Christmas time is not stressful for me at all. I have very minimal decorations (a Christmas tree for the living room and stockings for the mantel). I only buy for 4 people. We don't go to family get togethers. We just go to church on Christmas day come home, eat and open our gifts. It's very quiet and relaxing. I have decluttered all the drama from my life!

We had the easiest time putting up our tree this year ever. We put it away by labelling each color of tree codes. Put rubber bands around them. Only two strings of lights went on instead of four due to inflation. A few ornaments this year instead of all the special ones and it is ok. We put two landscaping lights in window for conserving electric and walla. Merry Christmas all.

That is my goal! I’ve scaled way back on decorating. We got a live tree from a farm in the mountains. My kids love the adventure of picking their own tree and haven’t gotten to do that in a few years. I’m not going to host any large parties or attend many. We will go on vacation in two weeks for a few days. I’m going to spread out my baking and other cooking instead of trying to do it all the week before Christmas. I’m not cooking a big meal for Christmas although my adult son wants some of “Mom’s” cooking. Lol! So I’m cooking for two of our adult kids this Saturday. All he asked for was ham, mashed potatoes, my creamed corn, and bread. My adult daughter wants banana pudding. All of that is pretty easy. I want to spend the rest of the month with my little ones, 9 and 11, stringing popcorn, making paper chains, baking and decorating cookies, and other fun stuff!

I held onto outgrown snow bibs of all sizes, because one day I had several friends over and we got a big snow, and all their kids got to go out and play in it. I outfitted an entire homeschool playgroup (2 yrs to older teens) for a spontaneous day of sledding and snowmen, and fort-building. It has been probably 10 years since that happened. My kids are now 21 all the way up to 31, and I've held onto the snow gear year after year, just in case. It's a wonderful memory, but I needed to realize those years are behind me, and all the babies are grown. No one is coming. This is the year. It all goes. Thank you.

I did a huge declutter in the garage over the past year so I could park my car in the garage. My older son mentioned wanting to park his car in the garage too and he is willing to start looking at his stuff that is in the way. It is great to start hearing the young adults in my house noticing the difference decluttering is making. Thank you for the inspiration.

We park our cars in the garage too, and I'm always amazed to see folks with garages full of junk. Your car in all likelihood is the second most expensive thing you own (your house being #1, assuming you own it)- so I've always found it odd that folks will protect their junk to the detriment of their cars. But our garage gets pretty rough sometimes too. I can see how it would happen if you didn't have the habit of parking in the garage already.

I do have a win to report: today en route home from the dentist I stopped at Target to get an item. I almost went into Five Below “just to look,” but decided not to. Dawn, I thought of you as I decorated this past weekend. I love a fresh tree and how it smells but this year the prices are sky high and I just didn't want to drop a 100 bucks on a tree that wasn't taller than I am, so, I bought a fresh wreath and hung it over my mantel - same fragrance as a tree for 12 bucks!!! I decorated my china cabinet with my Christmas dishes and put out a few other of my nice pieces of Fitz & Floyd that I collected many years ago. Bought 2 very small poinsettias that I put in my kitchen window for a pop of red - 3 bucks on sale! And I gave away stuff. So easy and yet my house still looks festive. My only child is 29 so it's not like I have little kids that will miss a tree.

We decorated last weekend and my husband was very concerned as he couldn’t find “all the bins” 😂 I decluttered over the past few years and I am pretty much down to the tree, one small bauble storage box and a small bin with our light up gingerbread house. It has been so easy to do the indoors! Just got the outside lights to put up which should take about an hour max!! Thank you so much for reminding me we don’t have to go overboard! I am ready for Christmas- presents bought & wrapped, except for homemade ginger cookies! - and I can enjoy the season!😊

I must admit, I’ve been doing most of the decluttering when the Husband isn’t home. Big difference and he hasn’t even noticed. My house is getting so neat and tidy. Thank you soooo much for these videos. I don’t ask or make my husband watch. I recently had a chance to donate to Ukrainian fugitives and wow, did I let go of a lot of stuff. We’re highly minimised but I went through our entire home and just donated pretty much everything we’re not using. It’s a whole other thing when you know someone’s in real need. For example, like you Dawn, I’ve been hanging on to some things in case we have another baby… but I’d much, much rather have a baby be warm right this moment than hold on to things I’ll be able to pick up when I need it anyway. Also had a couple of boxes of kids’ clothes and toys to sell in our local yearly second hand fair but again, just donated it instead. I would’ve gotten a dollar or so a piece and that’s money for sure, but their need is sooo much bigger than ours. We’re not rich by any means but we do have basic security. These poor people have nothing. It was a wonderful feeling to pack all the things and know that little boys and girls would be warm and happy this winter.

