Panning helps us create space in a mix. It can also help us create a more immersive musical experience for our listeners.
Making sure we have just the right amount of space can sometimes be complicated. To help you out, I’ve put together 5 panning tricks to get you started!
Listen to the song here: open.spotify.c...
5 Panning Tricks Featured:
1. Pan Affected Source Opposite Of The Dry Source For More Stereo Width
2. Create 'Ear Candy’ and additional movement With FX and Panning
3.Create Excitement With Automating Panning On Harmonies
4. Panning Cymbal FX For More Excitement
5. Using Panning To Differentiate A Section Of A Song
I wrote this song with the singer of the band “Little Empire.” I wrote this song and recorded it at the same time. It is one of the most simplistic songs I think I’ve written and recorded in years. Not necessarily the writing of it. Melodically, it’s quite interesting. I’ve got kind of a dark Police 9th chord going through it all the time. But the production is INSANELY simple.
We did this song in no time. Not that we were rushed, it’s just simple. For example, the drums have no cymbals!

TRICK 1: Guitars Guitar 1 - 50% Left - Sends to Reverb on that is 100% Right Guitar 2 -Duplicate of Guitar1 with 1/64 delay - 100% Right -Volume is lower than Guitar1 -You can add a little modulation to help with phasing -No Reverb on Verses At the chorus - Guitar 1 goes 100% left - Guitar 2 is already 100% right, but starts sending to reverb 100% left. - Guitar 2 volume comes up to fill some space TRICK 2: Subtle, Percussive Ear Candy -Take a drum loop -Distort the crap out of it -Make it flip flop between hard left and hard right. -Put it on the choruses. TRICK 3: Vocals - Chorus Backing vocals are panned to 30% Left/Right - At the final chorus, they go wider. TRICK 4: Cutting stuff out - Bass and Second Guitar cut out - Main Guitar gets centered. - Width is lost for a section so that it is more surprising when it comes back. TRICK 5: Cymbal Sample Trick - Reverse Cymbal - Pan goes from Left to Right as the Cymbal fades in. TRICK 6: Guitar Stereo Tremelo-esque effect - maually automate panning between hard-left and hard-right on a section. - Stereo reverb to make the flip/flop a little less sharp.

I have to say, what an amazing series this is Warren. I have enjoyed and learned from them all, but this one is the best so far (for me). Just sitting back and watching you enjoy yourself, doing what you do best, taking something simple, and making it truly interesting. Doesn't hurt that I like Lilly's Vocals too, because I'm going to need to watch this one quite a few times, there's so much in it ;0) Thank you again.

Hi Friends, Panning helps us create space in a mix. It can also help us create a more immersive musical experience for our listeners. I opened up a very simple song with me playing every instrument, one guitar, bass and the simplest Drum part ever! With that I had some fun creating 5 quick Panning tricks! Have a marvellous time trying out these panning tricks! Please let us know some of your ideas!

Thanks for the video. When you talk about panning the reverb, on Ableton where each stereo track only has one pan knob, would that involve duplicating the track, adding fx to one, and panning both off to either side? And do you also talk about panning the reverb send? Cheers.

...you know..if you release it..it will be a hit :) ...once smart man said:"ingenuity is in simplicity" :) ....this is amazing..I'm gonna "steal" this tricks.... :) ..and song is really catchy... Question is what was causing those clicking? At one part I couldn't hear it..and then again I could. Didn't understood what you were doing..creating "perfect waves" or just copy/paste on exact spot where it mathematically should be? How can you put it in that exact spot moving it, and copying it so fast..like you have snapshot on right spots on tracks( my profession - Autocad) ..and yeas..almost forgot... you can really sing..:)

Very slight slope to the panning automation would get rid of the clicks but not mess with timing (probably). P.S. What you did with the drum loop going through a guitar amp was incredible. Invaluable tip for getting the signature Killing Joke guitar tone = Have two tracks (ideally two mics on a cab, but any two tracks of the same guitar performance) pan them on top of one another and intentionally move the mics (ideally) or tracks out of phase. I can't think of any Killling Joke record in which the guitars are in phase. So I have to assume it's intentional. That hollow, out of phase sound is absolutely a signature part of the Killing Joke guitar tone. I'm a huge Killing Joke fan, also a professional producer and guitar player/songwriter/international touring artist with my own group The Faceless (progressive, experimental, extreme metal equally influenced by Oingo Boingo and Allan Holdsworth as Voivod and Death). I also have a side project that is definitely influenced by Killing Joke at times and I made sure to get an out of phase guitar tone to give it that sound. The Waves JP37 plugin also definitely helped get me very close to the sound I was looking for! Some friendly ideas from one Producer/guitarist/Killing Joke fan to another! PS. Love the channel! Not that I needed any more microphones (luckily endorsed by Neumann and Blue and own probably about 50 mics?), but I took your word on the Lewitt LCT 140 AIR's and I think I like them more than some of my SDC's that are like 4 times the price!

Nice tutorial, as always, Warren. Thanks. :) I've always tried to work in cool panning 'ear candy', ever since I first heard Peach by Prince, and HAD to have a PN-2 on my first pedal board (there's that cool little instrumental bridge where he used one very conspicuously :)) ... :P ... It is a simple way to add movement/interest. :))

Hi Warren another great video! I have a panning issue that's driving me crazy!! Lets say you have one mono electric guitar basic rock blues rym panned L 50 - 100% This is a guitar mono track intro and a Lead vocal panned dead centered thats comes in after 2 bars Playing back just these two tracks the L. vocal does not sound like it's in the center it appears to sound panned R 10- 30 % I've have listened on Focal monitors, my Focal head phones, sony head phone too , Also I tried flipping the phase , with effects, eq, etc... and with out. The guitar was recorded w/ shure 57 fender amp and vocals audio technica 4033 I also tried recording the guitar just strait instrument hz so any help would be greatly appreciated . Thanks. MacBook pro apollo x6 cubase 10 pro Note I had to pan the L vocal L about 20 % to make it sound centered. Thanks again!

Warren...I have really enjoyed your guidance in showing us youtubers "a path". Your tutorials are professional and easy to understand and your tricks of the trade are cool and inspiring. (I'm finally adding the Wah D-string bass in my electric guitars.) Bring it-sweet midrange! In addition, I am finally understanding the importance of instrument/frequency separation, panning, and adding width/depth in music. Side note; I have been playing guitar/bass with either a 4 or 8 track for decades and have been recording so blindly. Thank you sir and many good wishes!

Thanks so much for the video! I'm a new subscriber and really enjoying it. I have one question: The clicking from the guitar track that you developed, how would you go about eliminating that? Spectral editing? EQ with reverb overtop?

To show soe technicques, this is an OK video. But there always is this point, when a good, simple song suddenly loses it's simplicity and becomes something resemblig everything else coming from production. Simple songs benchmark might be: White Stripes - Icky Thump / Joe Chiccarelli

Killing Joke! Saw them live in 2016! Found them a couple of years ago (way too late) and they have influenced all those bands that I listened to when I was a teen. Like Faith No More, Nirvana, Metallica and other neverheard bands. The three newest albums gave me goosebumps, especially one song - the Great Cull.
