Good for you! Finally a RU-vid that doesn’t apologize to people for their rudeness! It’s called having a healthy boundary. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy your channel.
I’m a recent subscriber and feel like I just found a treasure in you! Love that you also emphasize inner beauty and warmth. (Binge-watching your videos lately!) Good for you on setting reasonable boundaries. If people are unhappy, they can look elsewhere.
Hi Kay! This was a great video! I am so excited that I found you, to have caring women that could give quality information on how to walk through our older years! Thank you! Thanks for speaking the truth in love and pressing on with the mission the Lord has given you! Thanks for using your gift!
I am 62 years old, live in Tucson AZ, and have been dressing mostly to be invisible, wearing oversized clothing to hide the extra weight. I loved fashion in college, and thanks to your encouragement, I am feeling and looking so much better! I can be creative about what I'm wearing, without feeling like I am trying to look younger than I am. You are skilled, but you are compassionate and good humored as well. You are teaching many lessons beyond fashion--it has meant a lot to myself and a dear friend I shared your channel with--thanks again.
Hi! Here I go late to the party again, but I still made it🎉 You aren't alone w the weight! I tell ppl I create an optical illusion every day! You're absolutely right you can be creative! I do it all the time 😂 I keep my basic colors for skirts/pants (black, brown, navy, grey) for my body shape. Then I invested in some mid length type lightweight throw on light jackets or flowy sweaters to 'slim me down' then I could just find a wrap type top or light shell underneath. That way as I started my exercise regime, I could just replace the classic/timeless item & incorporate some fresh items. Re: the exercis regime: no gyms for me. I started walking the halls of my school during lunch and specials when the kids aren't in the halls (I work in the front office so I don't have classes, but I do it when they're less likely to be in the halls); I switched out sweeeet tea for green tea sweetened w a tsp of honey and orange slices, switched out the potato chips for carrot & apple slices. I do low salt chips and they are Great (Lays Poppable are also low sodium and ALL NATURAL. I get them on BOGO🎉) I replaced soda w water w lemon and cucumber slices (SO REFRESHING!). I also invested in a little foot pedaler for when I'm proofing transcripts at home. I also start my day w stretches while I do my affirmations to set the tone for my day. Take care of face/mouth essentials, then start to get down about 16 oz of water. I then do my original stairs master by going up/down my stairs (I have 7 on the lower level) for 3-5 reps. I have some .25-.50 strap weights I use. I alternate between the stairs and my twistyturny board (it was on Shark Tank but I found mine for $10--gotta LOVE a bargain 😂). As my body weight changes, I just replace the larger sizes w a smaller size in the same basic color. But I don't just have three/four colors (of course,) but they are the staples until my weight stabilizes. I also find a tank dress is flattering on most sizes of women esp when paired w a light summer throw or light cardigan that falls mid hip. I also have shear embellished jackets for evenings out or special events. If I 'outgrow' one, I've always been able to find a replacement. Tanks are a classic that won't ever be outdated. Start just walking around the outside of your home three times a day for at least a week and see what else you can do to get regulated. We're not all meant to be the same size, but we are meant to be healthy. ~Best wishes to you.
Great tips. I gave up make up 2 years ago and haven't looked back. I consider it progress that I am comfortable in my own skin. Tinted lip balm and out the door.
I really liked your point about rather than thinking "does this make me look too young" instead, think "does this make me look MODERN" . Such a more positive way to think about our clothing and accessories selections.
LOVE these tips. I was in such a style rut until I began watching capsule wardrobe videos. I am not buying anything new right now, but seeing how to put an outfit together like you said with the classic clothing, jewelry, and shoes that don't look frumpy really helps me to make an effort to look like I tried anyway! 😀Thank you!
Just listening to your soft voice and your smile makes me feel happy!!! I am 68 years old, but people think I am 55. Exercise, eating healthy and less medication intake is what makes you feel young. I believe in smiling, looking happy, wear bright, cheerful colors and remember enjoy life to the fullest.
I have watched soooo many of your videos and I want to thank you so much. I am a “young” 74 yr. old and my fashion has changed so much because of your guidance....some of your clothes suggestions are outside of my price range, so I look for similar items in my price range and it works!
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and hand to heart - it's been life changing. I came for the tips and stayed for your beautiful smile and positivity. Thank you for doing this for us. I have a much clearer direction on how to dress comfortably but with some style and not break the bank.