I donated a LOT of seasonal decor this year when I moved, but held onto too much because I wasn’t sure what I would want to use in the new larger apartment. For example, I went from 2 windows to 13, and had been gifted several battery operated “candles” which I thought would look lovely in the windows. However, my building is old and I had to put plastic on the windows, making the sills unusable. I’m not sure yet if I will donate them or use them when the plastic comes off. But I love the idea of decorating, then donating what is left! I’m a widowed senior, so don’t want to go to a lot of trouble to decorate and undecorate. A few simple items make a big difference, and the rest can bless someone else!

The part about spending quality time with our lonely kids really got to me because I find myself lately having "no time" or very little time to play with my 4 year old and every night I go to work and instantly miss her and wish I spent my day focusing more on her rather than cleaning or whatever (today was online shopping for toys for her cousins).

I thought I was going to be RUTHLESS with my Christmas decor this year. To say "if I don't use it, it's GONE! You're outta here!" and get rid of a ton. Then I got in the attic and started handing down the Christmas boxes. Felt like a clown car. 37 totes/bags/boxes ............ Yes I know, WHOA!!!!!! I couldn't believe it myself. But I started decorating and have used almost everything. Keep in mind, that includes the Christmas tree, the 4ft tall Santa, tree ornaments, garland. I have a Christmas Village set, I decorate on top of the kitchen cabinets, and in the basement, and along the staircase, I decorate outside so there's a red truck that's the size of a tote by itself, there's a 4ft rattan snowman, lights, wreaths. But it's a time of year that it doesn't feel like clutter and honestly makes me and my family happy. During a time where it's cold and gets dark before you even get home, I welcome the lights and decorations.

The idea of decluttering is to use what one has, and not have it take precious time, space and resources to manage it. Sounds like you have it down pat, you use everything and enjoy it and it is not problem to manage or store. In this case, enjoy all you have. If and when it no longer brings you joy and happiness, and you dread getting it all out or put away, THEN it is time to seriously think about decluttering. Blessings to you this Christmas season!

An older friend has just moved into assisted living. For all of her adult life she collected fancy Christmas paraphernalia. She enjoyed showing it off to her friends. Her friends patiently oohed and ahhed over her stuff but in reality had no sentimental attachment to her stuff and mostly thought about how much effort it took. Now her kids don’t want any of it and she doesn’t have room to display it. It all has to go. Boxes and boxes of expensive stuff. Sometimes I think we delude ourselves with our Christmas decorating.
@ritadyer3770
@ritadyer3770 Год назад
Yes. And not just for Christmas stuff. It’s everything. Someday the things we collect or love will mean nothing to those left behind. I realized that when my mom passed. She had tons of carousels and angels and other stuff. It was cute but just clutter. I’ve let most of my Christmas stuff go. My kids have way too many decorations for their rooms and that is after we went thru it back in the summer and got rid of lots of their stuff. My 11 year old has a huge nutcracker collection. He won’t part with any of them. Lol!

BUT…she didn’t buy them for OTHER people. She bought them to enjoy herself. Sooooo, if that goal was achieved, what’s wrong with her collecting them? If no friends or children want them, just donate them. Someone else will want and enjoy them! No harm, no foul.
@flynn1a
@flynn1a Год назад
@@happynanna4749 In this case, it seemed that she made the effort for her family and friends; not that she loved having all the things around for her own enjoyment. That’s why I say sometimes we delude ourselves thinking we are making others happy, or impressed, with our decorating. I do think, like Dawn says, it’s activities together that may mean more than decor.

Great tips! I usually do a pantry clean out when the Boy Scouts do their food drive. I don’t give them expired/about to expire food. But, it allows me to get food I ended up not using as much of as I thought I would to people who have use for it. I love keeping my sentimental Christmas items in my regular Christmas storage boxes, but for me it’s mostly just Christmas cards. Almost all of my ornaments have been gifted by friends and family so putting up my tree is always a really special, emotional time of the holiday. I like to take breaks hanging ornaments and look through old cards from my grandparents and others who are no longer here with us.

