When my dog is pulling I like to play a game of "red light green light" where I'll be walking then suddenly stop and playfully say "red light!" Then turn around and once she's back in position I say "green light" and "good job!" then keep going, and repeating this. I find this keeps her wondering where I am going which keeps her focused and controlled but the game aspect if it keeps her engaged and excited about it

I’d love to get your thoughts on using a halti/gentle lead. My puppy is a lab/border collie mix and is such a stronger puller, lunger & jumper. I started using a halti and it’s like I’m walking with an entirely different dog. She walks amazingly with it.

I used a halti halter on my German Shepherd who was a puller, it worked amazing. The police use halti a lot two.
@sixmercer2504
@sixmercer2504 Год назад
My Husky is my service dog and the gentle leader was a game changer when we were training. It kept her much less distracted and to thus Dat she won't chase a bunny or a squirrel if she's wearing it. If it's not on it means she's not working and can have free rein, but that has actually caused problems and we need to go back to using it all the time. I moved to the city and she's not used to people or dogs walking past our house. We have a bike/walking path literally like 50 feet from my front door. So if we're going outside does been lunging and barking and I'm not strong enough to control her anymore. The gentle leader is the ONLY training device I would ever use on my dog period. I describe it as being like a halter for a horse. It's the same exact principle and it really turns my insane.lunging barking Husky right back into my perfectly well behaved service dog. It's an absolute game changer.

During the weeks/months of loose leash training, do you ever just go a on a long walk where you're not training or does that confuse/delay progress? I like to go on long fast walks for exercise and would like to not be constantly stopping, turning, etc. but wonder if every time I do that it's a mixed message that undermines the training.

Hi ! I got my shiba puppy a couple weeks ago and he's the fastest learner puppy I've ever met. He is two months old so he's not fully vaccinated but he enjoyed a lot going out with me in his bag and was also doing pretty good with leash training. But during the last week he's been afraid of leaving home, doesn't let strangers pet him anymore like he used to, he tries to throw himself out of the bag and refuses to go out in the courtyard on leash. I suppose it's because of the day he got really scared on the bus when a child jumped on screaming and running out of control. I've been trying many different solutions but nothing seems to work :(

Does it sound realistic for the puppy to be leash walking only when 4months old, and then only small distance? I have a puppy that i got when she was 2 months old. We live in apartment and when we go outside, we walk on a leash - everywhere we go, from peeing outside to shop or to park. I would like to understand what to do if we HAVE To leashwalk anyway for longer distances than 50m, as this is the only way how she can see the outside world 😄She is now 4 months and when i ask her, she can walk beside me nicely but in other time she is just discovering the world.

But it's a total mess during our walks. She eats things off of the ground to a point she literally chokes on them, barks, or tries to get physical with any dog that crosses her path and doesn't care if I am there or not EVEN THOUGH I have treats ready! I hope to be a better owner tbh by watching these videos so thank you for putting them out!

For people living in dense city centers, where it is always busy all the time, avoiding distractions is impossible. Leash training at home is OK, but there is nowhere within an hour of me that won't have a busy street with people, cars, pigeons or other dogs (thankfully no devil squirrels). Really great tips, but I'm not sure how this point is applicable to city dwellers. Also, isn't a leash bad for brachycephalic breeds (pugs)?

I definitely felt that way when we got our puppy a couple months ago. If mostly hit me that first week we had him haha...but it definitely gets better!! You can do this! If you’re prepared with basic things like having a designated area for them in the house, a crate, food and treats and toys. You’re totally set! I felt overwhelmed with all of the MANY trainings I knew needed to be done. But we’ve learned to just be patient with our puppy and train a little bit at a time and it’s been a much better experience! For us and our puppy. As long as you care and love your puppy with everything youve got, you’ll be more than prepared! 😊

Blue heelers are awesome! I have a texas heeler and a lab heeler mix. Great dogs, very affectionate with their owners but don't expect them to love everyone! They are always very cautious around people. Mine will bark and the hair goes up on their backs. It can take a little while for them to be comfortable with someone so it's best to let them adjust on their own. They also need a lot of daily exercise, ball is their favorite. Good luck and enjoy your new pup!

Great video as always!!! My 14 week old puppy has started barking at me for attention (in her crate), especially when she sees me relaxing on the couch. Is it ok to ignore this? I have tried knocking on the crate and also saying "ahh ahh" in a firm voice but she just goes crazier, play bowing and acting like it's all a big fun game, she stares at me and barks even more :(((((((
@melm7617
@melm7617 3 года назад
If I could say, what works for me to stop that, I make sure we’ve potties first before crating, then I ignore her whines. She settles down. If I give her any attention, she continues. If she’s gone potty, there’s no reason for her not to settle. She does eventually and it’s all good! When I ignore the noise, she quiets right up, again, as long as I’ve set her up by ensuring her comfort she’s good, no need to feel bad. But by talking to her, she’s getting what she wants.

@@melm7617 Thank you!! Yes I am now ignoring it and she is doing much better. Still tries but quiets down much quicker. It's sometimes confusing because she does bark when she needs to poop. Harnesses are best for most dogs -- especially during training -- as the dogs are least likely to HARM themselves! A collar is intended to display licenses and tags. ONLY the most aggressive or strong require a "choke" collar. BE SURE to put these on correctly, as well, or your dog can suffer serious injury. Before you go to those, though, try hooking the leash to the front loop on a harness. A slight pull nicely redirects the dog's attention, and puts YOU back in control.. Most owners are amazed at how well this works!
@mixedmedialife7916

My advice is to choose these guys as your one trainer, because everyone has their own way, and then just begin watching every one of their videos and shorts that helps you and your dog build a relationship of you being in charge. We didn’t do enough consistency with our rescue dog and we pretty much, keep him at home now and it is challenging. The number one thing that I can tell you is to be consistent with you and with what you’re doing with your doggy… These guys really have a lot of valuable information, though, and can be totally trusted as your trainer. I’m wishing so much unconditional love and good luck for you and your puppy.