Kay, I am so happy to have found your channel. What a breath of fresh air. I love the ideas you present about being modern rather than youthful. Yes! I tend to be frumpy at times. You are encouraging me to try to be a little more modern. Thanks so much. I will follow your channel to get other tips. I also loved the video you did on disguising the tummy.
Great tips ! I a 1963 model! I am having huge hair issues! Trying to grow out a bit! Just so it will be easy, however I am still getting the foils every 5 weeks! I really want to go Gray! I will look through your videos to see if you have one! Thankfully I have always had a great skin care regimen! Also have my daddy’s skin, oval face with great high cheekbones! Thanks to my 82 year old daddy! Love from Georgia ❤️
I just went today and bought myself 4 pairs of beautifully fitted pants (classics... Jeans, Khaki, black dress pants, & gray dress pants ) plus 3 new tailored tops. I didn't spend a fortune. I found them all on sale at Wal-Mart at $9-13 each piece! I needed them so bad. I've been wearing the same 3 pairs of baggy jeans for 2 years. I'm done putting myself last. Haircut just 2 weeks ago too. I'm determined to start taking care of me!
Less is more for hair is so true! About 12 years ago I read in More Magazine that modern hair had less lift on top. I am also 56 and because of 80’s hair training I focused on getting lift in the crown of my hair. After I read that advice a light bulb turned on and it made a positive difference. Great advice on this video!
Yes, that has been a really hard shift for me. And I think that’s the case for a lot of us. But it’s so true that modern hairstyles are much less lifted and more free flowing. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Hi, yes, at only 52 I can most definitely hold my hands up to being guilty to at least two of these!, ....but , since watching your videos I have made a concerted effort to gently pull myself up out of my rut and to look at myself with a much more positive point of view. I have begun to go down the route of swapping more of my tops for solid colours and changing busy floral tops for ditsy prints. I have looked at the neutrals in my pared down wardrobe and picked those that compliment as many pieces as possible. I am trying to include the odd modern touch here and there such as white trainers and a denim jacket and I am growing my hair out into a more relaxed look. I would never have gone down this route without your amazing influence, but I am feeling more positive for it ! so thank you soooo much. Xx😁
Well that is just so inspiring. How wonderful. And I’m grateful to have had some small part in that. But YOU are to be commended for putting in the effort and stepping up your game. At 52 you still have a lot of life to live and it sounds like you’re really showing up for it. 👍 thanks so much for sharing. 😊
I don't care about looking my age so much as looking like I'm in a downward spiral, if that makes sense. Youthful is a realistic goal for many of us, which means health, energy, and brightness. As you mentioned, adding flattering color to an outfit, especially near the face, adds energy and brightness. Imo, it doesn't have to be huge swaths of color, but a scarf, or top under a sweater or jacket is what I'm thinking. Even shiny, polished earrings add energy and brightness to a look. I don't wear bright lipstick, usually, but I definitely wear blush. I read a book by a famous makeup artist when I was young, and he said that blush was the most important part of makeup. He advised that even if you wore no other cosmetic, to wear blush. It adds a look of health.
Frumpy Handbags are on my list of mistakes. Get rid of your scratched, peeling, dirty or damaged handbag. There are good options at every price point, including Target and Walmart.
Would love to see a video specifically dedicated to COMFORTABLE stylish shoes. Haven’t had good luck with Naturalizer but Clarks have always been a win in the comfort department
GABOR is amazing. Feminine and comfortable, a lot of them have special comfy soles, too. I always invest in a good pair of Gabor's. Tamaris is another quality -comfy brand of shoes.
Thanks for the great video, and much appreciated boundaries for people who may disagree. Kind, polite differences of opinion are getting rare on social media
I find your videos inspiring. You have a kind way about you. I especially appreciate your providing the sources and links. Thank you. I'm a fan and always look forward to seeing more from you. :)
love your speaking style and you hit right on what I need as age appropriate. I am retired and don't want to live in sweats but you are right I like classy but it was starting to feel outdated!
I am 62 and look better than I did in high school...Seriously. Also, times change everything....What looked good in the 80's and was even expected then, is of course outdated 40 years later....I don't wear heels anymore, by choice. It took two years to fully heal a very bad sprain that landed me in the ER. So a dressy shoe without a heel that works is a Mary Jane, and since they are Chanel, no one says they're frumpy : ) Thank You for this video.
Two weeks ago, I sprained my ankle and landed in the ER! It still hurts. Now I am wondering if it might take two years to heal. Good advice about the dressy shoes!
I'm late to the party but wanted to share that I have had great success with Hotter shoes. They are well made, size consistent, and have a variety of cute styles. (I'm 64 with foot issues) Love your channel! I'm trying to up my game in 2021!
