I’ve always incorporated my heritage into my home decor. I’m African American and always felt it was important for my family. Thank you for acknowledging it, but for me, it’s not a trend but a way of life. I look forward to all of your videos. Truly inspiring!

I feel like if I constantly chase after trends, I will never be truly happy. I’ll always be wanting the next thing. I know what I’m truly always drawn to and just add and tweak, etc. I think I stay happier with my home, self, longer. That’s why you resonate with me so much.

Heritage and travel I think finds its way in all our homes. The joy of the memories evoked from travel treasures in your home and the warming wrap of heritage that makes you feel grounded and connected to your family and culture. I just brought home a portrait of my grandmother painted by an artist who worked with my great grandfather. I had it restored; it is over 100 years old. I have hung it in my sitting room/study and am truly delighted every time I walk in and see her. Wonderful memories. Great video to inspire us all to create something truly unique and special to us.😊👍

Yes! Thanks, Valentina! My heritage is Italian and just purchased marble for my new kitchen countertops with full wall splashes in the same marble. It’s a slight off-white with beautiful light gray swirls. I wanted to get the appliances from Italian manufacturers, but none of them are WiFi connected, so chose all Monogram appliances instead since I want a full on smart kitchen. As always, thanks for your much valued advice! 😘

I've found myself t r e n d ing toward Danish modern as a lifestyle. Now that my parents are gone, I'm surprisingly finding comfort in the style (I used to love Victorian), and I think it's because my life started out in a mid-century modern state-of-the-art house with Danish modern decor. The fact that my husband is Danish (and Swiss) makes it fit even more. I'm excited for you that you're going to Copenhagen! I'll be watching everything you share with us!

I have handmade items from both the Italian side of my family and the Polish side. I love knowing that these were made by family and I love finding ways to use them. Years ago I framed some needlepoint antimacassars (the arms) and hung them in the dining room. The long piece from the back of the sofa I use as a table runner.

Hi Valentina! I really enjoy hearing your input on trends especially since you have such a global perspective. One thing I did want to bring up is the use of Etsy. They were recently boycotted by the artists/users of the platform because of the high fees they take from the artists' sales. I'm all for shopping locally and finding unique artisanal or crafted pieces but with that said, it's equally as important to give credit where credit is due. In this case, make sure the creators themselves are being paid fairly.

Thank you for such a beautiful video. I'm looking forward to the videos of Copenhagen. The trends you highlighted are very much on point. The Exoticsism (sp) may be part of the "Revenge Travel" trend I recently read about. After being shut in for two years, everyone wants to go SOMEWHERE which is very healthy for the mind, body and soul. I spend downtime diving into my heritage on ancestry. What I did 18 years ago was buy a house that is almost a carbon copy of my great aunt's bungalow in Milwaukee. She left me so many beautiful 1920s and 1930s decorative pieces and furniture that I use in my 1928 bungalow here in New Orleans. Have a wonderful and safe trip!!! 💟

Well, for the first time ever I have bought something that someone else advertised! 😆 I also LOVE your channel. It’s one of the very few (the others are forest/permaculture gardening) channels I follow. I’ve never found someone who said all the things I have felt and unconsciously wanted to do in my house. You have explained so simply all the things I’ve hated/loved and given me reasons and rationale for them! We are currently building our own custom house, and I feel so validated and happy that the things I really wanted/insisted for in the house (that people thought I was crazy for) are actually sound design choices! 💕

This speaks to me so much!! ❤ My mom is from Sweden and my dad is from the South, and I was born and raised in Georgia, currently living in Atlanta! I was raised with the Swedish language and southern accents all under one roof! So you can imagine that finding someone like you, who knows and lives in the South, but is also so in love with Scandinavian culture, is just awesome! Your style totally resonates with me. I get SO excited when you show the Nordic and heritage styles, and I laugh when you say "Lord willin' and the crick don't rise" 😂 Our home is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design, with touches of southern comfort!

