We arranged a time, the padlock was produced, and checked by my boss to see that everything was above board. He heated the wax to liquid, poured it into the keyway, inserted the blank, and let it set. He then removed and heated the key blank with a flame and inserted it into the lock. He removed it a couple of times, using the tip of the blank to turn the plug. All of a sudden the plug turned and the padlock opened. The reason ... if you can believe it - the hot blank heated the key pins to the point the wax holding them allowed them to drop, leaving the driver pins stuck above the shearline. Turning the plug with the tip of the key opened the padlock. True story.
@idkidk4334
@idkidk4334 Год назад
That sounds like that would actually work
@penfold7800
@penfold7800 Год назад
More likely, in that case, the key blank pushed all the pin stacks to nearly above the sheerline and the wax just acted as packing to push those pin stacks completely above the sheerline. Essentially the same principle as with 'comb picking'

I want to comment on the acid part of the video: from what it looks like it might be hyaluronic acid and it's used as a cosmetic product to make your skin smoother and such. I don't use it myself but my gf does and she has a bottle exactly like that one, the liquid has the same colour and even the dropper looks the same. It is technically acid but if you can put it on your skin don't expect it to melt a lock lol.

I have spent way too many hours watching their content, and laughing at most of it. This does nothing to promote good practice for the lock sport community, and as you said, in some instances may be dangerous. But they will continue to churn out fake videos, and rake in the cash at the end of the month. Your comment on why they wanted to get through the door had me in stitches :)

The whole concept of what they are doing is totally ridiculous. like you say the worst of this is people might actually try this on other peoples locks and damage them, maybe even cause a fire. I just read Brian Hignett's comment about wax opening a lock. I can't see it working at all, in fact you could use that cheap padlock you tried to set on fire in this video.

It's a combination of clickbaitery, conspiracy and gullibility that seems to draw people in. I can picture it now. "Lock secrets THEY don't want you to know". Do you think the acid would have worked in one of those weird plastic core locks?
@chemistrykrang8065
@chemistrykrang8065 Год назад
Unlikely. Most plastics don't react with acids. It is possible to get this to work with metal, given sufficiently concentrated acid... but I can't imagine a situation where there isn't a safer, more convenient, and less messy way in.

5 Minute Crafts better have some top notch legal aid on tap. If children watch that vid and try to emulate those 'tricks' there's going to be injury and, hopefully, lawsuits. You're doing a service here Ash, pointing out that stupid, destructive, hacks like the ones shown by 5 Minute Crafts don't work and aren't lockpicking. There is a liquid that does actually eat through locks: Gallium. That said, there probably is an acid-based formula for producing a reaction with brass, but it would likely involve a catalytic reaction between Two acid bases. Maybe the chemists out there can oblige. Maybe with the two picks 'pick' they were doing they were using one of the picks as a turning tool. I know that I do actually use just ONE pick from the goso set to pick cheap wafer locks by jiggling it up and down whilst twisting it at the same time. Finally, the idea of using expanding foam to force a door catch out of its keeper in the door frame could work, but it would be much easier to use the inflatable rubber mats designed for use when leveling for fitting doors. I see this type of video as deliberate misinformation aimed at people who are stupid enough to think they can go out and attack any in-use lock they choose. As is the case with many 'masked magician' methods, the actual method mostly used is much simpler than the one demonstrated.