@@patriciageorge9648 I'm not sure if they offer wide sizing or not. I remove the insole that comes with the shoe and put in my own orthotic. I've actually had good luck purchasing them used off ebay. I decided to take my chances on the first pair and liked them enough to buy a bunch more, all barely used at a discounted price.
I found myself in watching fashion videos on RU-vid to get in touch with what younger women find attractive. Since I retired, my life changed so much that I seemed to lose my own sense of style. It really helped me to see those videos. I can use some modern pieces in ways that work for me and my own style and body type. I so much agree that we need to keep trying and to keep evolving in our style as our own lives and bodies change.
Never give up - My mom was 93 when she passed away and always wore earring and lipstick - She was never without either one and took pride in her clothes as well
Another thing that is aging and frumpy (at least in my mind!) is wearing matching jewelry (ring, bracelet, earrings all the same). So agree with modern shoes, wearing classics in unexpected ways, and a chic, modern hairstyle! Most of all - try to make an effort! I'm 73, and recently bought my first piece from Talbots, as to me, this was always an old lady store ! I have to admit it was the only place I could find a dressy pair of black pants, with belt loops, slim legs in a petite! Nordstrom is always sold out of petites in most everything in my size, and as much as I love JJill, their pieces are unstructured (for the most part). I also do a capsule wardrobe - but since Covid lockdown, I have let my hair color grow out, and am now almost pure white (which I don't mind), but find that I'm needing to add some slightly different shades of colors to my wardrobe to make this work, and to add more silver jewelry and a brighter lipstick!
Love all of this, Fiona. Yes, you're absolutely right about the matching jewelry. I'm going to jot that down in my notebook and mention it in an upcoming video. Thanks for sharing. I've shopped at Talbots for years, but I do find that you have to be careful about your choices there. And I absolutely think your quest to add a little more color to your white hair look is spot on. Thanks for dropping in and leaving a comment.
I was guilty in the shoe department until recently I bought the Ecco sneakers you linked in gray to match my hair. I feel 10 years younger when I wear them. Same with my cute black ankle boots. Cute shoes make the outfit!
@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms Thanks for good video. idk Engl. slang words like frumpy. Could you use real words in future? Or arent they modern enough, haha.? Is it healthy but ugly shoes? I can't wear high heels at all, and wouldn't want to even if I could. Why should women spoil their health to look good? we have to change that sick idea. I have seen some pretty nice, feminine shoes w flat heels and not tormenting the toes too much. Although really foot-right ones aren't made even by Ecco.
I pay close attention to NOT trying to look young @ 68 yrs old. I shoot for classy casual some color neat..neat..neat. Hair is braided neat as with my home clean colors on point decor match. It's so wonderful not to have to look young.. just be a lady a Queen as in how you carry yourself its a mindset more than a throne. Thanks for your tips.
I agree. I'm 66 and looking young isn't on my radar at all. As you said, neat, neat, neat. Classic, simple, dignified. A couple of decades ago, there was an older lady in my neighborhood who is now in my mind as my style icon. Classic, simple, dignified, always with one beautiful accessory.
Hi! Can you show what “out” looks like? Maybe examples of poor haircuts or frumpy shoes? Also ideas where to find the right clothes? I live in an area where style is not really in so there are not a lot of stores with unique items. Thanks!
This video was from two years ago and it is still all valid advice. Another thing I’ve noticed makes us look frumpy is if We wear some thing loose on top and on bottom. It creates a Bag Lady look which is bound to make us look sloppier, older, and fatter 😮
Hi Kay! I agree with all you good advice!! I have always dressed "classic" and have always received compliments. I will admit as I get older (71) it is more of a challenge to find clothing age appropriate (ie: to low, to short, to tight, sleeveless) Boy I sound like a real cry baby!! LOL! When I shop for clothes not coming home empty handed is a good day!! Love you and you channel! Have a wonderful day and I will see you in the next one! :)
Hello, I am enjoying your videos and they have help me tremendously. I appreciate you taking the time to help us the ladies over 50. I also enjoy your personality. Thank you. May God continue to bless you.
I’ve pared down my makeup routine and my costume jewelry a lot in the past couple of years. I just don’t have time for all of that anymore. I put more emphasis on having nice dressing pieces. Stitch Fix has been a godsend.
