I stay away from $/hr but every once in a while i resort to it depending on the work, usually for small punchlist. I had one guy straight laugh in my face when i told him i would charge him $60/hr. I folded up my ladder and walked out, told him i had another house to go to. They later sent texts begging me to atleast put up the back door curtain because its very cold for them and that they.were now ok with the 60 😂 I lile this video, i could tell you put a lot of effort into it. I noticed the light music, the editing, jump edits, b-roll, script, lots of good information

Thanks brother! I am focusing on more high quality stuff! Glad you can see! This is fun! Keep up the great work! There is always someone out there that will pay our rate, ultimately they understand, it costs money to be in business!

I have done thousands of jobs, and never charged by the hour. I spend money for specialty tools to get jobs done as fast as possible, and be able to serve and help more people. We need to understand that our time is extremely valuable.

I'm glad you are killing it. I remember way back when you quit your job (mechanic) and then moved your family into a motor home and were focusing on being debt free... I am very impressed.

Got my 1st client, and it snowballed into a worm hole - it was supposed to be a punch list in an old bathroom. Main job, replace a few rows of 4x4 tiling. Well… now it’s a 75 sqft teet out, cement board, water proofing, sealant, and the tiling dry times. The customer seems to think it should be faster :) That’s another issue as here is where i went wrong: I stopped over communicating, down to average communicating becuse of the time/money I’ve lost I have not raised my pricing since I ballparked the job after it morphed. I was way off Client has unrealistic explanations on time frame. Many issues .. like beer cans in the wall, reusing old parts, and trying to save a relic tile. Well I am learning a lot, and luckily I can afford to take the hit. Next time … lol going to be a lot different. At minimum I’m learning time frames on set up & cleanup, delays. Etc

The hardest part I have when it comes to quoting is understanding and knowing how long a specific job will take. More on the remodeling side when doing projects. Similar to other bids but not the same so trying to find the price point is challenging. Also for me it comes down to feeling confident about what I provide. Knowing my value
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 4 месяца назад
Mindset/ confidence is such a huge part! Knowing the time it takes to do jobs is tricky until you have done it a few times, even then, on bigger remodels where there are a lot of variables it is tricky!

I've done pretty good on material estimates, but am repeatedly getting my own time wrong. I've been tracking my time with an app, and breaking it down to see what I did. That's helped. But mainly, my default is not working for me, because I default to think of ideal time as opposed to realistic based on past history.

Hey thanks for being here! I appreciate your comment! is it the type of music, the volume or just music in general? I am curious as I am trying to make higher quality videos! I appreciate your input!

Besides quality, second selling point is insurance. Does the cheaper estimate include insurance? If not the liability is on the building owners insurance. You may be setting yourself up for a scam. Nothing less than there insurance going up or canceled. If a situation were to arise
@handymanjourney

Totally! It's important to make sure that the homeowner is comparing apples to apples when they are putting one estimate against another

I m just starting out so Its hard for me come up with my prices. I have searched google and called handyman businesses in my area. It helped a little
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 4 месяца назад
Glad that has helped! One thing I recommend is go through the job in your head and on paper a few times to make sure you know and account for all parts of the job so you can charge for it

In MS normal is cheaper than most of the country and you simply wouldn’t believe the extreme low quality of work I’ve seen here. You also wouldn’t believe how many workers won’t even show up after they say they will. It’s truly a rough economical climate for integrity

I must be dumb. Can you give an example of the hourly rate equation? Just pick any random number for the monthly expenses like $500.
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 4 месяца назад
Yes, monthly expense = $500 $500 x .2 (20%) = $100 $500+ $100= $600 $600x .2 (20%) = $120 $600 + $120 = $720 $720 / 128 (working hours in month to) = $5.62/ hour is what you need to charge, but more than likely you will have a much higher overhead amount

As the industry suffers in a terrible economy, I feel pressured to give ridiculously low prices just to get work.
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 4 месяца назад
We aren't in a terrible economy yet! Things aren't that bad yet. Although we may be heading there depending on what happens here in the immediate future. Things are predominantly slow because it is the slow season, there are people out there that will pay what you need to make, just a matter of you finding those people and marketing to those people!

My biggest pricing mistake was allowing fear of customers declining service determine the price. Much better to fear under charging and living in a handyman van, again, DOWN BY THE SACRAMENTO RIVER!

Unfortunately, your customers compare you to your competitors. Its also very difficult to actually follow the law. If you're doing everything right, you are undercut by illegals and other pros that just ignore the rules, especially in hiring help. If you are positioned to charge what you should, the customer says, "for that price I should just hire a generall contractor." Then the general subs it out to the illegals.

There is a lot of victim mentality in this comment. It's important to be on the positive side of thinking, things end up much better that way!

@@handymanjourney Do you actually abide by the $500 cap total that handymen can charge for labor/materials on a single job in California? C'mon, be honest. I know you won't because a lawyer could call you on it on a public post in the future. It's not victim mentality, it's straight up oppressive laws in Ca. What other profession do you know of that hasn't legally received a raise in decades?