I love New Nordic and Heritage. My family is from South and Central America. Growing up we always had something on our walls that displayed our country (wood cutout in the shape of country or velvet map😱). I prefer using local artwork. I love my gray tones.. My walls are Mega Greige and love it.. Just redid my home 5 1/2 years ago..Got away from all the beige walls etc..Did all new wood floors in a rich Mink color.. Love the change.. Won't go back to beiges....I like white now.. But I do have crystal pieces from Ireland for many years and enjoy them. I'm from Ireland.😉 And I have beautiful linens from Ireland and Germany...My husband is from Germany and we have dishes, tea sets etc from Germany...So I get the Heritage thingy .🙂 We traveled around different countries had a blast and enjoyed every minute. Brought home pieces from every country for our enjoyment and memories...Love the different art work too... Have a safe and wonderful trip. Can't wait to see your videos.. Stay safe...

I love your mention of ‘exoticism’! I just returned from a glorious vacation in the Bahamas, and fell in love with the island, culture and people. I brought back some prints by local artists and had them framed, and also purchased my new most favorite coffee table book called BAHAMA MAMA by Sofia Whitehead. It’s a great way to make your spaces beautiful, meaningful and authentic all at the same time 🤣

Yes, people do glitter grout typically with glass tiles but it definitely depends on the application and typically only designers spec it. Glitter grout has been around for years and is premixed! I recently worked for a tile manufacturer for 6 years lol.

I have really enjoyed being a follower these past few months! You have helped me immensely. I would like to say, however, on behalf of local artists, that folks can be recommended to check out their local galleries. Many times an artist, like myself, will take a commission on request; interviewing the purchaser, and creating a meaningful piece to fit the area they are looking to fill; in the colors they request…helping to bring a room together. I know I put a lot of thought and prep-work into what I create… to the point of your video, keeping the regional, cultural, and/or familial heritage in mind as I paint.🙏🏻💝🎨

For the last two years I've been obsessed with lime-washed walls. I live in a 150 year old adobe casita, and I recently lime-washed all my walls. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look and everyone who visits also goes crazy over the look. I was just hired to limewash 3 air bnb houses. I think I have a new profession. If you're thinking about doing it, just try it on a wall and I think you'll not only have fun doing it, but it's a stunning look.

@@JupGem Yes they are beautiful. I actually just bought a 50 lb bag of lime for $12 and experimented first. Then, looking at the cost of pigment, I went to a local place that has beautifully ochre colored dirt, filled a bucket and made pigment from that, then mixed it in with the lime. So now my walls are just a beautiful soft ochre color that almost glows when the sun shines on it. And I did it all for less than $20.

I’m not trendy. However I like seeing how ppl live outside if the States. It’s so interesting from architecture to just sizes of rooms & use of space. Like ppl in America complaining about closets or storage or renting storage and u visit places where our closet is two rooms where the layout is so inventive and cool. Very humbling and just interesting. Looking forward to Copenhagen!

Trends tend to be of the moment. I do think it’s great to add pieces from your travels, vintage art, family heirlooms or vintage pieces here and there. It creates warmth, personality and your own design style without looking like your entire home is from the pages of the latest RH, Crate, WE or PB catalog. Your home needs some personality and less of the latest trend to feel authentically you.

At 6:30- in the Dominican dialect of Spanish it’s “ojalá”, as in “ojalá que disfrutes sus vacaciones!” My business takes me to tropical places with relative frequency, and I always make a point to buy the piece that catches my eye in the marketplace. Every time I walk away, I regret it!

Yes love the heritage trend. This is literally what i was trying to incorporate. I have Caribbean heritage and my husband is west African and we live in the Netherlands. I am trying to bring more African design in the house. We inherited a lot of dark wood African masks and woodwork. I find it difficult to incorporate into interior design. Any tips?

I would suggest grouping the masks and other African items together on a gallery wall. Add in some throw pillows and quilts made in African fabrics.