Cathy DeFelice I’m appreciating what I’ve got. I have a chronic illness and I can barely get out of bed most days. I've been old since I was 40 so I appreciate what I have got
Oh my gosh I still see ‘helmet hair’ and it is so aging! My sister is about 10 years older than me and grew up in the 60’s and still glues every hair in place with hair spray so nothing moves. Thanks for the great tips. Very helpful video.
Many women have hair loss issues and don't want their hair to move around since it will reveal their bare scalp. So on goes the spray, hopefully keeping carefully arranged hair in place. I speak from experience 🙁
@@dawnsemon7230 That’s true. My comment was unkind - I would do the same if I needed to. 🌷. We all have our challenges. I’m fortunate with my hair so far but as I get older, there are other things that sure aren’t what I’d like them to be.
@@dawnsemon7230 Oh, that's me. I have a big cowlick down the back of my head and a bald spot the size of a quarter right on top of my head. I spray my hair down like a lion tamer! I do try to make it look natural, however, not a helmet. I think the cut is important to achieve this.
Love your channel I ve had an illness and lost my stomach I ve dropped two sizes and I’m building my wardrobe again with a lot of your tips . I’m in Dublin Ireland and I’m 59
Great tips, Kay. Your eyes just pop with that outfit you're wearing! I love the tips on simple jewelry and the encouragement to grow old gracefully and naturally!
Love your tips! I would go for 6 pairs of shoes, though. I in addition to the casual sandal, for city walking, I would add a dress sandal. And then, living in the North East, I would add a pair of dress boots for the winter. I'm guessing you live in warmer climes? I love your idea about adding color. It does seem like so many women, and not just only older women, think that only black and grey are chic. I really like to add a splash of magenta, or fuchsia to brighten things up!
I accidentally found you last night on your channel. I was so excited and delighted. I’m already addicted! You look amazing and You are still the best speaker! Wonderful content! (Kay Williams from Mabank)
Love your tips, Kay, thank you for your honesty. Clumpy shoes have been my bad habit and leaving the idea of trying to look younger behind has been an adjustment. I like your shoe advice too.
You are so right about shoes! When I travel, I start my packing with 2-3 pairs of shoes, and I walk 6-8 hours, I build what I wear from that. I love to be well dressed when I travel. There are really great styles now. No need for high heels.
Hi Kay, I have just discovered your channel and love it! Thank you for your wonderful tips. As a professional entering semiretirement, your ideas are a huge help! I found your blog and am a Christ-follower too. Blessings
When all is said and done, wear whatever makes YOU feel comfortable, beautiful, confident, strong, empowered and most of all HAPPY! We are all as young as we are ever going to be. HAVE FUN WITH FASHION! 😊
It depends. I've seen too many older women who look a bit nuts. Wild hair, wild clothes, wild makeup, like they trotted off to lala land and forgot to get back on the train to real life. I've seen plenty of young people like that, too, and then they wonder why people shy away from them. Your appearance is how you present yourself to the world; other people can't read your mind so they can only read your "message" in how you dress. What do you want that message to be?
@@edennis8578 ......The message IS......That woman feels comfortable, beautiful, confident, strong, empowered and most of all, HAPPY and she doesn’t care what ANYONE else thinks! Life is short and is NOT a “dress rehearsal!” HAVE FUN WITH FASHION! 😊
K, I love your channel! You are so humble to acknowledge your own mistakes while honestly leading us forward for the best “me”. The hair message today hit me between the eyes. I’ll be making some changes. And as someone two decades older than you, I have to tell you hat some of us have severe foot problems n our older years that eliminate so many styles. My “sneakers” are not trendy and it’s because I hav custom made prosthetics. Also the joint from foot to ankle was eaten up by arthritis 8 years ago. Surgery (5 screws) gave me the ability to walk without visible aids, as well as no longer falling. I am grateful to be able to walk, bike, swim, cook, clean, etc. I choose to wear the best shoes for me (not sneakers)and to settle to wearing a dressier shoe not for an hour at weddings. From age 50-60 I tried so many shoe brands but eventually had the surgery and am grateful for what I can do. I am going to take your hair hint today and “amp down” in order to be more modern. Love, love, love your channel. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Nancy. I know the foot issues must be frustrating but I love the way you have developed a sort of personal policy of how you’re going to handle it and proceed. You sound like a smart lady with a lovely attitude. 🥰
Agree. 2 knee, 1 hip replacement and a nursing career of 45 years. I can’t tell you how many shoes I try on. When I find one I buy it immediately even though I don’t have an occasion at the time. I have found Merrill, Naot, and some of the European shoes helpful.