If you've been walking them with a harness get rid of it immediately (or save it for a few months from now). I was struggggggling with my shih tzu to walk anywhere. It was honestly embarassing walking her around because she would do whatever she wanted and would stop whenever she wanted and neighbors would stare lol. As soon as I moved to an appropriate leash she started to listen to me and we can actually go on walks now.

This is the only advice I don't agree with in the video. It's still possible to teach a dog not to pull on leash even when using a harness. Just heavily reinforce being at your side and looking back at you to "check in" on walks, and maybe only use a collar when you're doing practice indoors where there are no distractions. Initially we used a collar for our aussie, but there are so many unknowns on walks that if your dog gets scared of something like a sound it's never heard, another dog, a car, etc. and pulls, it's horrible on their throats. The moment that happened a couple of times and she hurt herself, I switched to a harness.

Hello! I am having big trouble walking my 4,5 month old golden retriever puppy. He's been going out for a 1,5 months now for potty training (since before that he wasn't fully vaccinated and the vet didn't want us to let him out). I let him descover the world, sniffing, tasting, walking wherever he wanted (always on a lead and under supervision of course). He eats anything and everything, each and every leaf on the ground, grass, mud, roots and he likes to chew on sticks, a lot. He lays down to chew, the walk is endless and he ends up doing his business indoors. I though him the command "stand up" but it only works when he decides he chewed enough on the stick to be curious about the treat, and generally speaking he tries to go back to chewing. I try to make him avoid putting things in his mouth, but I feel like the whole walking experience is getting frustrating for both of us. He doesn't get to do what is fun and I keep saying "no" to everything and pulling on the lead (he is trained to remove focus from things when he hears a "no"). I tried leaving his toys everywhere on the ground, he simply ignores them. I'm out of ideas, advice is very welcome!

Can you tell me what breed the puppy is in the video? Our rescue puppy is boxer/bull dog mix bit she has an extra breed I can't figure out. She has the same extra coloring and spots as the puppy in this video and I'm so curious.

I adopted two bonded 8 month Pik-chi puppies from a foster two weeks ago. Should I do their puppy training separately and should I put them in separate cages?

The number of treats in the video does not seem good to me. I'm not an expert, but it almost looks like a dog should get a treat for each step it takes

I hate harnesses and won't be using one. Having some control of your dog's head seems easier with the traditional lead

i think overtrain puppies for focus is simply wrong. taking the dog out of the dog. what i want in my dog ia curiosity and courage and a dog that wants to interact with the world. it makes it eazy to learn them to switch on and off. dogs that learn to much focus gets to nonindependent and i dont thinl they feel good when they always wonder about what their handler want them to do. always looking up at you when walking. what do you think about this?

Hello! Thanks for all the nice tips and tricks in this puppy series! I was wondering, I'm getting my first Yorkie puppy home in two weeks. He will be super tiny, only 8 weeks old . Should I have a collar plus leash or a harness plus leash on him, indoors /outdoors? I heard those tiny dogs are very sensitive around their neck. Your dogs are so much bigger, and you said that when theyre not trained they shouldn't have a harness so they get mixed signals from the leash. Please help 🙏🏾.

Google McCann dog training small breed. I wish they had more small breed content, but they do have some. I have a min pin. I struggled with getting a small enough collar initially.

QUESTION: You don’t recommend walking in the neighborhood until they’re 16 weeks old? Or don’t leash train them outside until then? Thanks for the clarification! My husband and I love the videos! Can’t wait for our sheepadoodle pup!

Hi there, Katie! We don't don't start any "formal" walking until around that age, but we do work on some other things. Check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QdhVsOrI-n0.html Happy Training!

You’re wrong about the harness. There are many dogs that are really small that can not wear a collar because they could break right through the trachea if they pull too hard. Too many deaths have happened and so smaller dogs under 10 pounds have to wear harnesses. So rather than tell us what not to use, why not think out of the box and teach us how dogs with harnesses can learn the same lessons? Thank you

Hey Ken. Around the harness point, i'm completely worried to use a collar over harness as it could lead to resistive pulling and damage to my frenchie puppy's throat - any advice?
@nmartin5551

Tough question. My only answer would be get a different breed of dog, but that isn’t helpful. Can you find any Frenchie specific training videos?

Halti or gentil leader works well in that case or a slip lead adjusted high on the neck up to the ears no pulling

My dog chokes on her collar because she pulls forward really hard. It's not because I'm pulling her as you say.

Honestly I give up. My dog is going to be 7 years old and none of the training I do helps. He’s not food motivated at all and ignores any treat I offer. He gets distracted easily and needs to smell everything. He pulls like crazy and I’m so damn tired. Good thing he’s small, I can’t imagine what id do if he was a larger dog

You gotta be confident when you walk him if your nervous and anxious he's gonna be the same way. It's very important your confidant.

😂 I would also give up by now if I had a small dog. My 6 months old weimaraner drives me crazy and I've been using both collar and harness with training leash attached to both lately while waiting for gentle leader which is not available in my country (believe it or not 😕). I really hope that one will help.
