Welcome Imperial citizens to the second installment of "5 Minutes Of Heresy" featuring the dreaded masters of siege warfare, the Iron Warriors! Today we will be examining a new painting technique for tackling metallic armor, as well as discussing a rather controversial aspect of the 4th Legion's war-gear. This will be a long "5 Minutes" but consider it a generous double-shot of Heresy from your friendly heretic hunting bartender Inquisitor Nero!
Be sure you subscribe to the channel, and let me know which legion you want to see featured next and why it should be the Dark Angels 😂.

I seem to vaguely remember a line in some Horus Heresy book, just before the outbreak of the Heresy, as they are in the process of equipping everyone (who are loyal to Horus) with the "new" Mk IV maximus armour, that the Iron Warriors actually prefer the older Mk III, not just for the extra protection from the front, but because it LOOKS imposing. Although by the time of the Siege of Terra, attrition had taken its toll, and the Iron Warriors, just like all the Legions, were using anything they could get their hands on - I still think they liked the Mk III the best.
@inquisitornero
@inquisitornero Год назад
If you figure out the name of the book please let me know as I'd like to read it -- not just for the armor debate but because the Iron Warriors are one of my favorite legions. While I still haven't changed my MK II stance, I think it is without a doubt that the legion preferred "heavier" armor marks like MK II and III. You are 100% correct that by the Siege of Terra the legions couldn't afford to play favorites with their war gear. By that particular battle I think everyone was operating outside established legion doctrine. What I find interesting about the line from the book is that it suggests that the Iron Warriors not only consider the utilitarian side of conventional warfare, but also the psychological aspects as.well. They understand or feel that marines rocking up to fight in MK III looks fearsome and therefor can provide a tactical advantage. Thinking on the 4th legion further, they do consider the advantages of waging psychological warfare campaigns against an enemy -- I'd have to dig up examples, but they certainly exist. This is something I think a lot of people over look because legions like the Night Lords, Alpha Legion, and the Emperor's Children usually dominate those conversations. Anyway, great points you've added to the conversation. Iron Within comrade!

What an amazing and fun watch! I agree, IW would for sure use more MK2 armour for regulars, MK3 or custom MK2 for Breaching actions or operations and MK4 for Commanders and Elite squads. Very nice. Will use this for my army. Iron Within!

From what I heard it was mark 3 that was easier to repair then mark 2, since mark 2 has all those ridges on them making it a lot harder to fix then the solid frontal plates of the mark 3. Keep in mind I don't have any proper sources for this, so take it with a grain of salt. Considering how close quarters combat can be very common in siege warfare, from fighting in a trench or storming the halls and bastions of a fortress, I would say the 4th would prefer mark 3. And as a staunch IW fan, saying anything different is heresy, or maybe reverse heresy cause Chaos. IDK, if I try and think about it to hard my brain starts to hurt. Either way great video. Never watched painting tutorials before since I am just into the lore, never got into tabletop. But since Vox recommend you, it was my favorite legion and you did a really good job on the model, it was well worth the watch.
@inquisitornero
@inquisitornero 2 года назад
Thanks for the watch and kind words! Vox's crew is always welcome over here in Nero's realm. Ya the MK II and III debate is a highly debated one, but that's part of the fun. Before I began the project I was in the MK III boat, but my opinion changed as I got deeper into the lore, tactica of the Legion, and research into siege warfare. I totally agree that in a standard siege (if there is such a thing), for the initial breech, it's up to a small elite core of MK III guys to create the "breech" as establish a foothold. That would then be supported by a tidal wave of more standardized troops in MK II, but thats my take 😉. It's probably a 50/50 split of for and against both sides of the MK II / MK III question if I had to guess. Whatever the case, happy you enjoyed the video and left a comment! I'm glad I could be your first painting video, that's pretty cool. You should try a game of Kill Team just to get your feet wet and see if you like the tabletop side of things. It's more fast paced and you only have a small number of models to handle (I prefer the smaller skirmish games as opposed to the typical mass battle 40k matches). It would be cool to get another 4th Legion fan involved in the tabletop. You could easily score an intro game in any of the GW stores, just ask the manager, they usually have a certain day of the week set aside for introduction games. Iron Within, Iron Without!

Historically segments of armor is alot easier to repair since is a small piece to replace than a larger single piece. it is why majority of medieval soldiers preferred to buy brigandine over full plate cuirass, was cheaper on resources and easier to repair

@inquisitornero
@inquisitornero 2 года назад
Thank you so much, they are definitely in the queue and I'll certainly try and do them justice. From what I know about them at current, they are one of those legions who's color scheme changes the closer you get to the Siege of Terra much like the Sons of Horus (see my other video on them). So I would say how they are painted depends on where they are in the timeline -- but I would need to look into them a little more. The Horus Heresy tabletop game is at its core a "historical miniatures" game unlike 40k. So it comes down to the player's choice with what story they are trying to tell. Lemme ask you this, which armor scheme do you prefer? The blue shoulder pauldrons with the white armor OR the red shoulder pauldrons with the white armor?

They are definitely on the list! They are a very fun Legion -- they make me want to listen to Manowar haha. I will also be doing the Luna Wolves as well. The trick is going to be making the white armor look different with each marine. I have some ideas brewing, but I'd want the Scars to be something special.

Agree with you in regard to the use of mark 2. I have only seen one official art piece that has depicted an IW in MK3- it was a heavy support unit from a forge world book? The majority of 30k art shows them in MK2. I think realistically, mark 3 gets associated as the mark 3 kit is the most easily aquired kit for hobbyists. Having also deep dived into the lore, I think it's worth mentioning that Mark 3 was made in a response to dealing with squats intially; for me I consider the MK 3 a variant of the MK2, and was more situational in it's usage, (mark 2B would be a good description of mark 3) rather than a complete overhaul like the MK4 for example. MK3 is like one of the special suits of armour we see Iron Man use.
@inquisitornero
@inquisitornero Год назад
100% agree on the points above -- and the Iron Man analogy is a solid one. I also think people see the word "iron" in the armor mark name and think that the "iron" warriors must use MK III because....words I guess haha. Ya from what I've seen and read, MK II is the most suited to the tactics of the iron warriors. MK III (or MK IIB as you put it -- I like that btw) in my opinion doesn't have the versatility needed when conducting a siege, not to mention the fact that those suits were harder to repair. Sure you'd have breacher and heavy support units equipped in MK III suits, however the ever changing battlefield conditions in siege warfare require something more versatile. Some would then beg the question why not use MK VI suits? Well simply put, while they afforded the wearer greater mobility, they do not offer the protection required for the brutal nature trench/siege warfare. I think that a lot of people overlook just how much the legions character and their approach to warfare dictated their use of what war-gear rock up in. Possibly an interesting subject to tackle in a future video 😏. Anyway, excellent points made. The Inquisitor concurs with your assessment!