I love your videos!!! What I noticed on this subject is that women tend to wear big and busy jewelry pieces as they get older. Big jewelry and/or too much of it truly ages women.
Great info Kay. I’m trying to simplify my wardrobe and this helps a lot. After all these years I still don’t know what my style is. I like a little bit of every style. I’m trying to learn how to put it all together. Thanks for your help!
Thanks so much for watching Frances. Our styles constantly evolve. The main thing is to know what really resonates with you so you can build a wardrobe that mixes well. You’ll get there!
I'm going to act like I didn't listen to you when you talked about the 4 pairs of shoes 🤣 The 2 things I love buying the most are shoes and perfume! Good tips, thanks sweetie ❤️
Kay I totally agree with your dress code. I have everything under control except for the HAIR.I can't seem to find a style that I can manage without a lot of work, and I am just not a WIG person. I am retired but I still like my fashion, and I realize I can't wear what I use to, but you are right about the frumpy shoes lol, I will not DO THAT! THANK YOU!!!
Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions, - 'don't aim for young but aim for modern', and don't try too hard' are just 2 really helpful suggestions.
Ah, what a lovely. loving woman telling the truth kindly and helpfully! I haven't lived yet (been ill since I was 18) and time has just passed in struggle. I want sun on my body , so I don't want to skip short skirts in summer time. I haven't reflected on what colours would possibly suit me better than the bright ones I have always liked (I am not into black, grey, beige, brown).
Check out the “Color Me Beautiful” stuff from years ago. It really helped me because I used to sew up all the colors. It will also really help as you start putting together a wardrobe because everything will coordinate and they will all look marvelous on you. The right colors make your skin look healthier.
I am 66 and newly retired with a closet full of work clothes. This video has encouraged me in this crazy time to continue to dress "presenting my best self" even if it is only for myself. Dressing not frumpily is definitely a mood booster.
Excellent doable tips. I have osteoporosis in my feet and have to be super careful. I’ve been told absolutely no heels. So I have two brown sandals (closed and open toed), two prs of runners (lt grey & colourful ASICS) and a pair of short black booties for winter. I love wearing black leggings with my winter casual dress (love the swing dresses for my apple body). And I’ve discovered an easy pixie even with my round face! (Pic on the side is old). Thank you for doing these videos.
I’m 57 and I’m under 5 ft. I tend to wear smock type tops and dresses and leggings. I’d like to dress with some freshness. I do try to look young and I don’t think it works for me. Loved your video xxxxx
I love your show. Please add more before and after pictures to enhance what you are advising . It’ll help those of us who need visuals . Thanks for a great show!
Hi Katherine. Thanks for watching. The reason I don’t have before pics is that it would be rude to use someone’s photo and point it out as being old or frumpy. 😉
Hi all! Late to the party, but I'm here🎉 I can definitely relate to the big hair. I work at an elementary school in the front office and my school is celebrating its 30th year this year. So our media clerk requested pictures from that era, the late 80s mid-90s. I never knew how much I contributed to the hole in the ozone layer until I saw all our big LaBeaufs🤣 and lest we forget those beautiful shoulder pads!! 26 yrs later, bc treatments helped me a embrace my short natural with so much love. But I am far from a 'get up & just go' woman. That is definitely a pet peeve I have always had. Even with a short natural, it needs to be moisturized, combed and brushed through, and conditioned. This is my 12 year in remission and if it weren't for the classic timeless options I learned from my mom then implementing my own style (I've been a scarf girl since jr. High. (I've learned to braid them as belts, wear them as bracelets, tie them around a loop, tie small ones as a lapel piece, etc) Now, neckerchiefs are also a go-to staple (although not as much in these hot Georgia months as in the cooler ones). Pssstt... I also secretly love meeting my adult children's friends & parents & one actually asked me "did you have work done?"😂😂 I guess I could have gotten offended, but I just shared with her my exercise regime (light resistance training, walking the halls of my school throughout the week) as well as my healthy eating (mostly fish, chicken, homemade fresh fruit smoothie, & green tea w sliced oranges/lemons daily) and my skincare (very little manipulation, sunblock daily, & LOTS OF WATER)🤗. I'll also add to the shoe department, and I know you have an upcoming video on bunions, but mine are fourth generation, inherited and I have learned what shoe style I know I can wear throughout the day.Anne Klein iFlex Sole has found a wonderful home in my closet in everything from my boots, to my slip-on kitten heeled mules, they are timeless and keep me "on my toes" w ease & comfort. No astronaut soles for me😂 ~Thanks for letting me join the party🎉😊
