Love these videos. I've always marvelled at the episode where Lucy misses the boat. In addition to the moving ship and gangway, there's a scene in their cabin, the dock manager's office, the helicopter rental office, the helicopter itself and the deck of the ship as Lucy is lowered onto it. Was all of that built within their usual studio? Mindboggling!

Those are great sets from terrific episodes. Love it 👍 Lucy describing her accident off screen sandwiched in between her driving off in one car and driving back in the other is genius.

I never once thought when watching these episodes about the cost of the sets. Wow~~ Amazing for that time. I really enjoyed when Rick, you showed us the setup of all their apartment rooms, plus the Tropicana. Who knew they were all side by side. When in my mind..way back then I imagined the apartment was miles downtown. Thank you for letting us see this.

We love watching the I Love Lucy reruns. I know that there were problems, but this show has gone on for years. It started when I was a child of 7. I am over 70 now. I think that they are all in Heaven now, watching their audience of well wishers.

Fabulous work and THANK YOU for all that you do. Interesting to note that the writers noted the Connecticut set was so huge that writers had to think of ways to get the characters to move around and stay close to each other lest they get lost - Lucille Ball oversaw that set with great care and wanted it to be just so - I know I am in the minority, but I love the Westport episodes and let's not forget the series had its longest laugh that season in "Lucy Does the Tango" - keep these videos coming - they are absolutely wonderful!

Oooh!!! Thanks, Rick!! I just LOVE seeing & hearing about all of these superbly structured & highly technical sets....and how they made everything function--especially considering this was all done back in the 1950s! Those were definitely some extremely technical & engineered sets!! As always, Rick, thanks for the awesome look back (and the details) as to these tricky set constructions. VERY cool! I just love your videos! And I look forward to each & every one of them! 😊 ~ Maura from Maryland ~

Great stuff. I, too, love the episode "The Great Train Robbery". "Bon Voyage" is wonderful too. I Love Lucy had some realistic looking sets, not all, but there were some really good standouts: their Hollywood hotel suite, the cigar shop in Cuba, the run-down cabin with the awful beds... We never get tired of Ricky, Lucy, Ethel, Fred, Little Ricky.

Just discovered you tonight. This is amazing. Someone in another comment mentioned being 30 and feeling like they were born in the wrong decade. I laughed because I have felt the same. I can quote the next line coming in almost every episode. I am proud to say I have watched this as long as I can remember. I would love to visit their sites. I stayed in Hilton in NYC a couple years ago. Is that the one they lived in? This may already be mentioned but the Home sweet Home picture in the train episode looks like the one in the scene showing Fred and Ethel’ s bedroom.

I love your channel! I am officially an addict! I would love to see a video of how certain sets were re-dressed to double as another set in another episode. I think one of them is the diner set that was later used as an Italian restaurant in another episode. Not sure if there are any other examples of this happening. I loved the video that showed how the Ricardo kitchen was visible during Ricky's Hollywood audition!

I really loved the set where they spent the night at the rural Hotel. They leave there and then Lucy is driving and a billboard brings him right back. Love all the activity of the hotel room bedroom with the train, but what I really appreciated and wish had been included, but it wasn't part of the bedroom set, was the cheese sandwich that the hotel manager fixed for lucy. That cheese must have been 60 years old or rubber LOL! Great selections. Another one I thought about was the outside of the Ricardo apartment when it was raining when Lucy was out there with Superman

Very interesting and enjoyable. I do have a minor bone (or two) to pick. ILL was not the first sitcom on tv. I Remember Mama was on three years before ILL, in 1948. But, ILL was the first filmed sitcom using three cameras, rather than one as was common in the movies. As for the sets, the regular sets could just be moved behind the new sets. Sound stages were large (and ILL was filmed on a former movie stage) so you had room for a horse, two cars, etc. Poverty Row studios (Monogram, etc) often had a car move across the stage (a few feet) pulled by wires not picked up in the film, as was the bed. The apartment scene where Lucy is in the car would be a flat NYC scene, with a movable stoop for Ethel to sit on. I'm sure most of the props used here were around the studio somewhere and the cost would have been merely the moving and re-constructing of them.

LOVE your vids Rick! We've seen the layout in the soundstage of the usual New York sets with the nursery on our far left to the Tropicana on our far right. During the filming of the Hollywood episodes, were some or all of those set temporarily dismantled and stored to make room for all of the necessary Hollywood sets? I'm particularly curious about the hotel pool set since once it's filled with water it can't easily be moved.

Hi, Rick! A fascinating video, as always! There were very popular and long-running sitcoms before "I Love Lucy", such as "Mary Kay and Johnny" (arguably the first tv sitcom, from 1948-1951, along with "Life With Father", aka "The Stu Erwin Show", which ran from 1950-1955. "I Love Lucy" was definitely the first sitcom to be filmed like a radio show (the 3-camera filming that Desi Arnaz and Karl Freund pioneered) and the first smash-hit sitcom that set the standard for filming and producing a sitcom.

If you're interested, you can see episodes of "Life With Father" on RU-vid. This kind of show represented a type of sitcom that one can find to the present day in shows, such as "Modern Family", the hapless, rather bumbling head of the family to whom things happen. I'd like to find out what you think of "Life With Father".

This complex sets video is great. But to a lucy fan BIG TIME like me, id like to see more behind the scenes stuff, example maybe the guys rocking the sets back and forth, more images of around the sets, stuff camera doesn't show. And you forgot to mention in the First Stop episode, you can see where Ricky and Lucy's bed leg is in a gap kinda thing in the floor to keep it inline as it moves. I m a huge lucy fan, the DVD collection, books, movies, behind the scenes stuff. I LOVE LUCY. I look for all that stuff too. Like when you can see the cars pulled by a thin wire in those going to hollywood episodes. Or when ricky steps over the wire. So, just making comment and not meaning to disrespect your work. Thx. Im Rey by the way PS. My favorite episode also is the great train robbery. And also Return Home From Europe. I even looked up that particular flight on line archives, it was a real flight, not in series but in real life. Even looked up the plane they used. By the way, did you know that American steamship lines sent people to Desilu to recreate the shipboard sets? Cool stuff.

I went on a tour years ago and her house was on the tour but she was gone that day. The driver said she would come out sometimes and speak with the people on the bus.

Hi rick I was wondering I went thru all the comments in the comment section after I watched this video again for the 4th time but I didn't see if you said which set was your favourite....I nailed mine down to two and they are the first stop in the cabin and the train 🚂 set I'm sure if I had to pick just one I'd have a hard time because those two are absolutely awesome sets but can you say if you've got one favourite or 2....it's not easy picking just one because they're ALL great sets....thanks my friend

+Mr T. Great question, although I think the way they rigged the bed in the cBin was amazing, I love the Train set. One of my top episodes too

According to Bart Andrews' I Love Lucy book, Desilu got American Export Lines to help pay for the shipboard set in return for a mention on the show.

the train episode always reminds me of the time a friend and I were traveling through Reno and late at night, we found a inexpensive motel to stay at for the night, and we found out why it was so inexpensive.... there was a train track running right behind the motel, and the train came barrelling down the track at 1:30 in the morning it did not shake the room or send the beds sliding back and forth, but it was Loud! we thought it was an earthquake at first.