I love your videos!! Two mind-blowing moments for me were: 1. Reminding me that Compassion neutralizes negative emotions. If I can feel compassion for the unknown person who can truly use and enjoy something I currently have and don't really need, I no longer feel any fear of parting with that thing. 2. I'm going to quote you so anyone reading this can copy and paste as needed: "Our kids are drowning in stuff, and what they're so desperate for is human connection. For uninterrupted time with you." I used to feel bad about giving gifts to children that "forced" their parents to be involved, rather than something the child could just play with on their own to "give the parents a break." I have seen videos where children were asked to choose between a toy and time with their parents, and they chose to have time with their parents. 💔 This year I have a new great-nephew, and I was feeling a bit anxious about one of the books I got him for Christmas. It's how to teach sign language to your child so they can communicate through signs until they're able to master speech. I was concerned that it meant the parents had to be involved and spend time with the child. (BTW, I'm 61 and don't have kids). I have no regrets now! Not only will Emilio and his parents be able to learn simple sign language they can use with each other and any hearing impaired people they meet, but they will be spending much needed time together in the process. Thank you again. ❤

My husband and I downsized last year, moving from a 6 bedroom to a 2 bedroom. We got rid of a lot, keeping what we felt we would need in our new place. Even still, I am losing and misplacing things which wastes time and frustrates. As I pull out our holiday decorations, I am offering them to our grown children and then any extra gets donated. I am also once again going through clothing, bedding, dishes, decor, to freshen up our new space and to hopefully be more manageable. Thank you for always encouraging...

One thing I a started doing about 2 years ago when I found Dawn and began implementing her methods (along with Dana and Cass!) - is taking a black sharpie and writing the expiration dates on the top of cans and other items. It's been so helpful to cut down on food waste!

I have PTSD and had a lot of anxiety around the holidays/decorating. Many years ago I went minimal on my Xmas decorations for my own health. I'm better now, but still keep decorating to a minimum. A lot of folks like me do decluttering/minimalism because it helps to keep their anxiety triggers lower.

Looks great Dawn. I decluttered my Christmas and all Holiday decor over the past year, and now it’s so much more fun for my kids to help. My newly married daughter chose a few items for her new home, and it’s nice to see them there and know I didn’t burden her, she chose them. It is not a dreaded chore to put away holiday decorations anymore either. Thanks!

Hi Dawn, just wanted to thank you!! I decluttered and pared down Christmas decor last year. Yesterday we got things out to decorate and it was quick, easy and fun!! No "leftover decor" to make me feel guilty it only saw the light of day and then got packed away for a future time - so glad I donated it all last year and hope that someone else enjoyed it! May you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season! Hope you are blessed as much as you have blessed all of us!

I appreciate your videos and love your advice. The problem for me is I grew up dirt poor and always hungry. I tend to hold on to stuff for far too long. Also, I have so much food in my house. Like it’s ridiculous. We have so much that every six months I rotate and take out everything that will expire within the year and let my adult kids go through it for their homes. Then I give the rest to my mom or my husbands coworkers. So at least we don’t throw it away I guess.

I feel like you are the donation place. I used to do the same sort of thing. I would collect food, crafty things, kid equipment, whatever. It had to be in good shape. Then when there was a birthday, whallah, gift already there, someone comes for lunch, bango, food. and if friends, family wanted anything, it was there to give. I've had friends run into hard times and so I invite them over to hang and send them home with pantry staples, extra produce in summer, activities for the kids. I was there at one time, completely broke, not knowing if I could afford anything(or find anything if I could afford it) so I collect. I actually find I don't know what to do with myself if I don't have extras around to give away. Lol. I have nicknamed myself 'The Minimalist Hoarder'.