If you don’t have the wall space or desire to create a gallery wall with the masks, consider hiring a professional photographer to photograph the masks. You could then pack or get rid of the masks and display the photos instead because photos could give you more flexibility. E.g., you could have black and white photos printed if you like Valentina’s style and want to have a more dramatic look. You may be able to put the photos in a narrow hallway that wouldn’t be a good home for the masks if you’re afraid of people bumping into them, in a bathroom if you’re afraid of moisture ruining them, etc.

Funny that you were talking about heritage I am one for being in the melting pot so I am not drawn to any county but I found my self looking at the southwest I grew up in Phoenix Arizona then move to Philadelphia area now in Florida. I really like the modern southwest style. I would like to incorporate that style in my home along with the warmer lime wash walls

Valentina, I was in Copenhagen for the millionth time just last November and I stayed at the Bryggen Guldsmeden, at Islands Brygge. Even if you don't stay there, you absolutely have to go check it's lobby (maybe go have a drink there or something) as the interior design is so quirky and out of this world it's definitely worth going there just to have a little peek. I loved the all the details, from the overlapping rugs to the chandeliers, The staff are lovely and it's quite an informal atmosphere so maybe if you ask they'll let you see the other floors' lobbys and the pool area, which are quite special as well. My room was amazing, the right side of industrial with turkish prints to die for on the robes and bedding and a plush huge cushion as a window seat, I only wish I would have found out where I could source them from. Just lovely, I hope you get to see it.

Hi Valentina! I have been following you for years, and a big fan of your work. I wanted to post my recommendations for Copenhagen, in case there were any on my list - you had not been to yet: Cafe/art shop: Apotek 57, beautiful interior and handcrafted pieces, great food too. Best for brunch/lunch/coffee. Bar: Sanders, best for evenings, the entire hotel (and bar) have had a custom scent made, which is just the cherry on top. The interior is not very typically scandinavian, but it has a very special feel. Louise Roe Gallery: A newer concept store, very "luxurious scandinavian" - I come there quite often for coffee and to look at the interior pieces and art. House of Finn Juhl: If you have not already been - i recommend that you visit the house of Finn Juhl - with all its original interior, from when he lived there. Its a timeless gem! I wish you the best of trip! Let me know, if you need anything, xxx

What can you share about the wabi sabi design style. I'm redecorating and after reaearching, realized I already had much of the furniture and decor already to create the wabi sabi vibe. I got rid of pieces that just did not bring me joy and fit the vibe and re-sued the pieces that worked and just added a few very slect pieces. It all started in Greece! There were old greek colonies in Spain meaning there's a connection to the whole South America you can see it in the houses with a central patio where families can collect water from the rain.

Exotic visit - yes, and from our oversees and USA travels we bring home practical local handicrafts like paintings, sculptures, rugs, vases, baskets, etc and have nods to heritage from both sides of the family. Kelly green trend - too glaring for my taste, I prefer sage. Beige trend - too visually uninteresting for my taste. Air Travel with a pillow is not worth the airline baggage fee I would be charged. I love the globe jellyfish disk chandelier in one of your photos and one is on ordered for my bathroom. Love that you support Etsy and artist collaboration (where the artist gets credit and profit share) in this video since so much of your home haul products are mass produced. Have fun in Copenhagen

I love same size pillows on the bed too. But I have Queen and good luck finding queen bedding that comes with queen size shams. Yes, shams don't have to match and you can buy queen shams elsewhere, but most I've found are thru Amazon and I hate them! Nothing out there that wows me. Valentina, if you (or anyone else) has suggestions on where I should be looking please let me know! Thanks!

If you can do some very basic sewing you could buy an extra flat sheet and make them yourself. Otherwise ask family and friends if they can sew it up for you.

I'm Portuguese/South African. The Portuguese side has lots of beautiful hand painted tiles and cork and hand painted ceramics. The South African side has lots of woven baskets, dark wood sculptures and beaded work, they are not easy to mix and match 🙄. My personal style is minimal and MCM . Let's say that it's a minimal eclectic style 🤣