I don't think I ever really have a handle on it truthfully. It HAS been awesome being able to give for sure:) I collect and then I get overwhelmed and drop stuff off at thrift, at the end of my driveway with a free sign, have a yard sale, and then I start collecting again. I never buy full priced stuff, even for myself. I think from being on the low end of money for most of my life, I thought almost everything was frivolous, so ONLY if I found stuff secondhand, super clearance, and I ABSOLUTELY had to have it, I bought it. I still have a hard time giving up 'free' stuff. I can totally relate to too much food in the house, but there again, food can be so expensive so we used to have to drive 2 hours to the city and stock up about once or twice a year. Now gas is atrocious, so I am not going to be in the habit of going to the store much. I eat whatever I have even if I don't like it...some things like that I still can't really get over. Waste in my house is an absolute sin! Lol. I have this very big tug of war in my being that trusts God will take care of me and then going, well he entrusted me with funds, possessions, etc, and maybe I'm not supposed to waste any of it, so use it or give it away as much as I can. Pffftt....I sound like a headcase😅 I truly have everything I need and then some, at this point in my life. I am so grateful every day of my life that God DOES take care of me, and I do feel like if worse comes to worse, and I end up with less than before, God has captured my heart and that is truly all I need.

Dawn, you've really touched my heart with this video. Paul, my better half, is better about going to church than I am. A few years ago, he called me during mass and asked me if we had any extra hats, coats, scarves, etc. A lady had walked to church with no coat... after he picked up what we had, he took her to goodwill. She found two coats that she thought were pretty and he told her to have both. I couldn't have been prouder for his loving nature. Much love from our family to yours!

This video really resonated with me. My niece stopped by and left with two end tables and a number of vintage items. Instead of enjoying the empty space, like everyone else who declutters, I felt scared, anxious and found myself grieving the furniture. Now, that I have had time to work through my feelings, I am starting to enjoy the additional space. I was also overjoyed to find two items that I needed and thought I decluttered, simply because I don't want to buy replacements. My online sales are not going well, but I'm going to stick with it. People might be more motivated to buy used after Christmas.

Totally true for me... we were talking about scaling back alot on gifts for us adults... I was thinking how Christmas always felt like a time I was cared for. My gifts were some wants but also things I needed... clothes, boots, etc. Now I usually can just buy those things when I need them... I don't have to wait for a holiday. So it really rings true why we can scale back on physical gifts for kids. They have so much more access throughout the year than we did growing up and it does seem like the job has switched to being a gate keeper to keep stuff out and ensure they have an environment where they can thrive.

One average size tote holds everything but the tree stand, porcelain nativity set (in its own protective box) and wooden tabletop Christmas carousel. Other than those three items, if it doesn't fit in the tote either it goes or something else goes to make room. No exceptions. Also donated all wrapping paper and only use gift bags with tissue paper. Call me lazy, but it's hassle-free. It has taken me a lifetime to make Christmas the enjoyable holiday it is meant to be instead of a month-long stress-fest.🎄🙌🏼

Also glad you found the red tablecloth. Because of Christmas decluttering I do have less to pull out. I 'Christmased' the apartment on Saturday. I took away all the everyday tabletop ornaments (put them on my bed) and sat with that for a while. I am definitely not a minimalist - I found it too bare for my liking - but in January I will need to figure out what items can go, as it can feel too cluttered. Next I put all the linen items on tables, rails or in drawers. I then put the tabletop items I have. I really do like what I have and treasure them. I have a fake 24" tree that I put together. By then I was beginning to feel fatigue and the overwhelm of decorating. It just took me longer than usual. But it would have taken longer if I didn't declutter. And of course, I still have left-over items to donate - which is great! Oh and my everyday tabletop ornaments get moved into the Christmas boxes and put away. Overall I am happy with how warm my decorating feels to me. Now to put on Christmas music starting Dec 1st and schedule caroling! 🎄🎶

The tablecloth was shown in one of your other videos that you posted after the one where you talked about not being able to find it, so I knew you had already found it, I was just waiting to hear where it had been. I personally don't do any decorating for Christmas, partly because my cricket brain can't tolerate anything different or additional being out (my visual clutter threshold is extremely low), and partly (mainly) because I'm never at home around Christmas anyway (not married and no roommates, so no husband or kids) - I always spend Christmas break at my parents' house. I do have some special ornaments (4 total), but because I don't decorate (there's also zero room for a tree in my small house), they live at my parents' house and go on their tree, so I still get to enjoy them.

From a daycare teacher, in January children grow up a size and snow clothes and boots. Either make sure the snow clothes are loose in November or have one size up in the ready. In January the stores and used stores don’t have these things anymore. Very hard to replace and children suffer.
